 SPC 0100Z Day 1 Outlook
Day 1 Convective Outlook NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0659
PM CST Thu Feb 25 2021
Valid 260100Z - 261200Z
...THERE IS A MARGINAL RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS PARTS
OF THE SOUTHERN PLAINS...ARKLATEX AND LOWER MISSISSIPPI VALLEY...
...SUMMARY... A few storms capable of producing large hail and
isolated strong wind gusts will be possible this evening across north
Texas, and then spread eastward to the Ark-La-Miss through tonight.
...Southern Plains/Ark-La-Miss... A shortwave trough, evident
on water vapor imagery in the southern Rockies, will move quickly
eastward into the southern High Plains this evening. Ahead of the
trough, a moist airmass will remain in place across parts of east
Texas, Louisiana and the south-central Mississippi. As the trough
approaches this evening, a 40 to 50 kt low-level jet is forecast
to develop across the eastern half of Texas. In response, moisture
in northeast Texas will increase in the low to mid-levels but
remain somewhat stable in the boundary layer. Due to the moisture
advection, RAP Forecast soundings in north-central and northeast
Texas increase MUCAPE into the 500 to 1000 J/kg range. Although cell
development should remain somewhat isolated across the Arklatex early
this evening, storm coverage will increase as the shortwave trough
approaches. The HRRR first develops a cluster of storms in northeast
Texas along a band of large-scale ascent. This convection is forecast
to move eastward across southern Arkansas, northern Louisiana and
into west-central Mississippi later this evening. Effective shear
along this corridor is forecast to be in the 55 to 70 kt range,
suggesting hail will be possible with the stronger elevated storms. A
marginal wind damage threat could also develop from far northeast
Texas eastward into west-central Mississippi, where cells will have
the possibility of becoming closer to surface-based.
