Day 1 Convective Outlook

Valid 091300Z - 101200Z
...THERE IS AN ENHANCED RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS LATE THIS
AFTERNOON AND EVENING OVER PARTS OF SOUTHERN IOWA...NORTHEAST
MISSOURI...AND WEST-CENTRAL ILLINOIS....
...SUMMARY...
Thunderstorms, some with potentially significant severe weather, are
expected this afternoon into tonight across parts of the lower
Missouri Valley westward into the parts of the north-central High
Plains.
...Southeast New England this morning...
Tropical Storm Elsa is currently over water just south of Long
Island, moving northeastward toward the Cape Cod vicinity.Bands of
convection in the northeast quadrant of the storm continue to
exhibit transient low-level rotation in a strong sheared but weakly
unstable environment.A brief tornado or two are possible through
the morning hours as the activity moves across parts of eastern Long
Island, RI, and eastern MA.
...Eastern States This Afternoon...
Water vapor loop shows a shortwave trough over WI, with an
associated cold front extending from western NY/PA into western
NC/northern GA by this afternoon.Dewpoints in the 60s to lower 70s
ahead of the front, combined with pockets of daytime heating and
modest midlevel cooling will help to destabilize the airmass, and
lead to scattered afternoon storms along the front.Flow aloft will
slowly strengthen today, helping to organize a few of the storms
into multicell clusters posing a risk of locally damaging wind gusts
from eastern NY/PA southward across the Carolinas and north GA.It
appears at this time that severe storms will be isolated in nature.
...IA/MO/IL...
Radar and satellite loops show a persistent area of showers and
thunderstorms moving across central/southern IA this morning.
Isolated storms in this area may pose a marginal hail threat for a
few hours before dissipating. In the wake of the morning activity,
strong daytime heating will commence, helping to destabilize the
airmass along and south of a developing warm front over IA.This
should be the location of scattered mid-late afternoon thunderstorm
development.Initial storms will be supercellular with a risk of
very large hail, damaging winds, and isolated tornadoes.Storms
will spread southeastward into parts of MO and western IL through
the evening with an increasing risk of widespread damaging winds.
...WY/NE...
An axis of moderate CAPE will develop this afternoon from eastern WY
into much of NE.Afternoon thunderstorms are expected to initiate
over the foothills of southwest WY and northeast CO.These storms
are expected to become supercellular as they move eastward into the
CAPE axis, with a risk of very large hail and damaging winds.
Activity may persist for much of the evening, tracking southeastward
across western and central NE into northern KS.
