OF THE SOUTHERN PLAINS TONIGHT...
...SUMMARY... A few strong to severe thunderstorms with large hail
the main threat are possible later tonight from the eastern Texas
Panhandle through northern Oklahoma and southern Kansas.

As of early evening a stalled front extends from northern AR through
southern OK and into the High Plains of west TX near Lubbock. The
00Z RAOB data from OKC and SGF show weak instability, but 7-7.5
C/km mid-level lapse rates. A strengthening southerly nocturnal
low-level jet will contribute to positive theta-e advection and
resulting destabilization just above the surface layer across west
TX, OK and southern KS with MUCAPE increasing to 500-800 J/kg. WV
imagery indicates an increase in mid-high level clouds across NM,
possibly due to deeper forcing for ascent accompanying a minor
impulse embedded within a broad fetch of southwesterly winds
aloft. This feature along with increasing isentropic ascent
north of the stalled front associated with the strengthening
low-level jet could contribute to development of thunderstorms
later tonight. If storms can initiate in the expected stronger
thermodynamic environment across west TX into western OK, strong
effective bulk shear, modest instability and up to 7.5 C/km mid-level
lapse rates will support some threat for elevated rotating updrafts
capable of a few instances of large hail.
