VK7 QSL NEWS
Report - from Herman VK7HW Manager of the WIA VK7 Inwards QSL Bureau
The current list of Cards held as at 14 August 2020, is in the email version of the broadcast.
The list includes a listing of callsigns for cards received 16 July. Some of these cards have already been mailed out and/or delivered on an opportunity basis.
I note in correspondence from the ARRL that some countries have blocked mail due to the Covid-19 Pandemic and that some outward QSL Bureaus have closed. Comment is that some of these may not open up again. The ARRL is looking for support for LogBook of the World (LOTW).
If you received your callsign in recent years and see it in the list would you please email Herman advising him of the date you acquired the Call as I do have some cards from years back and Herman is finding some of those operators are new as the original owner is no longer active or Silent Key.
If you have any questions re QSL cards, please contact Herman by email vk7bureau(at)wia.org.au

It's that time of the week again. I trust everyone enjoyed the RD contest last weekend. Your scribe definitely enjoyed the respite from producing, or should that be fabricating? a weekly news segment. If you think that might have been an ever so subtle hint, how right you are! Something must be happening on the local radio front, beyond the weekly TechNet session. If so, why not tell us about it. The listening audience genuinely wants to hear about your efforts.
So, with nothing else having been reported, we must now pass the microphone to Nic VK7BEE to fill us in with not one but two weeks of TechNet reports, courtesy of last week's nil broadcast because of the RD Contest.
TechNet and Discord
12 Aug 2020 TechNet Report
Before the TechNet, Nic VK7BEE hosted a QRP "TestNet" on 3.580 at 19:00.
SIX stations called in: VK7PAK Kerry on 3 1/2 watts, VK7ZPD Phil on 5watts, VK7ZPE Peter, VK7KPC Peter on 1watt, VK7KMA Mark and VK7ALH on 10watts.
Nic made a short video receiving Kerry's CW on his home brew 80m receiver and posted it on Discord.
Tech Net for NTARC commenced on 3.567 MHz LSB at 19:30 local time with Nic VK7BEE as Net Controller using the NTARC club call sign VK7TAZ and running 325 watts PEP.
The net had 12 stations. 80m conditions were GOOD - some QSB but with static crashes 9+20db at times.
VK2TZZ Paul and Alvin VK7ADQ/P2 sent apologies for not being on 80m because of lightning - confirmed with a screen snapshot showing lightning strikes centred on Sydney - Good call! Coz "One flash and you're ash!"ť Thanks to Paul VK7KPA for once again hosting Discord, with 20 members logged-in.
To give you some idea of the different topics on our TechNet/Discord nights, here's this week's offerings!
Photos and a Video included:
- 3 photos of Alvin VK7ADQ's antenna and QTH
- Nic's video of Kerry VK7PAK's QRP CW transmission
- Kerry's beautiful brass "pounder"ť Morse key
- VK3KYY Roger's VNA plot of his 9m centre loaded vertical.
- VK7AN Alan's S meter of Nic's signal and a portable wire antenna for SOTA.
- VK7ZIR Idris's SM-10 mike and console
- VK7PD Peter's two element homebrew 2m Yagi
- VK7DW Andrew's snapshot of his logged QSO with P29LL
- VK7ZPD Phil's VNA Version 2 plots well up to 3 GHz and a photo of the lightning map around Sydney.
- Andrew VK7DW posted an FT101ZD photo for Ross VK7ALH
- VK7KPC posted a shot from WSPRNET showing spot database contacts for 160m and
- A couple of photos of PC boards from Roger VK3KYY and Bill VK7MX of automatic antenna matching kits available on the internet.
And Now AN EARLY WARNING OF AN ON-AIR RADIO....COMMEMORATION.
Nic mentioned about the possibility of hosting the commemorative callsign VI75WW2 - for the 75th anniversary of Victory at the end of World War 2. This will be for a three-day block between 1st of September and the 12th of November. Anyone else who is interested in hosting please contact VK3DAC Fred Swainston at: VK3dac @ wia.org.au
VK7ALH Ross's horizontal loop antenna is still droopy! A tree he was working on has become considerably shorter. Thanks to Mr Snowman from last week!! Ross continues his exploits with yet another FT101D.
VK7KT Graham brushed the dust off a standby ICOM 735 to make sure it's ok - Have you checked your stand by rig lately?
VK7KPC Peter made comparison tests between two antennas; a vertical and a dipole. The dipole won!
VK7ZPD Phil, mentioned his mini VNA (Vector Network Analyser) Version 2, and his work on 1296 MHz
VK7DW Andrew had his first foreign satellite contact into PNG - Port Moresby. VK7PD Peter posted information on Discord about 1296 MHz and mentioned VK7KMA Mark's success on 23 cms.
VK7ZIR Idris tested a different microphone this week an Icom SM-10 with its own console with VU meter and graphic equaliser!
VK7PAK Kerry was using his beautiful "brass key" earlier, and he tried out a short 80m antenna, for portable working. VK7ZPE Peter called-in to give reports. VK7KPA Paul tested his mike gain for reports and, at the last minute....
VK7AT Alan called-in to say he was getting the original Maximite kit to build a CW project!
Thank you all to those who called-in, joined the Discord group or were just listening. It was a great roll-up!
73 from Nic VK7BEE on behalf of VK7TAZ, the Official Callsign of the Northern Tasmania Amateur Radio Club. Catch up next week "dah-di-dah"
19 Aug 2020 TechNet Report
Firstly a poem!
Whizz Bangs and Very Loud Lightening Crashes!
Check your antenna and receiver for Static Bashes!
The Lightning Strikes in the Tasman Sea,
Created havoc for VK7 B double E!
Thank goodness for Discord
Our virtual Link
Which brought calm, and photos
...and time to think!
What a Cracker of a Night that was! A disaster on 80m with static crashes at 5/9+20 to 30 dB over!
Somewhere I read that if we could capture the energy in one lightning strike, it would keep Melbourne's electricity needs going for 20 years!
Before the TechNet, VK7BEE hosted a "TestNet" on 3.580 at 19:00.
Three stations braved the raucous conditions: Alan VK7AT, VK7KPC Peter on CW with 1watt, and a valiant effort from VK3KYY - all signals were very difficult to copy.
Tech Net for NTARC commenced on 3.567 MHz LSB at 19:30 local time with Nic VK7BEE as Net Controller using the NTARC club call sign VK7TAZ and running 400 watts PEP.
The HF net had a total of 9 stations. 80m conditions were still an absolute disaster - hats off to those who have the commitment to make the effort in true Aussie spirit of "giving it a go"ť
Merci Monsieur Paul VK7KPA hosting Discord, with about 15 members logged-in.
Here's this week's offerings on Discord.
Photos included:
- Graeme VK7KT's map of lightning strikes in NE Tasman Sea
- Phil VK7ZPD's 23cm linear
- Ross VK7ALH's WW2 AMT-150 transmitter
- Roger VK3KYY also posted another scary map of lightning strikes in the Tasman Sea.
Congratulations to all VK7s who took part in the Remembrance Day Contest - don't forget to put your logs in!
VK7ZPD Phil, tried out WSPR on 40m with Paul VK2TZZ and was delighted with results into Europe. Perhaps RTTY soon!
VK7DW Andrew had first Oscar 7 satellite contacts into ZL and VK3. He is trying out APRS with great success.
VK2TZZ Paul tried a contact but was initially drowned-out by the tricks of nature, then propagation improved helping to quell the static.
VK3KYY Roger, not to be outdone, also managed to push static into the background.
VK7ALH Rosco's horizontal loop aka droopy-corner antenna is about to be uplifted some 15metres with a telescopic pair of aluminium poles. His WW2 transmitter is undergoing refurbishment with an add-on Geloso VFO.
VK7PD Peter is interested in trying out RTTY.
VK7KPC Peter was determined to keep trying, but it was a struggle!
VK7ZPE Peter, with a very strong signal, called-in to give reports.
After a night like that, we all deserved “a BEX and a lie down”
Thank you all to those who made an effort and called-in, joined the Discord group or were just listening. It was still a good night.
Those stations on 80m have the satisfaction of having coped with demanding conditions "to get their message through"ť.
Imagine how the operators in the past coped with AM and CW in those conditions!
73 from Nic VK7BEE on behalf of VK7TAZ, the Official Callsign of the Northern Tasmania Amateur Radio Club.
Catch you all next week.ť
Many thanks for those reports, Nic
Equine event - By the time this news goes to air many NTARC members will be recovering from providing Safety Communications at the Jolly Lette Memorial ride held at Santarena Park, Scottsdale yesterday 22 August. We trust the weather was kind to you all and all went well. Hopefully we will be able to bring you an update of this event in next weekend's news.
UHF Radios available
Moving right along, we now hear from Life Member Brian VK7RR who has some good news about some surplus gear becoming available, so we will now hand over to him. I have for sale a quantity of Simoco 9000 series UHF two way radios.
The first type are T/U band which means they will cover both the amateur band and UHF CB. These are available programmed to the channels of your choice in both amateur and CB channels on production of your amateur licence.
The radios will come putting out approximately 25 watts on the amateur band and not more than the maximum power allowed on UHF CB, with a hand mic with digital display showing the operating channel and switches for on/off, volume etc.
The second lot of radios are U/W band which cover UHF CB and are available to
non-amateurs. I only have 5 of these left as they are much in demand. These will come with your choice of citizens band channels.
The Simoco radio is very sensitive on receive and a very robust radio.
All radios come with mic, external speaker and power and speaker plug. (The power plugs are in most cases very short but are easy to replace with your appropriate length).
All radios are available for $170 each, of which $20 will go to NTARC. Postage is additional, and estimated to be about $20.
These radios have all been aligned and tested by me in the past week. All meet their commercial specifications.
Payment by direct deposit only.
Contact Brian VK7RR at 0418124164.
Future events
JOTA/JOTI 2020
Scouts Tas JOTA/JOTI Coordinator, Peter VK7KPC advises that all things being equal, JOTA/JOTI will still be happening this year on weekend 17-18 Oct.
BUT this will still depend on progress made with COVID-19 situation here and worldwide.
Changes will probably include a social distancing around radio operating seating and other activities.
Rotations around activities will have to have cleaning operations taken into account, increasing turnaround time.
Larger stations may need to be in operation longer to take this into account.
Outside activities like fox hunting should be ok, again with cleaning time taken into account.
Hoping to have the Lea and Paton Park in operation again this year.
Hope I am not sounding too negative, just trying to be prepared for worsening situation.
Peter Dodd, Project Commissioner Radio and Electronics.ť
Thanks Peter, glad to hear planning is still proceeding. It is very much a case of waiting and seeing what happens around the world in relation to COVID-19.
Thanks Peter.
Coffee mornings - currently every Friday in the NTARC Club rooms. Catch up time is from 10.00 am to noon and we look forward to seeing you all.
Please remember that aside from the good company, freely offered philosophical views, maybe less than expert political analysis, tall tales, funny stories and genuinely good fare on offer, these coffee events in the past have been normally a good opportunity to collect your QSL cards. Currently we have a few cards awaiting collection from past deliveries.
As I remind all each week, please demonstrate your appreciation of all the effort that goes into operating the club, its facilities and the other services we provide, especially in these abnormal and very trying times, enjoying the company, coffee, biscuits and cake and leaving a gold coin or two, or even a small bank note, in the jar to assist in our on-going operations.
Once again though, this must be all from NTARC for this week. Please bear with us as we attempt to bring club life back to normal, while balancing the need for continuing caution and with all complying with the social distancing requirements.
Finally
A reminder to all members that if you have any items of news you would like added to our weekly roundup, no matter how trivial then please email them to either of the following addresses
ntarc.emails@gmail.com
Please note that it would be appreciated if any items for the weekly news could be sent in Times New Roman, 12 pt Font format.
For some time to come, with the exception of the occasional club emailed newsletter, the weekly broadcast news segment will continue as the medium for informing all about happenings, or lack thereof, in the local amateur radio world. It would be appreciated if any news, no matter how insignificant, could be sent no later than 17:00 hours on the Friday prior to broadcast, to allow its timely insertion into the NTARC segment.
That gives all a chance to get the NTARC segment together and off to Hobart in time for collation into the VK7 Broadcast. Your continued cooperation in this regard will be gratefully appreciated.
We will bring you all such contributions next Sunday morning.
73, Yvonne VK7FYMX, Secretary NTARC Inc

DATV Experimenter's Night – Working From the Shack interview with VK7CL
We have moved our Working from the Shack series to a monthly interview with a notable VK7 amateur. This month it is Cedric Lockley VK7CL on August 12th.
Cedric started with his Grandmother inspiring his radio listening with late night cricket from the BBC in 1948. Cedric then went into the inspiration for his callsign being Melvyn Conway the original VK7CL that appears on the WIA Tasmanian Division Honour Roll.
Cedric went through his early training with the Hydro Electric Commission as a Cadet Electrical Engineer. In 1958 Cedric became ill and as a result he was left with a heart murmur. Cedric went back to the farm he grew up on in Judbury.
Cedric then became a service station manager and it was suggested that he try hi hand at teaching. His first school was Brooks High School. Cedric Married Janet in 1963 and they went on the have three children. Cedric moved to Cosgrove High School and started studying at UTAS that included geology.
Cedric moved to Geilston Bay High School and taught mathematics, science and computer science. He started building a yacht in his front yard and proved himself as a navigator in navigation trials which lead to seven Sydney to Hobart races.
Cedric relates the story of him being drafted in to the Navy as a navigator on a boat in the Sydney - Vila race.
Whilst housesitting in Brisbane and touring around with CMCA chapter he came across an odd looking radio in a camper van and asked what it was. An ICOM IC706MkIIG and how do I operate it - "you'll need a licence for that". Cedric undertook the training with the Townsville ARC with help fro Wallaby Bob VK4WJ and Master VK4IGM and passed in 2005. On returning to VK7 Cedric became VK7CL.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwWELW1XXck
We took question and comments.
Thanks to Cedric and Janet for a great night.

DATV Experimenter's Night
Last Wednesday night the DATV Experimenter's Night was all about contesting and NanoVNA-Hs!
Murray VK7ZMS, Richard VK7ZBX and Justin VK7TW started the night with a wrap-up of the Remembrance Day Contest over the last weekend.
This involved the setup of stations and preparations for the contest. Murray related his solution for making the 10GHz rig water proof. This involved a large wooden packing case on the back of the ute pointed at the mountain. The LO rig was bought inside the Club shack and Murray didn't have to worry about the persistent rain during the night.
Justin then described his 10GHz setup which involved being setup on a concrete patio area with a SOTA hootchie tent over the equipment which prevented most of the persistent rain from falling on the equipment during the night.
Murray scored over 1100 point and both Richard and Justin scored over a 1000 points. There was an analysis of the flow of contacts using the VKCL statistics area to show that many of the points were made during the 1:00-6:00am timeslot.
Warren VK7WN supplied a comparison of the logs uploaded for each state and Steve VK7OO supplied a comparison of the calculated participation rate and the percentage that each state needs to find to beat VK7. Suffice it to say we are quietly confident!
There was a discussion of the learnings and this included making more VHF channels as the VHF pileup at the beginning and end of the contest prevented many from making contacts.
The group then went through the 2020 Trans-Tasman contest and congratulations to Catherine VK7GH who came third in the Single Operator - High Power section and the other VK7s who participated. Thanks to Murray, Richard, Warren and Steve.
Justin then took the audience through an interesting USB key dilemma - the key looked perfect however what had happened was the cover on the key had come apart and allowed the PCB to fall out then the case had come back together making the key look complete. Justin had lost the PCB out of a USB key without realising! Fortunately there was nothing important or sensitive on the key so, not much loss but an interesting scenario all the same.
Justin then demonstrated the NanoVNA-H that had recently arrived. Justin had ordered as this version of the NanoVNA as it goes to 1.5GHz on the 5th harmonic. At around $120 this antenna analyser is a very cheap option with a huge range of capability and an open source community supporting it.
Justin demonstrated the NanaoVNA-H by sweeping a FM band pass filter and a 630m lowpass filter. Justin also demonstrated an RF demonstrator PCB that he purchased with his first NanoVNA. This PCB provides a huge range of small RF circuits and the accompanying Smith Chart plots to test the VNA.
We finished with comments via Youtube Chat, 2m and DMR TG 3807 - thanks to those who called in.
The night was recorded and can be found on the link in the email edition of the broadcast.
https://youtu.be/7_jQNKUdgeE
This Wednesday night we will be continuing with our NanoVNA focus and show a range of the practical functions available on the NanoVNA. There will also be an update on the RD Logs from VK7 and getting the DATV Studio ready for DATV QSO Party. We get underway Wednesday night from 7:30pm in the Queens Domain clubrooms. If it is too cold to make it up to the Domain why not take a look on RF or the YouTube Streaming channel and we will be taking questions via Repeater Two (146.700), DMR Talk Group 3807 and the YouTube Chat channel.
And a reminder that we go out on RF on 445.5MHz DVB-T 7MHz Standard Definition. So, if you have a TV, Set-top box or USB DTV Dongle that you can tune and scan 445.5MHz and you can see the Queens Domain, then you have a good chance of receiving the DATV Experimenter's Night Signal. Look out for VK7OTC. We also stream the nights on the REAST YouTube channel.

We get underway with the DATV Experimenter's Night from 7:30pm this Wednesday 26th August 2020.
A reminder that the REAST DATV Experimenterâ€Ös will be participating in the Global DATV QSO Party over the night of Friday 28th August and Saturday 29th August "if you want to be involved up in the Queens Domain studios" please let me know.
