MD 0719 CONCERNING SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 199... FOR CENTRAL NEBRASKA...NORTHWEST KANSAS
Mesoscale Discussion 0719
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0956 PM CDT Sun May 23 2021
Areas affected...Central Nebraska...northwest Kansas
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 199...
Valid 240256Z - 240500Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 199
continues.
SUMMARY...Locally strong wind gusts are possible in portions of
central Nebraska. A relatively greater threat for strong/severe wind
gusts will be in northwest Kansas and far southwest Nebraska where
instability remains slightly higher.
DISCUSSION...The line of thunderstorms has weakened in north-central
Nebraska where more limited buoyancy and increasing inhibition
exist. Strong cold-pool driven gusts will remain possible for
perhaps an hour or two more. Farther south into northwest Kansas,
greater instability is evident on objective mesoanalysis. A
relatively greater threat for strong/severe wind gusts will exist
across this region. Given storm mode, marginally severe hail will be
quite isolated if it occurs. The overall trend, though, will be for
storms to continue to decrease in intensity over the next few hours
as inhibition continues to increase to the east.

Day 1 Convective Outlook
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0748 PM CDT Sun May 23 2021
Valid 240100Z - 241200Z
...THERE IS AN ENHANCED RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS FROM WESTERN
NEBRASKA THROUGH WESTERN SOUTH DAKOTA...
...SUMMARY...
Scattered thunderstorms capable of damaging wind, large hail, and a
couple of tornadoes will persist mainly over portions of the central
through northern Plains this evening.
...Central through northern Plains...
A line of storms with a few embedded bowing segments and supercells
extends from southwest ND through western SD into western NE. The
downstream warm sector remains moderately unstable with a corridor
of 1000-1500 J/kg MLCAPE as sampled by the 00Z North Platte RAOB. A
mid-level jet pivoting through the base of an ejecting shortwave
trough will maintain favorable vertical wind profiles for organized
storms this evening with 40-50 kt effective bulk shear. While
convective inhibition will undergo some increase as the boundary
layer begins to cool, a strengthening southerly low-level jet should
help sustain a forward propagating line of storms before activity
begins to weaken toward late evening. Damaging wind and large hail
are the primary threats, but a couple of tornadoes remain possible,
mainly through about 03Z before the surface layer begins to
decouple.
