Day 1 Convective Outlook
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0643 PM CST Sat Mar 05 2022
Valid 060100Z - 061200Z
...THERE IS AN ENHANCED RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS THROUGH LATE
EVENING ACROSS PARTS OF THE MIDDLE MISSOURI VALLEY INTO UPPER
MIDWEST...
...SUMMARY...
An organizing cluster of thunderstorms is expected to pose
increasing potential to produce damaging wind gusts across parts of
eastern Iowa and northeastern Missouri into northern Illinois and
southern Wisconsin this evening, and perhaps continue eastward into
southern portions of the Great Lakes region overnight.
...01Z Outlook Update...
Thunderstorm activity appears in the process of consolidating into
at least a broken squall line, extending from near/northeast of the
deepening cyclone center over central Iowa, southward ahead of the
trailing cold front. This appears focused near the leading edge of
the -20 to -24C 500 mb cold core of the short wave trough
accelerating east-northeastward toward the Great Lakes region
tonight.
As the surface cyclone center migrates northeastward toward the
Upper Great Lakes vicinity, models continue to indicate considerable
intensification of cyclonic, west-southwesterly mid-level flow from
the Iowa/Missouri border vicinity through northern Illinois this
evening, into Lower Michigan overnight. This is forecast to include
speeds increasing up to 70-90+ kt centered around the 700 mb level.
Despite the loss of daytime heating, steepening low-level lapse
rates beneath the mid-level cooling and modest boundary-layer
moisture ahead of the evolving squall line seem likely to maintain
vigorous convection at least into and through much of northern
Illinois and southern Wisconsin by 04-06Z.Aided by the
intensifying mid-level environmental flow to the rear of the
evolving cluster, convection appears likely to become increasingly
organized, with the potential to support increasingly widespread
downward transport of severe wind gusts to the surface.
Although guidance suggests that convection probably will weaken
overnight while spreading across and east of the southern Lake
Michigan vicinity, it is possible that at least occasional severe
surface gusts could continue into Lower Michigan and adjacent
portions of northern Indiana/northwest Ohio.
