Contest News
Summer VHF/UHF Field Days
This is to be on Saturday January 12th to Sunday 13th, starting at 0100 UTC on the Saturday and finishing at 0100 UTC on the Sunday.
The rules are now available on the WIA website under the tab: ‘For Members/Contests.
VK7 has the potential to make the best showing for quite awhile at this event. With the proliferation of stations turning up on 23cm, especially around Hobart, and the promise of several portable operations across the north, a healthy level of activity appears likely.
There have been recent Es and troppo openings interstate and beyond so it could be interesting.
As mentioned elsewhere in this bulletin some multi-operator participation from the NTARC clubrooms is planned for the Saturday afternoon.
To start the ball rolling its planned to coordinate proceedings on 146.5MHz FM simplex starting at 0100 UTC on the Saturday (not everyone has SSB) then QSY to 439.0MHz and from there other bands as available. The NTARC station, VK7TAZ, is expected to join in around 0200 UTC (3pm).
On the Sunday morning after the broadcast and callins it is planned to do a roundup of simplex stations on the above bands and more. There may not be as many stations gracing mountaintops at that time but home operation is quite acceptable; the more the merrier.
If youre like me and find the idea of submitting an electronic log daunting, dont worry, there is help available for converting a paper log.
What would benefit the state most of all would be for everyone who has a hand-held transceiver to go on the above simplex frequencies at the specified times, work as many stations as possible, even if there is only one, then even better, also submit a log.
A list of the rules is available on the WIA website http://www.wia.org.au/members/contests/vhfuhf/
Looking forward to hearing you on.
73, Peter, VK7PD and Rick, VK7RI

Ross Hull Contest and 23 CM QSO Party in January
For QSOs to be counted in the Ross Hull it is necessary to move off the calling frequency of 1296.1. So as to enable 23 cm QSO Party contacts to be counted for the Ross Hull the 23 cm QSO party will move up to 1296.16 FM during January. Digital Operations up to Launceston will continue on QRA64-C on 1296.2.
The QSO Party will start straight after the broadcast at around 10:00 am local each Sunday in January on 1296.16 and then beam to Launceston at 10:30 am Local. For those stations who have time please come up again on 1296.16 at 11:00 am for a second Ross Hull QSO as those QSO's can be counted again each UTC day.

New Year has been and gone for another year. We trust all celebrated in a safe way. All bar one of our holidaying family party was able to spend New Year's Eve on the boat on Raymond Island celebrating the New Year with a BBQ and many fine scotches, taking in the famous Paynesville New Years fireworks display in the process. Your reporter was left behind in the van to look after the dogs as the noise of the fireworks would have been too much for them. The youngest member of the crew didnt manage to see the New Year in but flaked out on her bunk. I am told that her twin sister and the older crew members partied well into the night and early hours of the morning.
This weeks segment is again being prepared in Newlands Arm, Victoria in the East Gippsland region, where we thought it had been very hot over the past week or so but we now know that was nothing. Today it reached 41C and it is looking like another hot one tomorrow.
2019 Membership fees – just a reminder that your 2018 membership expired on 31 December and if you hadnt renewed by that date, you are now listed on the membership register as an unfinancial member.
In case you have forgotten, NTARCs 2019 membership fees are just $30.00 for a Full voting member and $5 additional for each Family member that the voting member wishes to add to his or her primary membership.
As all listeners must be aware, the replacement of aging legacy equipment along with other ongoing care and maintenance of our repeater systems does not come cheap. For you to be able to continue to enjoy this aspect of your hobby and for NTARC to continue to provide this great network, we need your support now.
If you are not a member of NTARC please consider joining. If you have been a member in the past but have let that membership lapse for any reason, please consider rejoining. In either case, an application form can be found on our website www.ntarc.net or why not pop into the clubroom on a Monday or Friday, during coffee hours and collect an application. You will be made most welcome.
If club membership is not your cup of tea, we fully understand. In those circumstances, perhaps you might care to make a direct donation to our repeater fund, rather than pay a yearly subscription. If so, we would be happy to receive your contribution, either in person at a club meeting or coffee morning, or by post to PO BOX 275 Launceston 7250. Any donation will gladly be accepted. All donations will be officially receipted and noted accordingly against the repeater project.
WIA 2019 Callbook -With the announcement by the WIA of the availability of the 2019 callbook, NTARC will again be arranging bulk buys for members.
We received one order of Call Books on the Friday before Christmas and we will place another order once the WIA Office opens in late January. In the interim therefore, if you are interested in taking part in this purchase, could you please let the Treasurer André VK7ZAB know either at coffee on a Monday or Friday or email him at the following treasurer@ntarc.net so that we can gauge interest and order the appropriate number as soon as possible
The cost for the 2019 Call Book will be $35, the same as last year. This is still a significant saving on the cost of a WIA member ordering directly from the WIA Bookshop, once postage is added on and is significantly cheaper than the price available to non-WIA members.
Now on to Coming events
January meeting – your last reminder that our January meeting will be held next Saturday, 12 January. This month we will be having sandwich platters and cold chicken plus some salads instead of our normal BBQ. Cost will be $10.00 pp but this time the lunch will be organized by the Committee. Lunch will commence at noon and this will be followed by the January meeting at 14:00 hours (2.00pm). The meeting will be followed by a Show and Tell or an informal chat session, whichever suits you on the day. Donations of afternoon tea would still be appreciated.
Field Day
Peter VK7PD advises that after the January meeting on 12 January, it is planned to use the club station, VK7TAZ, to participate in the nation-wide Summer VHF/UHF Field Day. It is anticipated this exercise will be led by Larry, VK7WL, one of the club's experienced contest operators. The plan is to enter the multi-operator section, so all those interested are invited to hover around the radio room and take a turn. The club should be equipped to operate on at least 4 bands.
Members are also encouraged to bring hand-held radios programmed to transmit on 146.5 and 439.0MHz simplex then operate portable from the area and give contacts to a few who'll be scattered around nearby hilltops.
It will be really good to see VK7TAZ published among the contest results so why not give it a go?
Technical sessions –The first Technical session for 2019 will be Wednesday 6th February. Thats right, the Tech nights will be in recess throughout January. Come February 6th, it will all start again, with a meet time from 7.30 pm to 10.30 pm, at the Club room Archer Street, Rocherlea. Please also note that there will be no Technical session on Wednesday 13 February due to our AGM being held that evening.
I hope you can all survive a month without getting your weekly technical fix. Meanwhile, the recess might actually give you some time to get some progress in on your various projects. Imagine the impact you will make when you front up in February being able to demonstrate the huge strides you have made during the break.
February Annual General meeting – the Annual General Meeting of NTARC will take place on Wednesday 13 February 2019 at the NTARC Club Rooms, Rocherlea Scout Hall, Archer Street Rocherlea commencing at 19:30 hours (7.30 pm).
Business at the AGM will consist of confirmation of the Minutes of the 2018 AGM, then reception and consideration of reports from the Committee, including the Treasurers report and reports from our various managers and coordinators. This will be followed by the election of officer bearers and committee person for 2019. The meeting will then consider any item of special business for which the requisite notice has been received by the closing date.
All current office holder and committee positions fall vacant at the AGM. Nominations for each office bearer and the Committee member are invited and should be made in writing to the Secretary, along with the signatures of the Nominator, Seconder and that of the member nominated. Appointments will also be required to the positions of Internal Auditor and Public Officer.
Please note that for your convenience a nomination form will be available from the NTARC club room from Monday 7 January 2019, our first day of opening for the coming year.
Members are reminded that they will need to have paid their 2019 renewal subscription before the meeting commences at 19:30 hours (7.30 pm) to be able to vote at the Annual General meeting. Similarly, they will need to have paid their 2019 subscription before they can be nominated or nominate or second someone for office, as only financial members can exercise those privileges.
The AGM will be followed by the February General meeting.
Coffee mornings – are normally held every Monday and Friday in the NTARC Club rooms. Catch up time is from 10.00 am to noon. Our first session for 2019 will be tomorrow Monday 7 January we look forward to seeing you all.
Please remember that aside from the good company, freely offered philosophical views, maybe less than expert political analysis, tall tales and genuinely good fare on offer, these coffee events are normally a good opportunity to collect your QSL cards. Currently though we do not have any cards awaiting collection.
Please demonstrate your appreciation of all the effort that goes into operating the club and its facilities and other services we provide by joining us at these sessions, enjoying the company, coffee and the cake and leaving a gold coin or two, or even a small bank note, in the jar to assist in our on-going operations.
Finally
As always, I look forward to seeing you all at Rocherlea but not for another week. A reminder to all members that if you have any items of news you would like added to the weekly roundup, then please email me at the following address

Membership Update
Id like to thank all members who have paid so far along with their co-operation in filling out renewal forms. It has really made the process much easier. Over 75% of the membership have now renewed.
Membership for the 2018 year will expire on the 31st December and most notably for those who have not paid, this will mean no more access to the members only section of the website and you will no longer receive newsletters or other email correspondence.
This year the annual fee remains at $35 and, as always, funds the bulk of REAST's yearly operations. Current accepted forms of payment include Cash, Cheque or Direct Deposit. Credit card facilities are only available in person (i.e. with a card reader) but not online this year.
Please be aware that only members who pay before January 31st 2019 will be getting a member pack in 2019 which will include a member card and REAST sticker.

Experimenter's Night Wrap-Up
Standing room only at the Queens Domain clubroom last Wednesday night.
Hayden VK7HH, Richard VK7ZBX and Rex VK7MO were deep into a 2.4GHz power amplifier modification from VK6. They were deep into the insides of these professional amplifier units and doing the modifications. These unit can provide 65W output from about 5W input. There is some more work needed to realise the full 65W but progress has been made. Rex was also outlining his recent sun noise experiments.
Murray VK7ZMS and Jet soon to be VK7FJET were deep in conversation about the plans for the motorisation of the azimuth and elevation of the 1.8M 10GHz dish.
Ben VK7BEN and Justin VK7TW were working on the reprogramming of the ICOM T-90A triband handhelds.
Sean VK7FAZE was showing of the recent updates to his FT1000MP MKV with the replacement back lighting unit. Sean has also donated a very nice 19" rack and rack folding keyboard and LCD monitor unit for the DATV transmission rack which will have room for the IRLP Node.
Warren VK7WN and Sean were also looking into tutorials to learn Python on the net.
Justin bought along his recently made 1.296GHz vertical Collinear vertical antenna he used for the SOTA activation on Mt Wellington on Sunday. This is an 8 element 6dBd antenna housed in a PVC tube.
It was great to see Greg VK7FGPA back at the clubrooms after his recent heath issues. He is on the mend and we helped him with completing the membership renewal form. On ya Greg!
It was also great to see Tom VK7NTK again who was deep in conversation with Martin VK7MA.
We get back underway with another Experimenter's night this Wednesday night from 7:30pm in the Queens Domain Clubrooms.
See you then.

TECHNICAL
Tropospheric Ducting Event hits NBN Fixed Wireless Services
The NBN fixed Wireless Services in Northern Tasmania, South and East coast of Victoria suffered from a tropospheric ducting event in recent days and it is being handled as a major incident.
The interference ranges from the north coast of Tasmania to the south and south east of Victoria and if you take a look at the Hepburn Charts for the recent period you will see some interesting activity.
These services run on 2.3 and 3.4 GHz and can deliver up to a 50 Mbps service.
The NBN media release labelled the event as “thermal ducting” and has the possibility of affecting approximately 30,000 to 40,000 users. The disruption can be in the form of speed degradation, voice clipping, or potentially a complete loss of service.
