WW 250 SEVERE TSTM MT 100040Z - 100600Z
URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST REQUESTED
Severe Thunderstorm Watch Number 250
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
640 PM MDT Wed Jun 9 2021
The NWS Storm Prediction Center has issued a
* Severe Thunderstorm Watch for portions of
central Montana
* Effective this Wednesday night from 640 PM until Midnight MDT.
* Primary threats include...
Isolated very large hail events to 2 inches in diameter possible
Isolated damaging wind gusts to 70 mph possible
A tornado or two possible
SUMMARY...Isolated storms including supercells will pose a risk for
mainly large to very large hail and downburst winds this evening. A
brief tornado or two also cannot be ruled out.
The severe thunderstorm watch area is approximately along and 75
statute miles east and west of a line from 50 miles northeast of
Havre MT to 20 miles southwest of Lewistown MT. For a complete
depiction of the watch see the associated watch outline update
(WOUS64 KWNS WOU0).
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
REMEMBER...A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are
favorable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area.
Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening
weather conditions and listen for later statements and possible
warnings. Severe thunderstorms can and occasionally do produce
tornadoes.
&&
AVIATION...A few severe thunderstorms with hail surface and aloft to
2 inches. Extreme turbulence and surface wind gusts to 60 knots. A
few cumulonimbi with maximum tops to 500. Mean storm motion vector
24035.

MD 0904 CONCERNING SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 250... FOR NORTH-CENTRAL MT
Mesoscale Discussion 0904
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0934 PM CDT Wed Jun 09 2021
Areas affected...North-central MT
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 250...
Valid 100234Z - 100400Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 250
continues.
SUMMARY...The threat for isolated large hail and damaging wind may
continue into the late evening. Some threat may spread downstream of
WW 250 in the short term.
DISCUSSION...At 0230Z, a long-lived supercell is ongoing across
Phillips County MT, where it earlier produced 3-inch diameter hail.
Trends in visible satellite and objective mesoanalysis suggest that
MLCINH is increasing downstream, so the longevity of this cell is
uncertain. However, given the well-organized nature of the storm and
still-favorable MUCAPE and effective shear, some threat may spread
downstream of WW 250 into Valley County, MT in the short term.
Further west, convection has occasionally pulsed up to near severe
limits, though individual cells have struggled to remain organized.
While MLCINH may be too prohibitive for surface-based storms in that
area, persistent large-scale ascent and favorable instability may
allow for occasionally organized clusters or perhaps an elevated
supercell, with a continued threat for hail and perhaps an isolated
strong wind gust.

Day 1 Convective Outlook
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0744 PM CDT Wed Jun 09 2021
Valid 100100Z - 101200Z
...THERE IS A SLIGHT RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS PARTS OF
WESTERN AND NORTHERN MONTANA...
...SUMMARY...
Isolated severe thunderstorms are expected across portions of
western and northern Montana tonight.
...MT...
Extensive low clouds, aided in part by weak upslope flow, have held
surface temperatures down across parts of the northern High Plains
in the Great Falls vicinity. However, intense boundary-layer heating
across eastern ID/WY has allowed deeply mixed boundary layer to
spread across southern MT. Latest satellite imagery suggests
festering cu field/deeper thermals over the Little Belts should lead
to isolated thunderstorms that will then spread northeast into a
region of higher moisture/buoyancy. Otherwise, scattered convection
that is evolving from near MSO to west of CTB should strengthen some
as it propagates east of the higher terrain. At this time it appears
the corridor of most interest is from just west of LWT to east of
HVR where instability and steep lapse rates appear more supportive
of organized severe.
...Elsewhere...
Strong diurnal heating proved instrumental in robust convection this
afternoon across parts of the middle Atlantic, northern MN, and
along the dryline in west Texas. A few storms linger in each of
these regions but boundary-layer cooling should contribute to
further stabilization, in addition to observed convective
overturning, such that additional severe will be very localized this
evening.
