...SUMMARY... A few lightning flashes may occur over New England,
and across portions of the Pacific Northwest later tonight.
...New England...
Strong low-level warm advection will be noted across New England
today ahead of a strong upper trough that will eject into eastern
NY by the end of the period. While modified low-level moisture
will advance inland ahead of the cold front, forecast soundings
suggest parcel buoyancy will be rooted above the boundary layer and
only weak elevated convection is expected ahead of the front. The
strongest updrafts may yield a few lightning flashes.
...Pacific Northwest...
Height falls are expected to spread across the Pacific Northwest
later today as a short-wave trough moves onshore during the latter
half of the period. As heights fall, cooling mid-level profiles
and steepening lapse rates should support scattered convection
immediately ahead of a cold front that should move onshore toward
the end of the period.

...SUMMARY... Thunderstorms are not expected in the continental
United States on Saturday or Saturday night.
...DISCUSSION... A shortwave trough will move eastward across the
Gulf Coast States on Saturday as an upper-level ridge moves into
the Great Plains. Another shortwave trough will move into the
Intermountain West. At the surface, a large area of high pressure
will be present across the southeastern U.S. This will prevent
moisture return and keep a dry airmass in place across much of the
nation. For this reason, thunderstorm development is not forecast
across the continental United States on Saturday and Saturday night.

...SUMMARY... Isolated non-severe thunderstorms will be possible
on Sunday across far southeast Florida and along the coast of
California.
...DISCUSSION... A weak upper-level trough is forecast to move
eastward across the southeastern Gulf of Mexico on Sunday. Ahead of
the trough, a moist airmass will be in place across far southeast
Florida. As surface temperatures warm during the day, isolated
thunderstorm development will be possible in the vicinity of Miami. A
few thunderstorms could also occur ahead of an upper-level trough
moving toward the coast of California. The greatest chance for
lightning is from near Eureka southward to near San Jose. Weak
instability is expected to keep thunderstorms at non-severe levels
across the continental United States on Sunday.

...Synopsis... Large-scale upper-level ridging across the central
U.S. will be flanked by an amplified trough to the east and smaller
shortwave trough moving into the Northwest. A weak lee trough will
deepen in the central High Plains. Dry downslope flow will lead
to potential elevated fire weather in some areas of the combined
Panhandles and northeast New Mexico. Duration and spatial extent
of 15+ mph winds will likely be limited, though 10-20% RH does
seem probable.

...Synopsis... Upper-level ridging within the central U.S. will
flatten on Saturday. Flow at mid levels across the central and
southern High Plains will increase during the period. A stronger
lee trough in the High Plains will develop during the day. Surface
winds of 15-20 mph will broadly occur in the southern Plains with
a few locations seeing periods of 20+ mph winds. RH is expected to
fall to 10-25%. The primary question will be how low RH will fall
towards the I-35 corridor. However, with surface trajectories out
of a southeastern surface high, modification by Gulf moisture is
expected to be limited and favor the drier model solutions. Moderate
850 mb winds will further support enhanced surface winds/gusts
during the afternoon across the region. Elevated fire weather is
expected with a few locations seeing near critical conditions.
