Day 4-8 Outlook
Day 4-8 Convective Outlook NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0241 AM CDT Fri Oct 02 2020
Valid 051200Z - 101200Z
...DISCUSSION... Large-scale mid-level ridging appears likely
to persist within the westerlies across the northern mid-latitude
eastern Pacific into western North America through the middle of
next week, with broad downstream troughing east of the Rockies
into the western Atlantic. Toward the middle of next week, there
could be some re-amplification of the ridging along an axis near the
Canadian/U.S. Rockies, ahead of a large developing mid-level trough
approaching the Pacific Coast. As this occurs, the large-scale
downstream troughing may amplify along a negatively tilted axis
from Hudson Bay into western Atlantic.
While embedded short wave developments remain much more uncertain,
this regime appears likely to maintain a west-northwesterly
to northwesterly mid-level flow across much of the nation.
The development of a southerly return flow of moisture off the Gulf
of Mexico appears unlikely, maintaining generally dry and/or stable
conditions with low convective potential.
SPC Day 2 Fire Weather Outlook
Day 2 Fire Weather Outlook NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0214 AM CDT Fri Oct 02 2020
Valid 031200Z - 041200Z
...Synopsis... A mid-level trough will slowly propagate across
the eastern half of the CONUS, with a ridge aloft remaining in
place across the western U.S. on Day 2/Saturday. Surface high
pressure and a resultant pressure gradient across California will
gradually diffuse through the day, but with modestly dry and breezy
offshore conditions still possible early. Farther east across the
southern High Plains, dry and breezy conditions may accompany a
southward-surging cold front during the afternoon.
...Southern California Transverse Ranges... 15-25 mph sustained
offshore surface flow along with 15-25% RH are expected through
at least mid morning across the higher terrain of the southern
California Transverse ranges, with an Elevated highlight included
to address this scenario. However, the latest guidance suggests
that these conditions should begin to subside by noon and continue
to weaken further through the rest of the period.
...Southern High Plains... Along and behind the cold front, at least
15-20 mph sustained northerly winds are expected, with RH dropping
to 20% in a few spots across portions of central/eastern New Mexico
into the Texas Panhandle. Model agreement on widespread RH under
20% is not particularly high, precluding an Elevated delineation
at this time. However, drier trends in model guidance may warrant
an Elevated area in future outlooks.
