The NWS Storm Prediction Center has issued a
* Severe Thunderstorm Watch for portions of
Western and central Kansas
* Effective this Saturday night and Sunday morning from 655 PM
until 100 AM CDT.
* Primary threats include...
Scattered large hail and isolated very large hail events to 2
inches in diameter possible
Isolated damaging wind gusts to 70 mph possible
A tornado or two possible
SUMMARY...Several cells should develop in a largely
west/east-oriented band this evening before consolidating into
multiple slow-moving clusters. Large hail will be the primary threat
with initial development.
The severe thunderstorm watch area is approximately along and 65
statute miles north and south of a line from 65 miles west northwest
of Garden City KS to 20 miles east southeast of Hutchinson KS. For a

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
REMEMBER...A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are
favorable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area.
Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening
weather conditions and listen for later statements and possible
warnings. Severe thunderstorms can and occasionally do produce
tornadoes.

The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 176
continues.
SUMMARY...Storms will continue to pose a threat for isolated large
hail and locally strong wind gusts over western through central and
southern KS through 05Z followed by a gradual weakening trend.
DISCUSSION...Widely scattered to scattered storms continue
developing within an evolving warm advection regime. Latest VWP data
show the low-level jet has strengthened to 40 kt, and this should
support additional storms the next couple of hours. The atmosphere
is moderately unstable with 1500 J/kg MUCAPE. However, winds aloft
are relatively weak indicating storms will remain primarily
multicell in character, and also suggests the large hail threat with
any given updraft will be brief. A few instances of locally strong
wind gusts are also possible within the stronger cores.

THE CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN PLAINS...
...SUMMARY...
Scattered strong to severe thunderstorms will continue across the
central/southern High Plains this evening. Hail and wind are the
primary hazards.
...Central/Southern Plains...
Strong boundary-layer heating once again was the primary instigator
in convective initiation across the central/southern High Plains
this afternoon. An elongated corridor of strong/severe convection
has evolved from southeast CO-western OK Panhandle-along the TX/NM
border into northern Mexico southwest of DRT. Modest steering
currents between I-40 and I-20 will result in slow eastward
propagation this evening. Somewhat stronger flow could allow for
upscale growth with activity near Sanderson/Del Rio. Ultimately, an
MCS could mature and propagate along the Rio Grande into south TX
later tonight. Otherwise, low-level warm advection across KS should
encourage significant convection during the overnight hours. In both
cases, hail/wind are the primary threats.
...Elsewhere...
A few strong storms will linger this evening across the upper MS
Valley and over northeast NV. In both cases, onset of diurnal
cooling should result in weakening convection.
