The NWS Storm Prediction Center has issued a
* Tornado Watch for portions of
Extreme north-central North Carolina
Western and central Virginia
* Effective this Tuesday night and Wednesday morning from 735 PM
until 300 AM EDT.
* Primary threats include...
A couple tornadoes possible
Isolated damaging wind gusts to 70 mph possible
SUMMARY...One supercell formed and quickly became tornadic in the
Blacksburg area in the past hour, and overall tornado potential
should increase through the evening.The threat should spread
northeastward over the watch area, as additional thunderstorms
develop in a favorably unstable air mass and interact with a
warm-frontal zone, where low-level shear is maximized.
The tornado watch area is approximately along and 40 statute miles
either side of a line from 30 miles southwest of Roanoke VA to 40
miles east northeast of Charlottesville VA. For a complete depiction

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
REMEMBER...A Tornado Watch means conditions are favorable for
tornadoes and severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch
area. Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for
threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements
and possible warnings.

AVIATION...Tornadoes and a few severe thunderstorms with hail
surface and aloft to 0 inches. Extreme turbulence and surface wind
gusts to 60 knots. A few cumulonimbi with maximum tops to 500. Mean
storm motion vector 23025.

The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 480 continues.
SUMMARY...A threat for brief tornadoes continues across Tornado
Watch 480.
DISCUSSION...Several cells near Rockbridge to Albemarle counties in
western/central VA have intensified over the past hour or so. These
cells continue to exhibit periods of weak low-level rotation as they
shift north/northeast. This activity is occurring in the vicinity of
a surface boundary draped across the region and within a corridor of
stronger low-level instability (0-3 km MLCAPE around 100-125 m2/s2).
Low-level shear is somewhat less favorable with northeast extent
compared to earlier this evening, but still sufficient to support
rotating cells capable of brief tornadoes.

THE MIDDLE ATLANTIC...
...SUMMARY...
A tornado or two and isolated strong/gusty winds remain possible
tonight in association with the remnants of tropical cyclone Ida,
extending into the middle Atlantic.
...Remnants of Ida to the middle Atlantic...
Remnants of Ida have lifted into southeastern TN this evening.
Associated surface low is forecast to track into southern WV by
sunrise which should serve to sharpen the boundary currently draped
across the Delmarva into western VA. Well ahead of Ida, a small
cluster of supercells has developed over southwestern VA along the
aforementioned boundary. Tornado potential appears to be increasing
along the frontal corridor, per recent radar trends, and have
adjusted severe probabilities across western VA to account for this
development. Otherwise, severe threat may gradually increase
downstream later this evening as mid-level short-wave trough opens
and ejects northeast across the southern Appalachians.
Several weak circulations continue with stronger updrafts that trail
south of Ida across GA into southeast AL. Loss of boundary-layer
heating should lead to some weakening with this activity, but will
maintain at least low severe probabilities to account for gusty
winds, or perhaps a brief tornado.
