The NWS Storm Prediction Center has issued a
* Tornado Watch for portions of
Central and southern Alabama
Western Florida Panhandle
Coastal Waters
* Effective this Tuesday night and Wednesday morning from 1040 PM
until 600 AM CDT.
* Primary threats include...
A couple tornadoes possible
Scattered damaging wind gusts to 70 mph likely
Scattered large hail events to 1 inch in diameter possible
SUMMARY...A broken squall line will continue eastward across Alabama
and the western Florida Panhandle tonight.The stronger storms will
be capable of a tornado and damaging wind risk.
The tornado watch area is approximately along and 80 statute miles
east and west of a line from 65 miles north of Montgomery AL to 15
miles south southwest of Pensacola FL. For a complete depiction of
the watch see the associated watch outline update (WOUS64 KWNS
WOU5).
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
REMEMBER...A Tornado Watch means conditions are favorable for
tornadoes and severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch
area. Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for
threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements
and possible warnings.

OTHER WATCH INFORMATION...This tornado watch replaces tornado
watch number 63...tornado watch number 64. Watch number 63 64
will not be in effect after 1040 PM CDT.
AVIATION...Tornadoes and a few severe thunderstorms with hail
surface and aloft to 1 inch. Extreme turbulence and surface wind
gusts to 60 knots. A few cumulonimbi with maximum tops to 500. Mean

SUMMARY...A prolonged period of freezing rain may continue through
09Z. At least 0.10 inch/hour freezing rain accumulation rates may
continue in the heaviest rain bands and where surface temperatures
remain below freezing.
DISCUSSION...925-700 mb warm-air advection continues across the
Upper MS Valley ahead of a surface low, accompanied by a swath of
moderate to occasionally heavy rainfall per latest MRMS mosaic radar
data. Across western parts of Upper MI into extreme northern WI,
beneath the low-level warm/moisture advection, surface temperatures
remain around 31-32 F, with surface 32 F wet-bulb temperatures
meandering south of the Upper MI peninsula. Model guidance consensus
suggests that at/below freezing surface temperatures should persist
along the WI/MI border for several hours tonight. The last few runs
of the HRRR, as well as HREF ensemble guidance, all suggest that
moderate to heavier freezing rain accretion rates (perhaps reaching
0.10 inches/hour) may occur from present to roughly 09Z.

The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 63, 64 continues.
SUMMARY...The severe threat across Tornado Watches 063 and 064
continues. A damaging gust or a tornado remains possible over the
next few hours. A downstream Tornado Watch will be needed by 04Z.
DISCUSSION...A QLCS continues to meander eastward across central
Alabama, with a few semi-discrete, transient supercells ongoing
along the Gulf Coastal area. These storms are progressing eastward
in an impressively sheared environment, but with gradually waning
instability. The area 88-D VADs depict large, curved hodographs,
with 300-600 m2/s2 0-1km SRH. While surface temperatures have been
cooling into the upper 60s/low 70s F, increasing surface dewpoints
may offset temperature-related buoyancy decreases given a continued
northward moisture flux.
Nonetheless, given the intense low-level shear and modest deep-layer
ascent present, any storm that manages to organize may produce a
damaging gust or a tornado. The best chance for a damaging gust
would be with the central AL QLCS, with a tornado equally likely
embedded within this QLCS, or with any supercell that can sustain
low-level rotation from central AL to the Gulf Coast. A downstream
Tornado Watch will be needed by 04Z across southern/eastern Alabama
into the Western Florida Panhandle to address the continuing severe
threat.

A regional severe weather outbreak is expected across the Lower
Mississippi Valley and middle Gulf Coast States today, with some
threat continuing into tonight. Tornadoes, some of which are
expected to be strong, and potentially widespread damaging winds
can be expected.

Review your severe weather safety procedures for the possibility

Severe thunderstorms will be capable of producing tornadoes, wind
damage and isolated large hail this evening across parts of the
central Gulf Coast states.
...Central Gulf Coast States...
Latest water vapor imagery shows an upper-level trough in the
southern Plains, with cyclonically-curved southwest mid-level flow
in the Southeast. A shortwave trough is located within this flow
across central and northwestern Alabama. At the surface, a moist
airmass is located from the Lower Mississippi Valley eastward across
the central Gulf Coast, where dewpoints are in the 60s and lower 70s
F. In this area, the RAP has MLCAPE ranging from 500 J/Kg in central
Alabama to around 2000 J/kg near Mobile. A line of strong to severe
thunderstorms is ongoing along the western edge of the stronger
instability across southern Mississippi and southeast Louisiana.
More discrete storms are ongoing in southwestern Alabama.
In addition to the instability, strong deep-layer shear is present
across the central Gulf Coast. The WSR-88D VWP at Mobile, Alabama
has 0-6km shear near 55 knots with 0-3 storm relative helicity
around 550 m2/s2. This environment should continue to be favorable
for supercells and tornadoes. The greatest tornado threat will be
near the axis of the low-level jet in southwest Alabama early this
evening, where a significant tornado will be possible. The stronger
supercells within a north-to-south band in southwestern Alabama will
also be capable of damaging wind gusts and isolated large hail.
Further to the west, an isolated tornado threat will also exist
early this evening with supercells that persist within a line of
storms across southern Mississippi and southeast Louisiana. The
severe threat will also continue further northeastward across
central and northern Alabama, but weak instability should keep the
severe threat more localized. Overall, the severe threat should
become more isolated late this evening as instability decreases
across the region. A lingering threat of damaging winds could
persist during the overnight across southeastern Alabama and the
Florida Panhandle.
