2020 August 9 - VK NATIONAL NEWS BROADCAST ON VK1WIA

---------------------------------------------------------------------

 PREVIOUSLY ON WIA NATIONAL NEWS - AUGUST 30 - 2009 - Bryan VK3HXR

Now the MP3 file has been available for a while and has always been
used by the HF, repeater and IRLP broadcasters. If you're involved
with putting the news to air, you'll love the new system, especially
if you're writing automation scripts. Every episode is now uniquely
named with the date in the title and there are command line
podcatchers (like 'hpodder') to make your life easier. No more
wondering if the downloaded wianews_32.mp3 file is the most current
one - you'll know it is.

So head over to the wia.org.au website and you'll find the podcast
link on the News Broadcast Page in the News and Events section. And
if you're an iTunes user, you'll find it in the iTunes Podcast
Directory by searching for 'Wireless Institute'.

 PREVIOUSLY ON WIA NATIONAL NEWS - 2017 AUGUST 6 - Marcus VK5WTF

There is a lot to be said for an entry-level licence to be given a
taste of what Amateur Radio is really is all about, and in some ways
it's like a video game. Some people are happy with getting 50,000 in
Galaga, you've probably beaten most of your friends.

But if you want to the to 4 million, it takes time. Find a friend,
find a group, a club that will help you out, someone who has time
work out where your up to and will help you. Someone who can show you
how they do it and is willing help you even if you take a different
path. And remember, one day you might be able to help someone else,
and they might even be better at it than you, and you know what,
 that's OK.

 PERVIOUSLY ON WIA NATIONAL NEWS - AUGUST 2 2020 - VK2GK

Following the AGM, the WIA constitution requires the positions of
President and Vice- President to be confirmed at the first board
meeting after the AGM. The 2020 board met on Wednesday night via
teleconference ( as usual) . I am pleased to announce that Lee Moyle
has been appointed Vice-President, replacing Aidan Mountford whose
2 year directorship term finished at the completion of the AGM. I
hope you give Lee every support in his new role. I also advise that
I will be continuing in the role as WIA President.

 Call sign changes in VK

We Australian radio amateurs are no longer forced to change call sign
when upgrading to a higher level of licence or move to a different
part of the country, not that we had to moving interstate for many
 a year.

As reported over the last few weeks here on WIA National News, but
to reiterate particularly for our late commers, our ACMA have advised
that they are making changes that will facilitate access to a wider
range of digital modes for foundation licensees, and provide a
call sign for life" for all licensees by:

allowing all amateurs to obtain a three-letter call sign; and
removing the association between call sign suffixes and
 qualifications.

If you have a foundation, standard or advanced licence, you can
apply to the AMC for any available three-letter call sign.
You can also keep your current call sign if you wish, including if
you get a new qualification (for example, going from foundation to
 standard, or standard to advanced).

Two-letter call signs remain available to advanced licensees only.

 AMATEUR RADIO MAGAZINE ROLLS!

This is Roger Harrison VK2ZRH Editor-in-Chief of Amateur Radio
 magazine.

As foreshadowed last week, we completed proofing corrections and
filling a few holes here and there and . . . last Sunday evening . .
press-ready digital files of Issue Number 2 were sent to the printer.

The print run of the issue was scheduled to roll off the press on
Wednesday last "lockdown notwithstanding" and from there, once
completed and stapled, it's off to the mail house and newsagent
 distributor.

If you subscribe to the print copy of AR magazine, keep an eye out
for it in your letterbox real soon now.

Members can download a digital issue from the website.

 wiamembers.memnet.com.au/Home/tabid/3019/Default.aspx?returnurl=%2f

The WIA Board decided to make it available from Friday last.

Once again, let me pay tribute to all those who have striven to-date
to maintain the momentum of AR production, especially under the
uncertain circumstances prevailing over recent times.

So, production of Issue No. 3 is underway.

The Publications Committee had a Zoom meeting on Tuesday night, last
week. A new production schedule is being compiled and will be
circulated in due course. Articles large and small are being prepared
for Issue No. 3. We're back on the roller coaster! If you plan to
write an article - or have written one - that you would like to see
published this year, GET CRACKING !

This has been AR magazine Editor-in-Chief Roger Harrison VK2ZRH
 for VK1WIA News.

This is WIA Director, Peter VK8ZZ

First up I would like to direct our thoughts to our fellow amateurs
who are currently locked down in VK3. The increase in COVID-19
infections with unknown source is a worrying trend. Whilst the severe
restrictions in Victoria are understandable, that does not make them
 any easier.

I would encourage listeners across Australia to become more active
and to chat with those that are in lockdown in Victoria. We have all
experienced restrictions in some form over the last few months so we
all know how difficult the current restrictions can be. So hop onto
HF, put out a call and say hi. Alternatively hop onto a digital
reflector and put out a call.

I would encourage our Victorian listeners to get on the air and let
Amateur Radio provide at least some normality through Amateur radio.
It seems that it might be possible that other states may follow the
 Victorian lead, unfortunately.

Now, over the last few years I have noticed a worrying trend of
increased incursions into our bands. This is particularly noticeable
with operations on 40 metres by fishing vessels to the north, they
tend to operate on upper sideband. The WIA monitoring service has
indicated that it would be very desirable to have some HF monitoring
 accross the north of Australia.

Currently there are no KIWI SDR receiving stations along the northern
coast. I would encourage listeners to think about installing a
monitoring station such as KIWI SDR. I would also encourage listeners
to report incursions into our bands. Reports can be made online on
 the WIA web site

 wia.org.au/members/protecting/about/

The Board of the WIA is looking at ways to engage with clubs again by
way of video conferencing. There were a number of such board
visitations over the last few years and we are keen to pick this up
again. So if your club would like to meet with members of the
WIA Board then please contact secretary@wia.org.au and we can
 schedule an event.

That's all for me this week, This is WIA Secretary and Director
 Peter Clee VK8ZZ

 NEW ZEALAND

New Zealand introduce licence for the supply of transmitting
equipment and the RSM have released details of obligations for a
permitted person to supply unrestricted two-way radios

Amateur radio operators or suppliers that want to supply radios
transmitters in NZ must apply for a Licence to Supply Radio
Transmitters either as an individual or organisation. Suppliers are
defined as - persons in NZ that import, manufacture, distribute,
 sell or install.

If the supplier also wants to supply unrestricted two-way radios as
described under the Prohibition Notice, then they too must apply
to become a permitted person. Unrestricted radios can only be sold to
 qualified radio amateurs.

 JAPAN

7-CALL Amateur Radio Club Experience station approved

8J 1 YAB a 7-CALL Amateur Radio Club Experience station has been
approved by Kanto Bureau of Telecommunications and is a newly
established system authorized by the Japanese Radio Law.

Under this special permission, even unlicensed people are allowed
to operate the 'experience' station under the supervising of
 licensed amateurs.

This new operation aims to promote experience on wireless
communication technology, especially for younger people.

There are only a few approved experience station cases in all of
Japan and 8J1YAB is 2nd in Greater Tokyo.

7-CALL is Japanese callsign starting with 7 or 8 and it is a symbol
of what the JA's are calling "the golden age of Japanese amateur
 radio history."

 IRELAND

Radio Spectrum Interference complaints consultation is not good news
 for Amateurs.

Eire's communications regulator ComReg has published their response
and decision to the consultation on management of radio spectrum
 interference complaints

The document is a response to a consultation document published in
December 2019 which invited comments from interested parties.

IRTS made a submission and amateurs will be disappointed with the
new classification and response times. Complaints are in 3 categories

Class A get an immediate response
Class B gets a 5 working day response
Class C does not get a response time.

Amateur Radio complaints fall into the class C category.

The reference number is 20/62 and it can be found on
 comreg.ie

The ComReg document can be downloaded from

 USA

The ARRL Foundation has awarded a cash incentive to the University of
Alabama Huntsville's Centre for Cybersecurity Research and Education.

The grant will be used to get university students licensed, and then
integrate amateur radio communication protocols into extant models
used for cybersecurity testing for industrial system controls.

Analysis will be done on how well these protocols operate in this
setting, their security, and their feasibility for use in real-world
 industrial situations.

 Remembrance Day Contest.

This year is the 75th Anniversary of VP day, celebrated on the 15th

up as their combined score. A club can have several teams of three
operators. A club award will be offered to the club with the highest
combined score of all their submitted teams. Remember to send your
team name, operators, and your club name to vk4sn @ wia.org.au

All YLs and OMs are invited to take part, and it is hoped that
YLs especially will enjoy this friendly contest, which is not
necessarily about making the highest score, but to enjoy a chat
with those that we usually don't meet on air.

We would also love to hear some young and new YLs joining in
this year and some of the Committee will be handing out numbers
on HF and EchoLink during the contest.

This year we've seen droughts, floods, fires and a pandemic.
So girls, let's make 2020 the best Alara Contest ever.

 WIRELESS WEATHER

Researchers in the UK and the US have developed a new "sun clock"
that quantifies extreme space weather and pinpoints distinct on/off
times of high solar activity and space weather.

The sun clock will assist in planning to protect space and
ground-based infrastructure that is sensitive to space weather.
The study, "Quantifying the solar cycle modulation of extreme space
weather," was published in Geophysical Research Letters. It explains
that the sun clock uses the daily sunspot number record available
since 1818 to map solar activity over 18 solar cycles to a
 standardized 11-year cycle or "clock."

Oh and Solar Cycle 25 is Coming to Life

There's no longer any doubt. Solar Cycle 25 is coming to life.

A new sunspot Tuesday last, crackling with flares and adding to a
string of new-cycle active regions spread across the face of the sun.

 Is Solar Minimum over?

Find out the answer on Aug 4ths edition of Spaceweather.com.

 MEDIA WATCH

Deccan Herald is an English daily newspaper published from the
Indian state of Karnataka. It has seven editions so as you see
it is not a force to be reckoned with.

A great story obviously read my thousands recently was titled
"Why hobby electronics is a great thing to take up"

The Deccan Herald reports nothing is more satisfying than using a
piece of electronic equipment built at home with your own hands
 it's thrilling.

An advantage is that you can save money through the do-it-yourself
route. A DIY job will save you at least two-thirds of the cost.

Whether it is for the thrill of building equipment, repairing gadgets
or saving a bit of money, hobby electronics is very rewarding.
Yes, it requires a bit of learning in the beginning but once the
electronics bug bites you, it becomes an addiction.

Great to see such a story in mainstream press

On July 2nd, shortly before midnight local time in Hawaii, a dozen
amateur radio operators did something nobody had ever done before,
something that shows the best in amateur radio and could herald a
transformation in the role hams can play in emergencies.

The Hawaii hams felt an earthquake and sent detailed reports that
were immediately used by the United States Geological Survey (USGS)
to assess the magnitude and damage done by this latest tremor. Their
reports used a special email program, Winlink Express, that operates
through high frequency radio even when normal communication channels
 are down.

It wasn't the biggest earthquake, but it woke a lot of people up,
gave them a startle, but did minimal damage. The significance of the
event was that it proved"once again"that amateur radio operators had
found yet another way to play a crucial role in identifying and
responding to emergencies. In the best ham tradition, it all came
about through volunteer operators solving problems for an agency in
need. It's easy to see how this solution will save lives when there
is "as there will be"more devastating earthquakes and responders are
operating blind because of something called "the donut hole."

The donut hole refers to those in the centre of an earthquake or
 scene of emergency zone..the Donut
