RAOTC News
Broadcast Reminder
This is a reminder about the RAOTC broadcast for the 2nd of November 2020; that’s tomorrow night for those listening on Sunday.
An item from the OTN archives recalls the world’s first ‘big’ radio broadcast; this took place in 1921 and was the ‘blow-by-blow’ description of a boxing match!
Not enough people had radio receivers to make it worthwhile so theatres were used over a wide area of the US. The means by which this was all executed makes fascinating listening.
Part 2 of ‘The Uncertain Future of Ham Radio’ considers how amateur radio has been a very social hobby for many. Changing living conditions have resulted in a shift to digital techniques even in the way ‘rag chewing’ is conducted. It is no longer essential to have an HF radio and antenna to partake of these pursuits. Technology such as the MFJ Rigpi server can enable an amateur to use someone else’s radio at a remote site.
Meanwhile amateur radio is said to be booming in countries like China, Thailand and Indonesia.
The advent of SDR has made complex electronic equipment more affordable.
As usual this will all go to air in VK7 on the first Monday of the month at 7:30pm local time over the VK7RAA/RTC state-wide network and again at about 8:30pm as a telecast on VK7AX ‘Spectrum Tasmania’ via the BATC members’ stream and in the Ulverstone area on 445.50MHz DATV.
The date this month is November 2nd. Call backs will follow on both networks. Please call in if you are able. Callback statistics are sent to RAOTC broadcast committee.
If you miss the off-air broadcasts you can listen to the audio file on the RAOTC website.

AR Magazine News
VK7 Column RIP
The latest Amateur Radio Magazine No.4 of 2020 is the last magazine to contain a VK7 State News Column due to a decision made by the Board and Editorial committee to discontinue state based news columns in the magazine.
VK7 lead the way as the first state based column to consolidate all the club news into one column even with the move to the National WIA in 2004.
It has been a privilege and a pleasure to raise the profile of VK7 nationally for the last 18 years through the VK7 Column starting in May 2003. This is just under 200 columns over that period of time.
Thanks for all the support from all those people who submitted stories and club news over the last 18 years.

QSL NEWS
Report - from Herman VK7HW Manager of the WIA VK7 Inwards QSL Bureau
The current list of Cards held as at 30 October 2020, is in the email version of the broadcast.
As a result of Covid-19, no further cards have been received since 16 July 2020. Some cards have already been mailed out and/or delivered on an opportunity basis, the most recent deliveries being at the 'Miena Muster' last weekend.
If you received your callsign in recent years and see it in the list would you please email Herman advising him of the date you acquired the Call as I do have some cards from years back and Herman is finding some of those operators are new as the original owner is no longer active or Silent Key. Herman thanks those who have already advised him of the various callsigns held since they obtained their licence.
If you have any questions re QSL cards, please contact Herman by email vk7bureau(at)wia.org.au

It‘s a bit frightening that we have reached the month of November and I am in no sense referring to Halloween. The past months have been to say the least, “interesting timesö in the manner of that old Chinese benediction. Still Christmas is looming up fast in just 8 weeks so hopefully the tide is slowly changing for us all.
We begin this week with an interesting item from NTARC member Andrew VK7DW in relation to the 2020 VKFF (VK Flora and Fauna) Team Championship, so will now hand over to him.
“James VK7JAM and Andrew VK7DW headed out to a local reserve to participate in the 2020 VKFF Team Championship as well as test some new equipment including some LiFePO4 batteries and a 4 band linked dipole antenna. After some arborist throw weight practice from James and the use of a 7 meter squid pole, the team managed to setup a couple of linked dipoles for HF and also two vertical antennas for UHF/VHF. Despite the gusty wind conditions, a great day was had and managed combined contacts on the 70CM, 2M, 6M, 20M, 40M and 80M bands including some DX late in the afternoon.
All the equipment worked well and we are looking forward to the 2020 VKFF Activation Weekend coming up on the weekend of 28/29 November.
73, Andrew and Jamesö.
Thanks Andrew, sounds like you and James had a fun time. We look forward to hearing how you go in the 28 – 29 November weekend event.
We hand over to Nic VK7WW for the “Technet session held last Wednesday 28th October
“Much less activity on both nets this week.
The TestNet at 7 pm local time on 3.580 MHz
Only Alan VK7AT called in on the TestNet. So Nic VK7WW gave out a CQ in very slow CW less than 5 words per minute for any listeners to practice their CW.
However, he was surprised when Paul ZL1PC came for a CW QSO from Whangarei in New Zealand.
BAND CONDITIONS - GOOD but seemed to have a higher than usual static noise level.
The TechNet at 7:30 pm (local time) on 3.567 MHz
A total of 6 stations joined the TechNet hosted by Nic VK7WW under the Club callsign VK7TAZ.
VK7AT Alan spoke about the earthing for his long wire.
VK7ALH Ross continues with repairs, and found an old army TRF set from the 1920s.
VK7ZPD Phil on receiving aircraft radar transmissions on his SDR thumb drive, Phil also streamed the nets audio on Discord. Thanks Phil.
VK7DW Andrew spoke about his home brew satellite tracking system, and how he was contacted by an amateur in the Canary Islands who was having problems in building a similar system.
VK7BR Bunny Rabbits Bernie struggled to be heard on his first call in, but made some adjustments and his signal came up from barely readable to plus thirty over nine.
Discord had several members logged-in with a range of comments, signal reports and photos.
73 VK7WWö
Thankyou Nic, I am sure all will be looking forward to next week for the informal no Technet session.
2021 Membership fees – yes with the year rapidly disappearing it is time to start reminding all that your 2020 Membership fee expires on 31 December. Due to COVID-19 and limited access to club events this year the Committee is of the view that the 2021 Membership fee should remain at $35.00 for a Full Voting member and $5.00 for family members. In the normal course of events, it would have made this recommendation to a general meeting but as we all know, it has not been possible to hold any general meetings for many months, so we have been unable to follow that practice. Fortunately, the club Rules overcome this dilemma. They require that the fee for the coming year remains at the previous year’s level unless amended by a general meeting before that year’s end.
We can therefore advise that the 2021 fee will remain at $35 for each voting member with an additional $5 for each member of the family that the voting member wishes to add to his or her membership.
A letter advising of the fee payable will be forwarded to all members in early December to the email address noted on our records.
Future events
Fortnightly Tech Night – Wednesday 4th November at the NTARC Club rooms 19:30 hours until whenever. Continuous tea and coffee, although a gold coin donation for the evening would be appreciated. The Discord on-line session that normally accompanies the TechNet 80 meter event will also be alive, Murphy permitting, to allow members who cannot be present in person to continue their participation via that medium.
Fortnightly TechNet – Wednesday 11th November. Nic VK7WW will once again be in the chair hosting a “TestNetö on 3.580 MHz at 19:00 local time, with the TechNet for NTARC following on 3.567 MHz at 19:30 local time. Paul VK7KPA will be hosting the accompanying Discord session on the net.
Equine Endurance event – North East Equine Endurance Club and Cradle Coast Endurance Riders will be jointly conducting the State Championships at Santarena Park, Scottsdale over the 20th and 21st November. Rides over the days will be a 160km elevated, 95km elevated, 40km and a 15km events. The 160km ride will be a 24 hour ride.
We will need additional crew members to handle this event. Please advise if you are able to assist by emailing Norm VK7KTN at safetycomms.ntarc @ gmail.com or catch up with him at a coffee session.
Coffee mornings – currently every Friday in the NTARC Club rooms. Catch up time is from 10.00 am to noon and we look forward to seeing you all.
Please remember that aside from the good company, freely offered philosophical views, maybe less than expert political analysis, tall tales, funny stories and genuinely good fare on offer, these coffee events in the past have been normally a good opportunity to collect your QSL cards. Currently we have a few cards awaiting collection from past deliveries.
As I remind all each week, please demonstrate your appreciation of all the effort that goes into operating the club, its facilities and the other services we provide, especially in these abnormal and very trying times, enjoying the company, coffee, biscuits and cake and leaving a gold coin or two, or even a small bank note, in the jar to assist in our on-going operations.
Once again though, this must be all from NTARC for this week. Please bear with us as we attempt to bring club life back to normal, while balancing the need for continuing caution and with all complying with the social distancing requirements.
Finally
A reminder to all members that if you have any items of news you would like added to our weekly roundup, no matter how trivial then please email me at the following address ntarc.emails @ gmail.com. Please note that it would be appreciated if any items for the weekly news could be sent in Times New Roman, 12 pt Font format.
For some time to come, with the exception of the occasional club emailed newsletter, the weekly broadcast news segment will continue as the medium for informing all about happenings, or lack thereof, in the local amateur radio world. It would be appreciated if any news, no matter how insignificant, could be sent no later than 17:00 hours on the Friday prior to broadcast, to allow its timely insertion into the NTARC segment.
That gives all a chance to get the NTARC segment together and off to Hobart in time for collation into the VK7 Broadcast. Your continued cooperation in this regard will be gratefully appreciated.
We will bring you all such contributions next Sunday morning.
73, Yvonne VK7FYMX, Secretary NTARC Inc

REAST November Presentation Night
Save the date - Wednesday 25 November will be a fascinating presentation by new REAST member Graeme Wilson VK7RE titled "The Four Sides of a Triangle."
The basis of the presentation is that Graeme worked for a company as a Drive Trial Technician and drove 521,000 km in 6 and a half years around Australia checking mobile phone coverage.
Because there was no "book" on how to do this, Graeme had to figure out what he called "Efficient Driving" and he became pretty good at it!
This will take place in the Queen's Domain clubrooms from 7:30pm on 25th November 2020.
We will be streaming the session and will be transmitting on RF - DVB-T 445.5MHz Standard Definition 7MHz BW from the Queens Domain.
See you there

DATV Experimenter's Night
Last Wednesday night we covered iPhone 12, Optical Communications and, EFHW.
We started the DATV Experimenter's Night with Ben VK7TW taking the audience through the iPhone 12 features including the incredible camera system and low light capability. There is even a Lidar built-in that can scan the environment for 3D visual effects. It is 5G enabled and Ben is getting 305 Mbps downloads. Ben showed some examples of low light and multi image flow photos involving water. We look forward to some get results from this latest technology from Apple, thanks Ben.
Rex VK7MO and Larry VK7WLH then took the audience through their latest optical experimentation with Richard VK7ZBX. This included a comparison between the luxeon, rebel and phlatlight LEDs and their relative efficiency factors. Rex and Larry then moved to the new technology available in silicon photo multipliers used for distance Lidar applications and these look promising and cheaper than the current avalanche photo diodes. We showed the phlatlights and original luxeon LEDs with accompanying lenses. Thanks to Rex and Larry.
Justin VK7TW then went into his experimentation with adding a 0.05 wavelength counterpoise to the End Fed Half Wave VK7BEN antenna and how it stabilised everything for more consistent results. Justin then took the audience through what difference a sloper versus inverted V configuration made. This was overlayed with the effect that the variable capacitor has on the 15 & 10m end of the resonances.
Our videos for the night included Nev's Servo, Ham Radio 2.0 and VK3YE hard rubbish collection finds.
The night was recorded and is available on the REAST YouTube Channel at the link on the email edition of the broadcast.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3UCFcw3b5pQ
This Wednesday night will be a DATV Experimenter's Night as our Presentation night has moved to 25th November. We will be having a studio maintenance night as we have some new equipment to install and some tidying up to do in the studio. So, come up have a coffee and a chat and maybe help us out with some studio reno!
We won't be streaming or going out on RF with the Reno.....HIHI!
See you Wednesday night from 7:30pm.
73, Justin, VK7TW
