URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST REQUESTED Tornado Watch Number 143
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 650 PM EDT Thu Apr 23 2020
The NWS Storm Prediction Center has issued a
* Tornado Watch for portions of North Florida Far southeast Georgia
Coastal Waters
* Effective this Thursday night from 650 PM until Midnight EDT.
* Primary threats include... A couple tornadoes possible Scattered
damaging wind gusts to 70 mph likely
SUMMARY...A squall line across the eastern Florida Panhandle and
far southwest Georgia should progress east across north Florida
and far southeast Georgia this evening. Damaging winds and brief
tornadoes are the expected hazards.
The tornado watch area is approximately along and 55 statute miles
north and south of a line from 60 miles northwest of Gainesville
FL to 25 miles east southeast of Jacksonville FL. For a complete

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
REMEMBER...A Tornado Watch means conditions are favorable
for tornadoes and severe thunderstorms in and close to the
watch area. Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for
threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements and
possible warnings.

and aloft to 1 inch. Extreme turbulence and surface wind gusts to

The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 143 continues.
SUMMARY...A corridor of relatively higher severe threat will exist
across northern FL for the next hour or so.
DISCUSSION...Recent radar signatures across northern FL show two
more distinct updrafts embedded within the convective line over
Lafayette, Suwannee, and Dixie Counties. Additionally, the remnant
outflow boundary extends from roughly the Gilchrist/Dixie/Lafayette
county intersection eastward-southeastward to about 25 miles south of
SGJ. These more cell-in-line structures coupled with augmented lift
and vorticity along the outflow boundary could result in a corridor
of relatively higher severe potential. Primary threat is damaging
wind gusts but brief tornadoes are also possible. Local southward
expansion of the watch may also be needed to cover potential storm
intensification along the southern end of the line.

...THERE IS A SLIGHT RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS FAR
SOUTHEASTERN GEORGIA AND INTO NORTHERN FLORIDA...
...SUMMARY... Limited severe risk continues across parts of the
Southeast -- particularly over northern Florida -- but will gradually
diminish this evening.
...Discussion... Widespread, prior and ongoing convection has
largely stabilized the airmass across much of the Southeast,
with most of the convection now sub-severe. One exception is
across the northern Florida/far southeastern Georgia vicinity,
where a well-organized band of storms continues moving eastward.
In this area -- i.e. within Tornado Watch 143 -- risk for damaging
winds and a tornado or two will continue over the next few hours.
Otherwise, marginal severe risk remains farther to the west, near
and ahead of the advancing cold front that currently stretches
from Middle Tennessee south-southwestward to southeast Louisiana.
Though a few stronger storms -- possibly capable becoming
locally severe -- remain possible early this evening, overall
risk will gradually diminish, as the downstream airmass -- across
eastern Alabama/the Florida Panhandle and into Georgia -- remains
convectively overturned/stabilized.
