SPC 1200Z Day 1 Outlook
Day 1 Convective Outlook NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 1115
PM CST Sat Jan 05 2019
Valid 061200Z - 071200Z
...NO SEVERE THUNDERSTORM AREAS FORECAST...
...SUMMARY... Some lightning is possible with showers west of the
Cascades today, but the risk for thunderstorms appears otherwise
negligible across much of the U.S. through early Monday.
...Synopsis... Within a belt of westerlies emanating from the
mid-latitude Pacific, larger-scale troughing, with several embedded
perturbations, appears likely to develop inland across the Great
Basin, Rockies and much of the northern and central U.S. Plains
during this period. Models indicate that this will be accompanied
by significant surface cyclogenesis, primarily from the lee of the
Canadian Rockies into the Canadian Prairies, but a secondary low
may form across the central high Plains by late this afternoon,
before migrating northeastward through the middle Missouri Valley.
Trailing this latter feature, a weak cold front is expected to
advance east of the Rockies through portions of the central and
southern Plains by 12Z Monday.
In the wake of a stalling/weakening surface frontal zone across
the Bahamas and Caribbean, boundary layer modification over the
Gulf of Mexico may proceed, but this appears likely to support
only rather modest to weak pre-frontal low-level moisture return
inland of the northwestern Gulf coast. It does appear that there
may be a substantive influx of higher level moisture emanating
from the subtropical eastern Pacific, in association with a strong
mid/upper jet streak (including 90-100+ kt at 500 mb) forecast to
nose across the southern Rockies through the lower Missouri Valley
by late tonight. However, this is unlikely to be accompanied by
destabilization supportive of thunderstorm activity.
Generally stable conditions most other areas will also a preclude
an appreciable risk for thunderstorms today, with the possible
exception of the Pacific Northwest, to the west of the Cascades,
where cold mid-level temperatures may linger in the presence of
cyclonic flow, to the north of mid/upper ridging building into the
remainder of the Pacific coast.

...NO THUNDERSTORM AREAS FORECAST...
...SUMMARY... No thunderstorms are expected across the continental
United States on Monday and Monday night.
...DISCUSSIONS... An upper-level ridge will move from the southern
Appalachians to the Eastern Seaboard on Monday as an upper-level
trough moves eastward into the Mississippi Valley. At the surface
on Monday, southerly flow is forecast from the southern Plains into
the Southeast. In spite of this, moisture return will be confined
to the Texas Coastal Plain where large-scale ascent should be
inadequate for thunderstorm development. Elsewhere across the CONUS,
thunderstorms are not expected Monday and Monday night.
...MAXIMUM RISK BY HAZARD... Tornado: <2% - None Wind: <5%
- None Hail: <5% - None

The geographical center of Boston is in Roxbury. Due north of the center
we find the South End. This is not to be confused with South Boston which
lies directly east from the South End. North of the South End is East Boston
and southwest of East Boston is the North End.
