MD 0876 CONCERNING SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 245... FOR PORTIONS OF THE TEXAS PANHANDLE INTO NORTHWEST TEXAS
Mesoscale Discussion 0876
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
1028 PM CDT Mon Jun 07 2021
Areas affected...Portions of the Texas Panhandle into Northwest
Texas
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 245...
Valid 080328Z - 080500Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 245
continues.
SUMMARY...A severe weather threat will persist into the overnight
hours ahead of a cluster of storms currently in the Texas Panhandle.
DISCUSSION...A cluster of storms currently located between Amarillo
and Lubbock is slowly drifting southeast toward increasing low-level
moisture and instability with MUCAPE around 5000 J/kg. Mid-level
westerly flow is around 25 kts, but with southeasterly surface
winds, this translates to 30 to 35 knots of effective shear. This
may help maintain storm organization as the cluster shifts
southeastward. There is considerable uncertainty regarding the
longevity of this cluster. Earlier HRRR runs showed an MCS
continuing to central Texas during the overnight hours with recent
runs struggling to assimilate the current convective activity. In
addition, the thermodynamic environment is quite favorable for
downstream maintenance with marginally favorable shear, but recent
storm trends have shown a large outflow boundary emanate from this
activity and with weak mid-level flow and slow storm motions, storm
activity may struggle on the downshear portion of this boundary
despite an otherwise favorable environment.

Day 1 Convective Outlook
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0744 PM CDT Mon Jun 07 2021
Valid 080100Z - 081200Z
...THERE IS A SLIGHT RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS PARTS OF
THE NORTHERN PLAINS AND NORTHERN MN...
...SUMMARY...
Severe storms are expected across portions of the Dakotas into
northwest Minnesota this evening into tonight.
...Lower MS Valley...
A strong storm or two may continue producing gusty winds for another
hour or so. Overall the severe threat is rapidly diminishing with
loss of daytime heating, amid a weak shear and poor lapse rate
environment. As a result, severe probabilities have been removed.
For more information on the short term severe risk, reference MCD
874.
...Central/Southern High Plains into northwest TX...
Thunderstorms capable of gusty winds and hail and perhaps a
landspout tornado will continue for another couple of hours across
parts of the central high Plains. There is some potential that a
cluster of storms over the western TX Panhandle could still
intensify this evening. Some CAMs guidance, similar to yesterday,
indicate some upward development into a forward propagating
cluster/bow tracking east/southeast across northwest Texas during
the nighttime hours. However, this scenario remains highly uncertain
and will maintain the Marginal risk. For more information on the
short term severe potential, reference MCD 873.
...Northern Plains/MN...
Strong to severe storms are ongoing across far north-central SD into
southeast ND. This activity will be capable of damaging gusts and
hail and persist into the nighttime hours. No changes have been made
to this portion of the outlook with the 01z update.
