Happy New Year

Welcome to the very first edition of VK7 Amateur Radio News for 2026. We hope youâ€Öve all had a great start to the New Year and are ready for another year of activity, experimentation, and connection across the bands.

As the calendar turns to 2026, weâ€Öre looking ahead to a year full of discovery and shared experience in amateur radio. Whether youâ€Öre chasing DX, building and testing new projects, experimenting with digital modes, or just enjoying a good old-fashioned rag chew, thereâ€Ös plenty ahead for operators right across VK7 and beyond.

In todayâ€Ös broadcast, weâ€Öll bring you the latest news from around Tasmania and interstate, updates from across the bands, and a look at whatâ€Ös coming up in events, contests, and community activities. As always, VK7 Amateur Radio News is about keeping our community informed, connected, and inspired.

Before we get into the news, itâ€Ös important to acknowledge the team that makes this broadcast happen week in, week out. The VK7 Broadcast is very much a team effort, with nearly 25 volunteers contributing every Sunday, along with the Tuesday repeat broadcast.

A sincere thank you to our readers: Idris VK7ZIR, Nic VK7WW, Peter VK7PD, Justin VK7TW, and recently retired reader Fran VK7FRN.

Thanks also to Graham VK7GS for 160 metres, and our HF band operators on 80, 40, 20 and 10 metres: Ross VK7ALH, Garry VK7JGD, Dale VK7DG, and Tony VK7VKT.

On UHF and HF CB, thank you to Mark VK7FMAC and Stephen VK7SME.

Our digital modes team covering D-STAR on 91C and DMR on TG5 includes Clayton VK7ZCR, Ross VK7WP, Phil VK3PG, Alan VK1AO, and Gavin VK7HGO.

Northern TOT operations are supported by Peter VK7PD, Rick VK7HBR, and Andrew VKDW, with Stefan VK7ZSB keeping things running smoothly on the NTARC Discord.

For North-West DATV, thanks to Tony VK7AX, and to our callback operators Justin VK7TW, Harry VK7HXT, and Peter VK7PD.

Itâ€Ös a remarkable collective effort, and one that underpins the consistency and quality of this broadcast. If you get the chance, please pass on your thanks when you call in on the channel you listen to. A quick “thanks for the broadcast” goes a long way.

Now, grab your headphones, settle in, and letâ€Ös get 2026 underway with the sound of amateur radio. Youâ€Öre listening to VK7 Amateur Radio News.

Two Decades of VK7 History at Your Fingertips

Because not everyone can hover next to a radio at exactly the right moment each week.

If youâ€Öd like to read VK7 Amateur Radio News at your own pace, the full broadcast is available in text format via the vk7arnews groups.io group. Itâ€Ös ideal for catching up on items you missed, checking callsigns and frequencies, or quietly verifying that you really did hear that announcement correctly.

Subscribing is refreshingly low-tech. Just send an email to

vk7arnews+subscribe@groups.io and thatâ€Ös it. No forms, no algorithms, no interpretive dance!

One extra gem. The groups.io site hosts a complete archive of VK7 Amateur Radio News broadcasts going back to August 2004. Thatâ€Ös over two decades of VK7 amateur radio history, preserved and searchable. If you ever need to dig up a long-forgotten frequency, event, call sign, or half-remembered announcement, this is where it lives.

So if you like your amateur radio news searchable, archivable, and immune to fading, the vk7arnews groups.io group is very much your place.

WWFF, SOTA, POTA and IOTA
Weekly Wrap Up

I hope you all had a great Christmas and New Year, and that Santa was kind enough to deliver some new radio gear.

Operators have hit the ground running with activations for 2026!

Tony, VK7LTD, took full advantage of the 25/26 UTC changeover. Under SOTA rules, an operator may only claim points for a given summit once per calendar year, even though the summit itself can be activated multiple times. With the rollover from 2025 to 2026 in UTC, Tony was able to activate the summit just before the change and then again immediately after, with each activation counted as occurring in a separate calendar year and therefore eligible for points.

For the UTC change over, Tony made his way to the summit of Single Hill, near Seven Mile Beach. Tony logged 22 QSOs for the 2025 activation, followed by a further 12 QSOs for the 2026 activation, operating on both the 40 and 20 metre bands. Well done, Tony.

Ian, VK7IAN, was also active, heading out to the Truganini Conservation Area, a reference he has activated many times before. Ian operated on 40, 20, 15 and 10 metres, staying on the air until his battery was finally exhausted.

As this wrap up is being written, Jim, VK7JZ, is on the summit of Sandbanks Tier near Great Lake, calling CQ. His activation details will be included in next weekâ€Ös wrap up.

Hereâ€Ös to a great 2026, and I hope to catch you on the air.

Huge Thank You
VK7RST - GPS Locked Beacons Hosting

A huge thank you to Peter VK7TPE and Maureen Henry at Snug, who for over a decade have generously hosted the REAST GPS-locked 6m, 2m and 70cm digital beacons at their QTH.

Ten-plus years of uninterrupted hospitality, power, space, patience, and zero fuss is the kind of quiet contribution that makes the whole amateur radio ecosystem actually work.

These beacons donâ€Öt just magically exist. They exist because Peter and Maureen said “yes” and kept saying it, year after year.

Behind every beacon report or someone doing a frequency check on 6m, 2m or 70cm is someone like this doing the unglamorous, essential work.

REAST and the wider VK7 community owe them a genuine debt of gratitude. A huge thank you to Peter and Maureen.

73, REAST Committee

PS. Planning is underway to reinstall these beacons at the new site at Mt Nelson and we will be adding a 23cm beacon on 1296.470MHz.

Science News
Radiosynthesis - what the….?

Scientists have found an unexpected resident thriving amid one of Earthâ€Ös most radioactive environments: the ruins of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. A black fungus, Cladosporium sphaerospermum, has been discovered growing on the interior walls of the abandoned reactor structure, surviving and even appearing to do well in the presence of deadly ionising radiation that would normally destroy most life.

Researchers think the fungusâ€Ös dark pigment, melanin, might be the secret to this feat. Melanin can absorb radiation, and some scientists propose that C. sphaerospermum might be using that radiation in a process similar to how plants use sunlight in photosynthesis, a theoretical mechanism dubbed “radiosynthesis.” At this stage, radiosynthesis remains intriguing but unproven because no well-defined biochemical pathway has yet been confirmed.

The story of this fungus stretches back to surveys in the late 1990s that uncovered dozens of fungal species in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, most of them dark and rich in melanin. Subsequent studies, including ones that exposed the fungi to radiation on the International Space Station, show that they are resistant to ionising radiation and might even grow better under it. These findings have sparked ideas about using similar organisms as natural radiation shields for space missions or other extreme environments.

At the same time, scientists are cautious. They have not yet proven that the fungus actually converts radiation into usable metabolic energy, and the exact biological mechanisms behind its resilience and growth in high-radiation conditions are still being unravelled. What is clear is that this humble black fungus is doing something unusual with ionising radiation, reminding us that life can adapt in ways we do not fully understand.
