Contest News
Remembrance Day Contest
Well, it is that time of the year once again, yes, the RD contest is on again next weekend the 15th and 16th of August from 03:00 UTC to 03:00 UTC. In the past us VK7â€Ös have done well and it would be good to continue to support the increasing number of participants. It is one of the popular contests and it presents a great chance to catch up with many of your on-air mates.
VK7 has won it for the four three years through high participation and we would love to retain the trophy so, we need high levels of participation to ensure our participation rate multiplier wins us the contest!
We recommend the VKCL and VK5DJ contest logging software which can be found at the link on the email edition of the broadcast.
https://www.mnds.com.au/vkcl/
https://www.vk5dj.com/rdcontest.html
These very capable programs make the keeping track of contacts, points and if you get CAT control working on some of the programs it can help eliminate errors in transcribing log data. The WIA website will get you a copy of the contest rules for 2020 and there are a few small changes to consider social distancing restrictions for multi op stations. By far the biggest advantage is that you can upload your log from within the program easily to eliminate the possibility of not submitting your log.
Don't forget the bonus bands of 160M and 23cm and above for the double points and the very attractive triple point bonus between 01:00 and 06:00 local time. Also there are double points for CW and RTTY so there is another option.
For local contact we are suggesting that you take a look on the following frequencies:
23cm - 1296.15MHz FM
70cm - 439MHz FM
2m - 146.5MHz FM
6m - 52.525MHz FM
See you on the air.

Snow, snow and more snow. The State is basking in white lawns, so I guess you won't need to mow for a while.
I understand the Club rooms still had a light covering of snow on Friday. Some wattle limbs had come down, but thankfully missed the club room. President Idris reports that there was once again a good attendance despite the cold. It looks to be that our decision to invest in a new slow combustion heater could not have been more timely, given this present very cold winter. We must again thank Ros for arriving at the club rooms early and putting match to paper to get Skywarmer alive, not to mention also getting the urn on and setting up the coffee morning nibbles. Speaking of which, I wonder if party pies and sausage rolls are yet back on the menu?
Training
Here is a reminder from NTARCâ€Ös Assistant Repeater Officer South, Michael VK7MRS.
“Huon District Scout station VK7HSD is looking for some on air help. With six scouts studying hard for their “F” Call licences, the next big step of training will be an "On Air Contact".
We are seeking to make voice contacts on Tuesday the 18th of August between 1700 and 1830 hours local time. The preferred 80 meter frequency of 3610 kHZ is proposed to be used, along with the VK7RTC/VK7RAA repeater.
It would be greatly appreciated if YOU could answer - calls from VK7HSD, while also remembering the need for a little patience for the training operators. After all, it can be a very nervous occasion. Can you remember your first HF contact?
A QSL card will most definitely be sent in appreciation of your support.
Please email your intentions to help out to vk7mrs@gmail.com or check out our QRZ page.
73 from Dale VK7FNED and Michael VK7MRS, VK7HSD co-ordinators.ť
I'm sure all listeners will again join with me in thanking Michael and Dale for their ongoing efforts to attract new members to our radio hobby Please assist on-air on August 18th if you are able to do so.
TechNet and Discord
In the absence of our weekly Tech Night sessions in the clubrooms, the focus very much continues to be on the NTARC 80 Meter net and its accompanying Discord on-line session. We hand over now to Nic VK7BEE, our NTARC Net Coordinator, to bring us all up to speed on happenings of last Wednesday night the 5th of August..
- Before the TechNet, Nic VK7BEE hosted the usual "TestNet"ť on 3.580 MHz at 19:00.
Five stations called in: VK7KPC Peter, VK7ZPD Phil, VK7KT Graham, VK3KYY Roger and VK3KPA Paul.
The day's TestNet was primarily focussed on CW. The active audio filter Nic referred to last week worked well. Peter VK7KPC had a great signal running 1watt CW. He was using a "special box"ť he purchased on line. Plug one side of the box into your CW key socket and, plug a keyboard into the other side of the box. Type on the keyboard what you want to send and “the box” converts it to CW! Fantastic! We know the Morse code purists may hate this, but it does send beautiful CW! Excellent Peter! Your 1watt CW was heard in VK3!
The Tech Net for NTARC commenced at 19:30 local on 3.567 MHz with "Busy Bee"ť Nic VK7BEE as Net Control VK7TAZ running 350 watts pep on 3567.0 MHz
The net had 11 stations. 80m conditions were VERY GOOD with fast QSB on some signals, along with static crashes!
Paul VK7KPA hosted our virtual meeting on Discord, thank you Paul, with 15 members logged-in including: VK7MX Bill and our Esteemed Secretary Yvonne VK7FYMX both in VK3. SWL Lewis was also logged-in!
Photos on Discord this week included:
Five pictures of snow in Tassie!
VK3KYY Roger posted a screenshot of the resonant frequency of his 80m vertical from a NanoVNA.
Alvin VK7ADQ/P2 posted a photo of his 1 to 6 power distribution kit.
VK7DW's satellite map, antenna controller and tracker.
A short video on CW vs TEXTING, which is fastest? CW of course!
Nic's recently built active CW filter and CW demodulator, and
Roger VK3KYY's 80m squid-pole vertical
VK7ADQ/P2 Alvin has almost completed his "One to Six" power board kit from the Waverley Amateur Radio Club, using Anderson Power Pole connectors. Soon for installation into his ex-Army Perenti Land Rover.
VK7KT "Flash Graham" is tracking lightning strikes on weatherzone.com.au - seems they are in Bass Strait.
VK5VST Simon, shared the way he made a vertical from heliax; along with long detailed descriptions of connections and waterproof sealing using epoxy, much better he says - rather than use the expensive heliax connectors.
VK7ALH Ross's horizontal loop antenna partly collapsed due to the weight of snow and ice, but he then found, after a makeshift repair with part of it only 1.2m off the ground, that he was getting better performance with local AND distant stations than previously, when it was more elevated! This "Boat-Anchor" continues to bring FT101s back to life - this week an FT101Zulu! - Now where did he put the power supply printed circuit board?!
VK7PD Peter posted information on 1296 MHz with tales of technical issues, and his struggles with Telstra's links being down, Phil VK7ZPD's Good Samaritan efforts and VK7DW Andrew's success with new gear utilising Mt Arthur as a reflector - to successfully contact VK7MO in Hobart.
VK7KPC Peter has solved technical issues by "scouting around" and his signal is greatly improved.
VK7ZPD "Detective Phil", completed an own-house survey and discovered where local QRM was coming from. He has since "had words with offending equipment" and now reports that "they are now behaving themselves - being much quieter!"ť Good discoveries Phil!
VK7DW "Andrew the Astronaut"ť described his contact on 23cms to the South. He has also received Slow Scan TV pics from the ISS (International Space Station) wow! He now has his tracking software controlling the antennas to follow satellites!
VK7KPA Paul "the Arduino Kid" tested various power levels and also posted a link for real time lightening maps at www.lightningmaps.org
VK2TZZ Paul called in from "the big North Island"ť giving signal reports and enjoying good propagation. Thanks Paul.....
And thank you all to those who called-in, joined the Discord group or were just listening. It was a great roll-up on such a snowy day!Â
...and I think it was the first time that all stations could hear each other! NOT just because of good propagation, but also because of the continued efforts you put in to improving your station's capabilities!Â
73 Nic VK7BEE on behalf of VK7TAZ, the Official Callsign of the Northern Tasmania Amateur Radio Club. Catch up next week "dah-di-dah"ť
Thanks once again for your report Nic. To our other listeners, if you have not yet taken part why not give it a try, either on 3.567 MHz (+/- QRM) next Wednesday evening at 7.30pm or on the Discord session. In fact, why not try both, as they complement each other very well, with additional coverage of items discussed on air being offered on the Discord session. As you have heard from Nic, Discord content can include circuit schematics, illustrations, photos and the like – not to mention the humour. I assure you that you won't be disappointed.
Future events
Equine event - Jolly Lette Memorial Ride, Saturday 22nd August, Santarena Park Scottsdale. Our Safety Communications Co-ordinator Norm VK7KTN reports:
- Our first ride of the year will be something different. People attending the ride need to comply with the social distancing and hand hygiene measures in place. It is essential to arrive with completed Corona virus (COVID-19) declarations, providing details of all people in their party. This form is available for download from the COVID BUSTER ride information page on the TEERA website. It is your responsibility to fill this form in before you enter the ride base.
A link to this form is also below.
https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5639baf8e4b0a98c69bcfc49/t/5f1ba6ad33dc544479f314e2/1595647663344/COVID_Declaration_Generic.pdf
It is essential all visitors and NTARC Crew register at the ride office on arrival. Anyone with any COVID-19 risk factors, as detailed on the COVID-19, declaration, should NOT attend. We are expecting a visit from the police to review our COVID safety.
Ride details to date, Electronic Timing will be used. 2 Checkpoint Locations Rodeo Road and Rex's Race.
Distances for the rides are 80Km, 40Km and 20Km. More information as it becomes available.
So if you can spare some time on that Saturday why not pop down to Scottsdale, a pleasant 1 hour or so drive from Launceston and utilise your radio skills.
Cheers, Norm VK7KTNť
Thanks Norm. If you can assist, please contact Norm by email at safetycomms.ntarc @ gmail.com or you can catch up with him at coffee session.
JOTA/JOTI 2020 - Scouts Tas JOTA/JOTI Coordinator, Peter VK7KPC advises that all things being equal, JOTA/JOTI will still be happening this year on weekend 17-18 Oct.
BUT this will still depend on progress made with COVID-19 situation here and worldwide.
Changes will probably include a social distancing around radio operating seating and other activities.
Rotations around activities will have to have cleaning operations taken into account, increasing turnaround time.
Larger stations may need to be in operation longer to take this into account.
Outside activities like fox hunting should be ok, again with cleaning time taken into account.
Hoping to have the Lea and Paton Park in operation again this year.
Hope I am not sounding too negative, just trying to be prepared for worsening situation.
Peter Dodd, Project Commissioner Radio and Electronics”
Thanks Peter, glad to hear planning is still proceeding. It is very much a case of waiting and seeing what happens around the world in relation to COVID-19.
Coffee mornings - currently every Friday in the NTARC Club rooms. Catch up time is from 10.00 am to noon and we look forward to seeing you all.
Please remember that aside from the good company, freely offered philosophical views, maybe less than expert political analysis, tall tales, funny stories and genuinely good fare on offer, these coffee events in the past have been normally a good opportunity to collect your QSL cards. Currently we have a few cards awaiting collection from past deliveries.
As I remind all each week, please demonstrate your appreciation of all the effort that goes into operating the club, its facilities and the other services we provide, especially in these abnormal and very trying times, enjoying the company, coffee, biscuits and cake and leaving a gold coin or two, or even a small bank note, in the jar to assist in our on-going operations.
Once again though, this must be all from NTARC for this week. Please bear with us as we attempt to bring club life back to normal, while balancing the need for continuing caution and with all complying with the social distancing requirements.
Finally
A reminder to all members that if you have any items of news you would like added to our weekly roundup, no matter how trivial then please email them to either of the following addresses
ntarc.emails @ gmail.com
Please note that it would be appreciated if any items for the weekly news could be sent in Times New Roman, 12 pt Font format.
For some time to come, with the exception of the occasional club emailed newsletter, the weekly broadcast news segment will continue as the medium for informing all about happenings, or lack thereof, in the local amateur radio world. It would be appreciated if any news, no matter how insignificant, could be sent no later than 17:00 hours on the Friday prior to broadcast, to allow its timely insertion into the NTARC segment.
That gives all a chance to get the NTARC segment together and off to Hobart in time for collation into the VK7 Broadcast. Your continued cooperation in this regard will be gratefully appreciated.
We will bring you all such contributions next Sunday morning.
73, Yvonne VK7FYMX, Secretary NTARC Inc

REAST August Antenna & Analyser Forum Night
Following on from our successful forum nights REAST ran an antenna and antenna analyser forum night for our August presentation night.
The format of the night was an open forum for anyone to bring along their experience of the antennas they are using, building and testing along with antenna analysers as well.
We started with Paul VK7FPCL and his random wire and 40m delta loop held up by a 12m squid pole and analysis of the performance of the antenna with his RigExpert AA35 Zoom antenna analyser.
We then moved to Ben VK7BEN and his End Fed Half Wave kit and the experiments with different wire types using his Mini600 antenna analyser. Ben then moved to his 2m / 70cm Moxon beam for satellite operation. These are both kits that Ben offers.
https://www.vk7ben.id.au/2017/01/09/experiments-with-an-end-fed-half-wave-antenna/
Martin VK7GN then showed an early antenna analyser bridge and it's use, then showed the progression of antenna analysers, from a noise bridge, Grid Dip Oscillator, MFJ SWR device, up to the present day HF & VHF digital SWR tester and modern antenna analyser. Martin then moved his adventure with 23cm antennas and the marvelously simple patch antenna. Martin then showed and described his UltraBeam antenna and described it's operation. This is mounted on a 40 foot tilt-over tower at his remote site.
Steve VK7OO then showed his 160m magnetic loop built to the VK5SFA design using two loops of heliax. Steve then showed his PEX gas pipe 20m magnetic loop to the design by VK5JST. This loop uses a copper pipe trombone tuning capacitor and is currently in use on his 20m SSTV receiving antenna.
Justin VK7TW then went through his 23cm yagi, HF linked dipoles, VK7JJ centre loaded vertical, G5RV 102ft dipole and Lindenblad satellite antennas. Justin then moved to showing his modified VK5JST antenna analyser, his MFJ 70cm antenna analyser and the NanoVNA.

https://vk7tw.wordpress.com/2015/01/26/vk7tw-linked-dipole-experiments/
Rod VK7TRF provided some comments about his GDO, NanoVNA, Comet600 and AUTEC HF/VHF antenna analysers. Ken VK7DY reminded everyone of the VK7ZAL low frequency experiments.
There were many questions along the way from the audience.
We will compile on the night a list of antennas and users and make it available so, if you are interested in a particular antenna you will know who to contact.
Thanks to all who participated and the night was stream and recorded and is available on the REAST YouTube Channel.

DATV Experimenter's Night
This Wednesday night's DATV Experimenter's Night will be the first of our monthly Working from the Shack interviews with Cedric VK7CL.
I am sure this will prove to be a riotous tour of Cedric's very entertaining life with many hilarious stories about radio, sailing, teaching, and everything in between. An interview not to be missed!
This interview gets underway Wednesday night from 7:30pm in the Queens Domain clubrooms. If it is too cold to make it up to the Domain why not take a look on RF or the YouTube Streaming channel and we will be taking questions via Repeater Two (146.700), DMR Talk Group 3807 and the YouTube Chat channel.
And a reminder that we go out on RF on 445.5MHz DVB-T 7MHz Standard Definition. So, if you have a TV, Set-top box or USB DTV Dongle that you can tune and scan 445.5MHz and you can see the Queens Domain, then you have a good chance of receiving the DATV Experimenter's Night Signal. Look out for VK7OTC. We also stream the nights on the REAST YouTube channel.

Technology News
5G is driving the RF power semiconductor market
Spending on RF power semiconductors (for <4 GHz and >3 W) continued to grow last year, nearing the US$2 billion mark, according to research from ABI Research.
The wireless infrastructure segment has "turned around in a big way", according to the company, and all other segments are up as well, with gallium nitride (GaN) continuing to make inroads.
- Gallium nitride has gained market share in 2019 and is forecast to be a significant force over the next few years,” noted Lance Wilson, Research Director at ABI Research.
- It bridges the gap between two older technologies, exhibiting the high-frequency performance of gallium arsenide combined with the power handling capabilities of silicon LDMOS.
- GaN is now a mainstream technology that has achieved more than a quarter of the market and, in the future, is poised to capture more.ť
Wireless infrastructure, representing about three-quarters of total sales, performed strongly, driven by 5G NR mid band.
The vertical market showing the strongest uptick in the RF power semiconductor adoption business, outside of wireless infrastructure, is commercial avionics and air traffic control, which Wilson describes as being now "significant market".
