Significant mid-level drying has spread across much of the southern
Middle-Atlantic and Carolinas in the wake of early-day short-wave
trough. While the majority of deep convection has now spread well
off the Atlantic Coast ahead of large-scale forcing for ascent,
a few strong thunderstorms linger over NC. This activity has
developed within a steep low-level lapse rate environment where
surface temperatures warmed rapidly beneath the cool trough. Gusty
winds and perhaps some small hail may accompany this activity for
the next hour or so, but with further diurnal cooling these storms
should weaken.
Upstream across the Plains, no appreciable changes were made to
thunder probabilities. Early-evening water-vapor imagery exhibits
a notable short-wave trough over southern WY/CO and this feature is
digging east-southeast toward the central Plains. Convective threat
remains highest ahead of this short wave into the pre-dawn hours.
