 SPC 0100Z Day 1 Outlook
Day 1 Convective Outlook NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0740
PM CDT Tue May 12 2020
Valid 130100Z - 131200Z
...THERE IS A MARGINAL RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS PARTS
OF SOUTH-CENTRAL TEXAS AND NORTHEAST WYOMING...
...SUMMARY... Thunderstorms associated with marginally severe wind
gusts and hail will be possible across parts of south-central Texas
and northeast Wyoming this evening.
...South-central Texas... The latest water vapor imagery shows
an upper-level trough across the southern Plains with a convective
cluster located just ahead of the trough in the middle Texas Coastal
Plains. The convective cluster is located along and behind an
outflow boundary. A moist airmass is present ahead of the boundary
with surface dewpoints near 70 F. Moderate instability is analyzed
by the RAP just to the south of the outflow boundary with MLCAPE in
the 1500 to 2000 J/kg range. This combined with 0-6 km shear near 40
kt evident on the central Texas WSR-88D VWP should be sufficient for
an isolated severe threat for another hour or two. A few marginally
severe wind gusts and hail will be possible with the stronger cores
along the south side of the convective cluster.
...Northeast Wyoming... The latest water vapor imagery shows
west to southwest mid-level flow across the northern Rockies and
northern High Plains. A subtle shortwave trough is located in
southeast Montanan and northern Wyoming. Ahead of the trough, a
corridor of maximized low-level moisture is present across eastern
Wyoming. Scattered thunderstorms are ongoing along the eastern edge
of this corridor near and to the east of Gillette, Wyoming. The
WSR-88D VWP at Rapid City, South Dakota shows strong deep-layer
shear with substantial speed shear, mostly in the mid-levels. This
combined with steep lapse rates may be enough for an isolated hail
threat for a few more hours this evening. Marginally severe wind
gusts could also occur.

The duck hunter trained his retriever to walk on water. Eager to show off this
amazing accomplishment, he asked a friend to go along on his next hunting trip.
Saying nothing, he fired his first shot and, as the duck fell, the dog walked
on the surface of the water, retrieved the duck and returned it to his master.
"Notice anything?" the owner asked eagerly. "Yes," said his friend,
"I see that fool dog of yours can't swim."
