SPC MD 100 MD 0100 CONCERNING HEAVY SNOW FOR PORTIONS
        OF EASTERN CONNECTICUT...EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS...RHODE
        ISLAND...EASTERN NEW HAMPSHIRE...MUCH OF MAINE
Mesoscale Discussion 0100 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0448 PM CST Sat Jan 29 2022

Areas affected...portions of eastern Connecticut...eastern
Massachusetts...Rhode Island...eastern New Hampshire...much of Maine

Concerning...Heavy snow

Valid 292248Z - 300445Z

SUMMARY...Heavy snow, with up to 1-2 inch/hour snowfall rates and
occasional blizzard conditions are expected to continue into the
early evening hours, before gradually waning as the surface low
drifts away from New England.

DISCUSSION...MRMS mosaic radar continues to show widespread
moderate to heavy snow ongoing across much of northern/eastern New
England. A 972 mb surface low is currently located about 100 miles
east-northeast of Cape Cod and continues to slowly track northeast
towards Newfoundland. Strong 850-700 mb warm-air advection pivoting
around the northwest quadrant of the surface low continues to foster
deep-layer lifting of a near-saturated airmass across northern New
England per 22Z mesoanalysis/21Z RAP forecast soundings. Recently,
IR satellite data has shown some cloud tops exhibiting cooling
trends across Maine, suggesting that this snow band is maturing.
KGYX dual-polarimetric radar data shows a 0.6-0.8 deg/km specific
differential phase at the 5.1 degree tilt within the Maine snow
band, indicative of very efficient dendrite production. 1-2 inch/hr
snowfall rates are likely ongoing with this band and should continue
for at least a couple more hours.

Meanwhile, given the close proximity of the surface low, blizzard
conditions are expected on or in close proximity to the Atlantic
Coast for at least a couple more hours, with 30+ kt gusts and
significantly reduced visibility expected. Within the 01-03Z time
frame, the surface low will be drifting away from New England,
with wind speeds and associated heavy snow expected to diminish
through the evening hours.
