Day 1 Convective Outlook
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0745 PM CDT Tue Jul 13 2021
Valid 140100Z - 141200Z
...THERE IS A SLIGHT RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS FROM NORTHEAST
WYOMING TO NORTHERN NEBRASKA AND ACROSS PARTS OF THE NORTHEASTERN
US....
...SUMMARY...
Severe wind and hail remain possible with thunderstorms across
northeast Wyoming along a corridor into northern Nebraska. Locally
damaging wind gusts will also be noted across portions of the
northeastern US. A few severe wind gusts may also be noted over the
southwest.
...Black Hills Region...
Early-evening water-vapor imagery depicts a short-wave trough over
central MT, extending into extreme northwest WY. This feature is
digging southeast and significant mid-level height falls should
overspread the northern High Plains during the overnight hours. 00z
soundings from RIW and UNR sample the immediate downstream portion
of this trough with ample deep-layer flow/shear for sustaining
organized convection; however, thermodynamic environment is not
particularly impressive with 200-500 J/kg MLCAPE. Even so, scattered
strong thunderstorms are now shifting across southeast MT while
other strong storms are spreading toward the northern Laramie range
over central WY. Given the seasonally poor instability field, will
lower severe probabilities. Large-scale support still suggests a
corridor of strong/severe convection will spread across the Black
Hills region toward northern Nebraska later tonight.
...Northeastern US...
Multi-faceted mid-level disturbances are lifting northeast across
the northern Middle Atlantic/lower Great Lakes region. Water-vapor
imagery suggests one significant disturbance is ejecting across the
Delmarva into eastern PA while another feature is spreading across
southern ON/LE. Primary corridor of convection should continue to
propagate east ahead of these disturbances, concentrating from
upstate NY into central PA. In the wake of the Delmarva feature will
lower severe probabilities.
...Southwest...
00z soundings from VEF/PHX/TUS all exhibit a very deep boundary
layer with seasonally high PWs. Scattered convection will spread
southeast across southern NV/southwest UT this evening with some
threat for gusty winds. More isolated activity should linger farther
south across central/southern AZ.
