Severe thunderstorms are not expected through tonight across the
continental United States.
...DISCUSSION...
A highly meridional flow pattern is in place over the U.S. this
evening, with a upper-level trough over the western states and an
upper-level ridge from the mid Mississippi Valley into the eastern
Great Lakes. At the surface, a cold front is moving southeastward
across the northern Plains with a surface trough extending southward
into the central and southern High Plains. Moisture return is taking
place across the southern Plains and a strengthening low-level jet
is located in the central Plains.
In the western U.S., isolated to scattered thunderstorms will be
possible this evening in parts of the Sierra Nevada, in east-central
Arizona and in parts of eastern Utah/western Colorado. Instability
will be insufficient for a severe threat in these areas. In the
east, scattered thunderstorms will continue across parts of the
Florida Peninsula where a few strong wind gusts may occur. The
potential for severe is expected to diminish over the next hour or
two as the environment becomes slightly less favorable. Isolated
storms may also occur in parts of far eastern North Carolina later
tonight.
