THE MID-ATLANTIC...NORTHEAST AND SOUTHEAST...
...SUMMARY...
Marginally severe wind gusts and hail will be possible this evening
from northern Florida into southeast Georgia. A few strong wind
gusts may also occur in parts of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.
...Mid-Atlantic/Northeast
A shortwave trough will move northeastward across the central
Appalachians this evening, as a surface low moves across eastern
Ontario. A cold front will move eastward across the eastern
foothills of the central Appalachians as a pre-frontal trough
remains across the Mid-Atlantic coastal plains. Surface dewpoints to
the east of the pre-frontal trough are in the 50s F which is
contributing to weak instability. Thunderstorms are ongoing along
the trough from northern Maryland into northern New Jersey. These
storms will move eastward toward the coast of the next few hours.
The instability combined with 0-6 km shear in the 65 to 75 knot
range (according to the RAP) will likely be sufficient for a
marginal severe threat for a few more hours this evening. An
isolated threat for marginally severe wind gusts will be possible
with the stronger multicells.
...Northern Florida/Southeast Georgia...
An upper-level trough will move eastward across the mid Mississippi
Valley this evening as southwest mid-level flow remains across the
Southeast. At the surface, a cold front will advance southeastward
across south-central Georgia and the western Florida Panhandle this
evening. Ahead of the front, a band of thunderstorms are ongoing
from the eastern Florida Panhandle northeastward into southeast
Georgia. According to the RAP, the airmass ahead of this band is
moderately unstable. The WSR-88D VWP in far southern Georgia has 0-6
km near 40 knots with some speed shear in the boundary layer. This
may be enough for marginal wind-damage threat over the next couple
of hours while low-level lapse rates remain steep. Hail could also
occur with the stronger cells.
