Areas affected...Eastern Texas Panhandle
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 129...
Valid 220112Z - 220215Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 129
continues.
SUMMARY...A couple of supercells will exit WW 129 to WW 130 over the
next hour. A break in activity is expected before the possibility
of additional strong to severe thunderstorm development overnight.
DISCUSSION...Two robust supercells are ongoing in Hemphill county in
the far eastern Texas Panhandle. These storms have produced several
reports of large hail and gusty winds over the last hour. The severe
weather threat is expected to continue across the eastern portions
of WW 129 for 1 to 2 more hours before storms exit to the east.
Intensity should be maintained as low-level moisture advection and
shear are expected to strengthen with the onset of the nocturnal
low-level jet. Sufficiently steep mid-level lapse rates of 7
to 7.5 C/km and MLCAPE of 500-1000 J/kg supports large hail and
damaging outflow winds as the primary threats. Additional strong
to severe storms may develop across portions of the Oklahoma and
Texas Panhandles later tonight as upper level lift from the main
shortwave trough shifts east from the southern Rockies.

PM CDT Tue Apr 21 2020
Valid 220100Z - 221200Z
...THERE IS A SLIGHT RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS PARTS OF
THE SOUTHERN PLAINS...
...SUMMARY... Scattered strong to severe thunderstorms with large
hail and possibly a few wind gusts will be possible across parts
of the southern Plains this evening into tonight.
...Southern Plains... A shortwave ridge will move slowly eastward
across the southern Plains this evening and into the Arklatex
tonight. In the wake of the ridge, an upper-level trough will
approach the southern Plains. Thunderstorms are ongoing just to the
west of the ridge in the eastern Texas Panhandle. These storms are
located along the northern edge of a corridor of moderate instability
(MLCAPE 1200 to 2500 J/kg) extending from central Texas northward
into western Oklahoma and the southeastern Texas Panhandle. The
magnitude of instability is confirmed by the 00Z Amarillo sounding
which shows MUCAPE of 1700 J/kg and 0-6 km shear near 80 kt. The
sounding also shows an impressive 0-3 km AGL lapse rate approaching
10 C/km. While lapse rates are not quite as steep to the north,
the storms will still have plenty of instability to produce large
hail. The more dominant supercells could even produce hailstones of
greater than 2 inches in diameter. This threat for very large hail
should continue through late this evening as the initial activity
moves into southern Oklahoma.
Additional severe thunderstorm development, potentially more
widespread, is expected to take place from the northern Texas
Panhandle into western Oklahoma early tonight as low-level
flow ramps up across the southern Plains. This convection
should move east-northeastward as mid-level flow becomes a bit
more southwesterly ahead of the approaching upper-level trough.
Northwestern and north-central Oklahoma could be impacted by the
stronger thunderstorms. A marginal risk of hail should also exist
south-southwestward into west-central Texas where strong instability,
strong deep-layer shear and steep lapse rates are present. Any
potential for hail there will likely remain very isolated due to
capping issues.
