SPC 0100Z Day 1 Outlook
Day 1 Convective Outlook NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0759
PM CDT Fri May 01 2020
Valid 020100Z - 021200Z
...THERE IS A MARGINAL RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS FOR PORTIONS
OF THE CENTRAL HIGH PLAINS AND TEXAS PANHANDLE...
...SUMMARY... A couple of thunderstorms, capable of producing an
isolated strong to severe wind gust or two, remain possible this
evening mainly across the central High Plains and northern Texas
Panhandle.
...Synopsis... Glancing ascent, with a passing mid-level
impulse traversing a larger scale ridge aloft, will continue
to support high-based convection across portions of the central
High Plains. Here, a deeply mixed boundary layer and associated
steep low to mid-level lapse rates will support isolated damaging
gusts for a couple more hours, until nocturnal boundary layer
cooling and decoupling diminish any remaining severe convective
potential. Likewise, lingering convection along the dryline will
continue to gradually weaken with nocturnal cooling. The greatest
chance for a storm producing a damaging gust would be across the
northern Texas Panhandle over the next couple of hours, where a
recent flare up in convection with a couple of flashes have been
noted, hence the maintenance of the marginal across this area.
Elsewhere across the CONUS, thunder was removed from portions of
the Mid-Atlantic into New England. A mid-level trough and associated
surface low continue to track eastward into the Atlantic, away from
land, with deep-layer lift and buoyancy across the region diminishing
with time. Thunder was also removed from the Upper-Mississippi
Valley, as nocturnal boundary-layer cooling will only reinforce
700-600 mb convective inhibition, making parcels more unlikely to
accelerate through the -20 to -30 C layer (over 500 mb) to support
an adequate density of flashes to warrant a thunder line (10% or
greater coverage). Nonetheless, a brief pulse of convection with
a flash or two cannot be completely ruled out this evening.
