Miena QSO Muster.
Saturday October 24th will be the Miena QSO Muster. This one- time event will be held at the Great Lake Community Hall, (same venue as the Ham Fest). As we have all been grounded and not been able to have any meetups, let's all have a great day out at the Great Lake.
This will be an informal day, so, bring along the XYLs, YLs, or partners. In fact, anyone who would enjoy a day out. There will be tea and coffee, scones, and a sausage sizzle provided as part of the "welcome back to Miena day".
Also, if you want to have a car-boot, pre-loved swap-and-go, then please bring along your pre-loved and swap gear.
Doors will be open from 10am till 3 pm. We recommend you go mobile with your radios and we will be monitoring the local UHF repeater, VK7RIN (438.5) for your check-ins along the way. Also, 40 metres will be running.
A gold coin or some plastic stuff donation will help with the heating and scones.
Registration at the door for name tags and hand sanitation and we can take well over 100 people with the restrictions now lifted at this venue. There is plenty of room for distancing.
For further details or any other ideas, please email Ken VK7DY at vk7dyken @ gmail.com.

We are now into Spring and the weather is slowly taking a turn for the better, well at least it is where I am located currently. Hopefully it is too back in VK7. We have certainly had a few pleasant evenings this week, sitting on the rear deck of the boat with the odd glass or two of wine, watching the sun go down. All very relaxing.
Since this is the first weekend in September it also means today is Father's Day, so Happy Father's Day to all fathers listening in this morning.
We hand over now to one of our father NTARC members, Nic VK7BEE who I'm sure will be enjoying the day. It seems he decided to give himself an early gift in the form of a new two-letter callsign, VK7WW. Although he says he plans to ease into use of the new call, I understand that its choice gave rise to a variety of suggested phonetic versions - some decidedly ribald - on the TechNet last Wednesday. Anyway, let's hear from the man himself, as he brings us up to date on the happenings there and on the accompanying Discord on-line session.
TechNet and Discord - Wednesday 2nd September- Before the TechNet, VK7BEE hosted a "TestNet" on 3.580 at 19:00 local.
Alan VK7AT called in, then Peter VK7KPC with 1w of CW - heard in VK3 by Keith VK3MKE, and Rosco VK7ALH also called in. Peter continued to answer questions using CW, excellent Peter!
Tech Net for NTARC commenced on 3.567 MHz LSB 19:30 local time.
The HF net had a total of 11 stations. 80m conditions were ok, but band noise seemed higher than normal and fast QSB was apparent, especially on lower power signals.
Nic VK7BEE was Net Control VK7TAZ running 280 w PEP on 3567.0 MHz.
Please note we are still contemplating the TechNet CHANGE OF FREQUENCY so if you have a suggestion, please contact NicVK7BEE @ wia.org.au
Paul - VK7KPA hosted Discord, with 11 members logged-in.
Photos on Discord included:
- Ross VK7ALH's HF loop improvements;
- Roger VK3KYY's makeshift tree antenna with loading coil - his normal vertical has “gone for a burton”;
- Allen VK7AN's speech-compressor microphone for an FT817 and similar rigs improving the transmitted signal;
- VK3KYY's Snapshot of his antenna tests on a WSJT-X map and
- VK7PD on Optical Light communications - 133km path; and, a GPS setup for diversity reception.
Stefan VK7ZSB noted that this is the 22nd TechNet that has been held since COVID 19 appeared!
Bill VK7MX and Yvonne VK7FYMX Maritime Mobile, struggle to hear the net with a 1/8 wavelength vertical piece of wet string in high winds at the Gippsland Lakes.
Which reminds us that 80% of our efforts for any amateur station must go into the antenna, and 20% into the station equipment....unless you are very limited being on a boat....but then the imagination kicks in!
What about a kite, a drone holding a wire, a weather balloon, even a rocket!? - well perhaps not a rocket, because overs would be very short and you'd go through lots of rockets! Quite apart from the constant re-tuning! Radio amateurs are inventive!
In the words of Hedley Lamar (Played by Mel Brooks in "Blazing Saddles") - "My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives"
......Just like Nic in his shack! Hi!
VK7ALH Rosco, using his FT101B, continues to improve his HF horizontal loop. His signal seems to have changed, lower strength with local stations, but great through the DX window on 80m - getting 5and 6 with 100w into the USA. Confirming that he has less vertical radiation for local stations and a lower take-off for DX.
VK7KPC Peter is working on a tape measure Yagi for 2m fox hunting, for the Scouts.
VK3MKE Keith at Ferntree Gully, Melbourne, joined us using an FT101B and an OCF (off centre fed) Dipole.
VK7ZPD Phil is developing a stepper-motor rotator for his 23cm antenna.
VK7DW Andrew has almost finished a Hermes Loop (pronounced "HER-MEES") for receiving HF. This is in an effort to combat suburban noise.
VK7KMA Mark has just completed building a 19 element loop Yagi for 23cm from an ARRL design. We are looking forward to hearing about the test results Mark.
VK7KPA Paul called in having made some changes to his OCF dipole; nothing dramatic Paul. Happy to help if you want to make further changes! - Like a Double Extended Zepp!
VK7ZIR Idris called in working off battery power running 5w from an IC705 and received some good reports.
VK2KVP Det called in from Murrumbateman and although was not heard by many local stations, he could hear quite a few, and gave signal reports. The net gave him the opportunity to make microphone audio adjustments, which greatly improved his signal.
VK7PD Peter drew attention to the photos he posted of the "red light" communications by Rex VK7MO and Richard VK7ZBX. A distance of 133km was achieved from reflecting light off the clouds at night! Great! I wonder what the frequency of red light is! Ha!
Thank you to all those amateurs who called in to share their technical exploits. It's always great fun to share and assist!
73 Nic VK7BEE on behalf of VK7TAZ, the Official Callsign of the Northern Tasmania Amateur Radio Club. Catch up next week! Dah-di-dah
UHF Radios available
Thanks Brian, especially for thinking of your fellow NTARC members. We have provided full details of Brian's offer on the email version of this morning's broadcast.
For the Text version only, replace the previous item with the following
I have for sale a quantity of Simoco 9000 series UHF two way radios.
The first type are T/U band which means they will cover both the amateur band and UHF CB. These are available programmed to the channels of your choice in both amateur and CB channels on production of your amateur licence.
The radios will come putting out approximately 25 watts on the amateur band and not more than the maximum power allowed on UHF CB, with a hand mic with digital display showing the operating channel and switches for on/off, volume etc.
The second lot of radios are U/W band which cover UHF CB and are available to
non-amateurs. I only have 5 of these left as they are much in demand. These will come with your choice of citizens band channels.
The Simoco radio is very sensitive on receive and a very robust radio.
All radios come with mic, external speaker and power and speaker plug. (The power plugs are in most cases very short but are easy to replace with your appropriate length).
All radios are available for $170 each, of which $20 will go to NTARC. Postage is additional, and estimated to be about $20.
These radios have all been aligned and tested by me in the past weeks. All meet their commercial specifications.
Payment by direct deposit only.
Contact Brian VK7RR at 0418124164.

Future events
Fortnightly Tech night resumes - Wednesday 9th September at the NTARC Club rooms 19:30 hours until whenever. Continuous tea and coffee, although a gold coin donation for the evening would be appreciated. The Discord on-line session that normally accompanies the TechNet 80 meter event will also be alive for this return to the clubrooms, to allow members who cannot be present in person to continue their participation.
Equine event - Saturday 12 September, Sassafras, Wattleford Park. Norm VK7KTN, our Safety Communications Coordinator now brings us the latest update on this rapidly approaching NTARC outing.
"This event is being held at the Perry property "Tractor on the Pole". Ride base will be located at 7738 Bass Highway, Sassafras. Coordinates are S41.300144, E146.516148.
As was required at the recent Scottsdale ride, all crew and visitors attending the ride need to comply with the social distancing and hand hygiene measures in place. It is essential to arrive with completed Corona virus (COVIC-19) declarations, providing details of all people in their party. This form is available for download from the COVID BUSTER ride information page on the TEERA website. It is your responsibility to fill this form in before you enter the ride base. The link to the required form is https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5639baf8e4b0a98c69bcfc49/t/5f3caeba82d51e18e92dae72/1597812412277/COVID_Declaration_Generic_v2.pdf
There will be three rides, the 80Km to commence at 07:30, the 40Km to head off at 08:30 hours and the 20km ride will follow at 09:30 hours. Hopefully the weather will be kinder to us at this event.
If you can assist at this event then please contact Norm VK7KTN by email at safetycomms.ntarc @ gmail.com.
Fortnightly TechNet and Discord - Wednesday 16th September As advised last week, with the recommencement of in-clubhouse Wednesday evening Tech Nights on a fortnightly basis this coming week, the 80M Wednesday TechNet sessions have now moved to the alternate Wednesday evenings, although the Discord on-line session will continue to be run each Wednesday. That means the next TechNet on 80 M will be held at 7.30 pm on Wednesday 16 September. May we suggest that you note your calendar now, so you don't appear on the TechNet frequency this coming week, calling plaintively but going unanswered, or for that matter rocking up at the Club room on the wrong night the following week.
JOTA/JOTI 2020 - Scouts Tas JOTA/JOTI Coordinator, Peter VK7KPC advises that all things being equal, JOTA/JOTI will still be happening this year on weekend 17-18 Oct.
BUT this will still depend on progress made with COVID-19 situation here and worldwide.
Changes will probably include a social distancing around radio operating seating and other activities.
Rotations around activities will have to have cleaning operations taken into account, increasing turnaround time.
Larger stations may need to be in operation longer to take this into account.
Outside activities like fox hunting should be ok, again with cleaning time taken into account.
Hoping to have the Lea and Paton Park in operation again this year.
Hope I am not sounding too negative, just trying to be prepared for worsening situation.
Peter Dodd, "Project Commissioner Radio and Electronics"
Coffee mornings - currently every Friday in the NTARC Club rooms. Catch up time is from 10.00 am to noon and we look forward to seeing you all.
Please remember that aside from the good company, freely offered philosophical views, maybe less than expert political analysis, tall tales, funny stories and genuinely good fare on offer, these coffee events in the past have been normally a good opportunity to collect your QSL cards. Currently we have a few cards awaiting collection from past deliveries.
As I remind all each week, please demonstrate your appreciation of all the effort that goes into operating the club, its facilities and the other services we provide, especially in these abnormal and very trying times, enjoying the company, coffee, biscuits and cake and leaving a gold coin or two, or even a small bank note, in the jar to assist in our on-going operations.
Once again though, this must be all from NTARC for this week. Please bear with us as we attempt to bring club life back to normal, while balancing the need for continuing caution and with all complying with the social distancing requirements.
Finally
A reminder to all members that if you have any items of news you would like added to our weekly roundup, no matter how trivial then please email them to either of the following addresses
ntarc.emails @ gmail.com
Please note that it would be appreciated if any items for the weekly news could be sent in Times New Roman, 12 pt Font format.
For some time to come, with the exception of the occasional club emailed newsletter, the weekly broadcast news segment will continue as the medium for informing all about happenings, or lack thereof, in the local amateur radio world. It would be appreciated if any news, no matter how insignificant, could be sent no later than 17:00 hours on the Friday prior to broadcast, to allow its timely insertion into the NTARC segment.
That gives all a chance to get the NTARC segment together and off to Hobart in time for collation into the VK7 Broadcast. Your continued cooperation in this regard will be gratefully appreciated.
We will bring you all such contributions next Sunday morning.
73, Yvonne VK7FYMX, Secretary NTARC Inc

REAST Presentation Night Wrap-Up
Is the ICOM IC-705 an FT-818 Killer?
Justin VK7TW took the capacity audience through the ICOM IC-705 specifications. Justin then covered the configuration and adjustment out of the box and moving on to some of the impressive features of IC-705 including - multi function menu items, digital twin band pass tuning, spectrum scope, miniscope for RTTY, Audio scope and auto tuning feature.
Justin covered what the MicroSD card and inbuilt GPS is used for, the timeset from NTP using the inbuilt Wireless LAN (WLAN). Then the SWR graphing feature and metering options, the speech button, Bluetooth pairing, WLAN functions, recording options and partial reset function.
Then covered the free programming software and firmware updating and D-STAR DV setup. There was a comment that the Advanced Manual section for D-STAR configuration was 50 pages long!
The accessories shown included the LC-192 Backpack, Bluetooth headset and Remote control software. The picture utility software for iPhone was also shown and this software is also available for Android Devices.
Justin showed some initial frequency stability tests that he undertook with Rex VK7MO and concluded that the IC-705 appears to have the same frequency stability issues as the IC-9700.
Justin then went through pricing and the features of the IC-705 versus the FT-818 and left the audience the conclude if it was a FT-818 killer.
Justin then demonstrated the feature set on the big screen with the IC-705 magnified under the Elmo projector.
There were many good questions that were covered and attendees could then play with the transceiver.

DATV Experimenter's Night
"Working from the Shack" VK7CL Part 2
This Wednesday night we have our monthly shack interview and following some great feedback we are getting Cedric Lockley VK7CL back into the shack to find out more about his involvement in radio.
There will be many hilarious stories including the one about the huge Mud Crab going missing after a plane trip to Queensland!
We get underway with the interview from 7:30pm and Cedric will be in the DATV Studio for this interview.
So, why not come up to the Queens Domain clubrooms and see what we get up to. If it is too cold to make it up to the Domain why not take a look on RF or the YouTube Streaming channel and we will be taking questions via Repeater Two (146.700), DMR Talk Group 3807 and the YouTube Chat channel.
And a reminder that we go out on RF on 445.5MHz DVB-T 7MHz Standard Definition. So, if you have a TV, Set-top box or USB DTV Dongle that you can tune and scan 445.5MHz and you can see the Queens Domain, then you have a good chance of receiving the DATV Experimenter's Night Signal. Look out for VK7OTC. We also stream the nights on the REAST YouTube channel.

Microwave News
First AR 725GHz Contact
On the 20 July 2020 Michael DB6NT and Andreas DB2NP completed a contact over a distance of 20m with reports of 529 with air temperature of 25 degreeC and humidity of 51% and dew point of 13.7 degreesC.
The path attenuation was 288dB per kilometre and as comparison the path attenuation at 10GHz for EME (700,000km) is also 288dB!
To get to 725,760.6MHz Michael Kuhne DB6NT tripled his 241,920MHz oscillator for transmit and for reception the LO frequency of the receiver mixer is 120,888MHz which is the sixth harmonic of 725,328MHz and if you subtract 725,760.6MHz from 725,328MHz you get 432.6MHz Intermediate frequency.
The dishes used are 40cm parabolic which have a gain of 67dB at 725GHz
Some of the learning from the report are:
Using better oscillators to minimize jitter
Optimization of the transition from the waveguide low pass to the 241 GHz Rectangular waveguide of the receiver
Optimization of the illumination of the parabolic mirror
Further attempts in cold, clear winter weather with little humidity.
For greater details on how they did this incredible feat take a look at the report and Google Translate is your friend!

Tasmania taps Telstra for new GRN
The Tasmanian Government has begun negotiations with Telstra over the building of a new Tasmanian Government Radio Network (TasGRN), which will modernise the state's emergency services and government agency communications.
The TasGRN will replace five existing, separate radio networks to create one unified, digital and interoperable Government Radio Network.
The network will initially be used by eight organisations: Tasmania Police; Tasmania Fire Service; Ambulance Tasmania; State Emergency Service; Sustainable Timber Tasmania; Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment; TasNetworks; and Hydro Tasmania.
“Recent events, both here and in other Australian jurisdictions, have shown us how important it is to have fast and secure communications to respond to bushfires, floods, natural disasters and other emergencies," said Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Management Mark Shelton.
"The new TasGRN will give our emergency services and key government agencies an integrated radio network that is purpose-built for the needs of Tasmania. This delivers on past review recommendations, including the 2013 Tasmanian Bushfires Inquiry into the Dunalley bushfires.
"The TasGRN project is expected to create up to 50 jobs during the three-year construction phase, with additional positions to help run and oversee the network once the network is up and running," the Minister added.
Telstra Enterprise Group Executive Michael Ebeid said the TasGRN would be the largest single project Telstra had ever carried out in Tasmania.
"This will be a brand new government public-safety-grade radio network that will be fit for purpose, meeting the demands of a modern Tasmania and the more than 10,000 employees and volunteers who'll use it," Ebeid said.
