Silent Key
David Ronald Wilson VK3JKY

I am sad to report that Dave VK3JKY, husband of Chloe VK3KMB, passed away on the morning of 5th November, in Victoria.

David will be remembered by many VK7’s from his and Chloe’s frequent visits to Tasmania. Chloe is a Tasmanian by birth.

David did his army training in signals in Tasmania, with his life long friend Bob VK7KZ.

Both he and Chloe became qualified pilots and flew out of Tyabb across Australia.

In recent times he and Chloe, in their retirement, relocated to Stratford and renovated a home and set up antennas.

Many will remember him through he and Chloe’s business, TTS Systems. Which sold Amateur Radio gear across Australia.

From the early days of the Ham Fest at Miena, they were great supporters of our event, and at days end would return to Penstock Lagoon with many of their Tasmanian friends.

It is fair to say that David loved a beer and well into the night, after another successful Ham Fest he would celebrate, along with the other members of the Central Highlands Amateur Radio Club, amongst the gum trees on the shores of Penstock Lagoon.

David was a great lover of dogs and would always have one or two of his beloved pooches in tow when travelling. His latest dog Rusty his constant companion.

Chloe and David loved the Dargo High Plains and in their retirement, spent many happy days in their newly built shack, socialising and talking to their friends on radio.

David is survived by his wife of 50 years, Chloe, their daughter Mandy, their grandchildren Taylor, Joshua and Darcy, and Rusty their dog.

Vale David VK3JKY.

AR Magazine News
VK7 Column RIP

The latest Amateur Radio Magazine No.4 of 2020 is the last magazine to contain a VK7 State News Column due to a decision made by the Board and Editorial committee to discontinue state based news columns in the magazine.

VK7 lead the way as the first state based column to consolidate all the club news into one column even with the move to the National WIA in 2004.

It has been a privilege and a pleasure to raise the profile of VK7 nationally for the last 18 years through the VK7 Column starting in May 2003. This is just under 200 columns over that period of time.

Thanks for all the support from all those people who submitted stories and club news over the last 18 years.

Report - from Herman VK7HW Manager of the WIA VK7 Inwards QSL Bureau

The current list of Cards held as at 30 October 2020, is in the email version of the broadcast.

As a result of Covid-19, no further cards have been received since 16 July 2020. Some cards have already been mailed out and/or delivered on an opportunity basis, the most recent deliveries being at the 'Miena Muster' last weekend.

If you received your callsign in recent years and see it in the list would you please email Herman advising him of the date you acquired the Call as I do have some cards from years back and Herman is finding some of those operators are new as the original owner is no longer active or Silent Key. Herman thanks those who have already advised him of the various callsigns held since they obtained their licence.

News from the northwest
N.W. Tassie 2m DX Net

In early October, 2020, we commenced a weekly net in the North West, known as the N.W. Tassie 2m DX Net. The net is aimed at encouraging more activity on the 2m band from N.W. VK7 and to encourage stations located interstate to listen for Tasmania on the band. The net controllers are located in the Burnie area and listen using both vertical and horizontal polarization. Our first two nets in October, resulted in contacts made into VK3 and we were delighted.

The net is held every Thursday commencing at 09:00 UTC (20:00 local) on 146.550 FM. We then QSY at 09:30 UTC (20:30 local) to 144.120 USB.

We also have a Facebook group which can be found by searching the name of the net on Facebook.

Chat and Show to Regroup and we have Moved

If we do not have any further issues with COVID before this date, and regulations stay as they are we will be having a gathering for the group on November 7th at 2pm.

Please note the new location is Ulverstone.

Our new location is in the Recreation Centre in West Ulverstone. It is in Flora Street alongside the river. Drive into the car park closes to the river and find the veranda with Ulverstone Show Society Office on it, enter that door and go to the end of the hall through the next door and you are there.

Please expect to follow all directions for COVID control such as sanitizing, distancing, and sneeze and cough control. Please, if unwell stay at home!

Hope to see you all there,

Shirl VK7HSC, Group Organizer

NWTR&TV Group
Meetings to resume.

It is planned to have the first post-COVID meeting of the club on December 5th at the Scout Hall in Ulverstone which is our usual location, unless restrictions get reintroduced by a worsening situation in our state.

Meeting will start at 2PM and will be followed by afternoon tea and a cuppa. I am supplying disposable cups and I suggest instead of cooking, to buy a packet of biscuits or some small cakes as I think it was recommended to go through official sources that have COVID production regulations to follow, so as a precaution it would be appreciated, and any contribution for a snack also welcome.

We the committee strongly request the practice of all COVID government rules and requirements and wish our members to do the same, and if you have any signs of being unwell please do not attend but follow member email messages that will give notification of club progress.

As always visitors are welcome for the meeting and the following chatter that usually happens.

Looking forward to seeing everyone.

Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club Incorporated

www.ntarc.net

We commence this week with a report from President Idris VK7ZIR on the happenings of Tech Night held Wednesday 4th November.

“No heater needed tonight, it was a very pleasant evening and brought a pleasing number of attendees to the session. Discord was running for those unable to attend and coincided with Nic VK7WW’s Informal 80m Net which commenced at 19:00 local.

Ross VK7ALH came in with a vintage Yaesu FL-50 Single Side Bander transmitter. A very tidy unit cosmetically, and once the covers were off, showed all internal components in good order. As per usual, Ross is wanting to complete the set with the receiver and VFO. Nicely presented thanks Ross.

We are fortunate to have for a time a Marconi/Edison Terahertz Communicator aka Optical Transceiver which works very well. It is extreme home brew, decorated in khaki drab and looking like a possum trap! Has to be seen to be believed. Pointed at a reflective surface, a voice modulated optical signal was detected and reproduced. Fresnel lenses, probably salvaged from old overhead projectors, were employed in both optical paths and the transmitter utilises a red LED as the active element. This magnificent piece of equipment was loaned to us by Ken VK7DY at the Miena QSO Muster. Thanks Ken for a most interesting artefact, we will be conducting further experiments at the next Technical session. It is hoped we might be able to find a similar unit which was constructed local to establish a proper optical link.

Another interesting exhibit came from Tony VK7ZTT who needed assistance to bring in a complete Rhode and Schwartz signal generator, early 1960’s vintage. This has a frequency range of 170 to 900 MHz and was in service for many years as the primary signal source at a local communications installation. It could be unkindly described as a boat anchor, with boat attached judging by the weight, but the precision of construction could be felt in the silky smooth controls, still with no play in their bearings. Thanks to Tony for this piece of communications history which will now reside at the Clubrooms.

As usual, photos of the happy throng having many discussions around the tables were uploaded to Discord for the edification of those non-attendees. Thanks to Bernie VK7BR for the catering.

Until next time, 73, Idris VK7ZIRö

Thanks Idris. We now follow up that report with a rundown of the Informal Technet from Nic VK7WW,

“The TestNet on 3.580 at 7pm local time attracted two stations

• Graham, VK7KT from Burnie and Paul VK7KPA.

An informal TechNet followed at 7:30pm local time on 3.567 with 6 stations:

• Nic, VK7WW as net controller, had modified two Codan ATUs adding an SWR capability.

• Alvin, VK7ADQ/P2 was initially Strength 4 to 5, but 30 minutes later was S9+10db as conditions had improved.

• Phil, VK7ZPD is still developing a ‘monitoring aircraft radar system’.

• Paul, VK7KPA is quieting his solar inverter to reduce local noise.

• Bob, VK7ZRF called in from St Helens – welcome Bob! and

• Keith, VK3MKE from Ferntree Gully was using an FT101D with modified finals, using a pair of 6146 instead of the 6SJ6s - and very good audio.

Interesting discussions on Discord (thanks Paul VK7KPA for hosting) with photos:

Alan VK7AN added a speech processor to his FT818 and it has made a big difference to his signal...2 S points fantastic!

Nic VK7WW posted pics of the modified Codan AMUs.

Phil VK7ZPD posted location plots of terrain between stations using Google Earth; and, aircraft plots and antenna details.

Peter VK7KPC added an antenna data plot from his Rig Expert analyser...and Idris as VK7TAZ posted three great pics of what was happening at the Clubrooms, including a Marconi/Edison Terahertz communicator machine!

Thank you to everyone who took part in the informal nets - that also includes Short Wave Listeners, those Radio Amateurs who also listen in, but can’t transmit; and those who listen to the net on SDRs via the Internet, wherever you may be!

Look forward to catching up next week for the formal nets!

This is Nic VK7 Whisky Whisky, now Signing Clear.ö

2021 Membership fees – yes with the year rapidly disappearing it is time to start reminding all that your 2020 Membership fee expires on 31 December. Due to COVID-19 and limited access to club events this year the Committee is of the view that the 2021 Membership fee should remain at $35.00 for a Full Voting member and $5.00 for family members. In the normal course of events, it would have made this recommendation to the general meeting normally held in November but as we all know, it has not been possible to hold any general meetings for many months, so we have been unable to follow that practice. Fortunately, the club Rules overcome this dilemma. They require that the fee for the coming year remains at the previous year’s level unless amended by a general meeting before that year’s end.

We can therefore advise that the 2021 fee will remain at $35 for each voting member with an additional $5 for each member of the family that the voting member wishes to add to his or her membership.

A letter advising of the fee payable will be forwarded to all members in early December to the email address noted on our records.
Future events

Fortnightly TechNet – Wednesday 11th November. Nic VK7WW will once again be in the chair hosting a “TestNetö on 3.580 MHz at 19:00 local time, with the TechNet for NTARC following on 3.567 MHz at 19:30 local time. Paul VK7KPA will be hosting the accompanying Discord session on the net.

Fortnightly Tech Night – Wednesday 18th November at the NTARC Club rooms 19:30 hours until whenever. Continuous tea and coffee, although a gold coin donation for the evening would be appreciated. The Discord on-line session that normally accompanies the TechNet 80 meter event will also be alive, Murphy permitting, to allow members who cannot be present in person to continue their participation via that medium.

Equine Endurance event – North East Equine Endurance Club and Cradle Coast Endurance Riders will be jointly conducting the State Championships at Santarena Park, Scottsdale over the 20th and 21st November. Rides over the days will be a 160km elevated, 95km elevated, 40km and a 15km events. The 160km ride will be a 24 hour ride.

We will need additional crew members to handle this event. Please advise if you are able to assist by emailing Norm VK7KTN at safetycomms.ntarc @ gmail.com or catch up with him at a coffee session.

December General Meeting –We can finally announce our first general meeting since that held way back in March. This will take place in the clubrooms on Saturday 5th December at 2.00 pm. Please note that this meeting will break the normal regular pattern of meetings occurring in the second week of the month but given the rapid approach of Christmas and the relatively short notice, the committee felt it best to hold the meeting as early in December as we could, while hopefully avoiding too many clashes with other events in that crowded month.

We don’t expect the agenda to be overly complex, notwithstanding the passage of many months since we last met in formal session, so I think we can anticipate an early afternoon tea, probably with a decidedly Christmas celebrative and annual break-up flavour. Please note this significant event in your diary, on your calendar, by tying knots in your handkerchief or whatever aide-memoire you choose to employ. Please bring along a plate of suitable festive goodies if you are so able.

Coffee mornings – currently every Friday in the NTARC Club rooms. Catch up time is from 10.00 am to noon and we look forward to seeing you all.

Please remember that aside from the good company, freely offered philosophical views, maybe less than expert political analysis, tall tales, funny stories and genuinely good fare on offer, these coffee events in the past have been normally a good opportunity to collect your QSL cards. Currently we have a few cards awaiting collection from past deliveries.

As I remind all each week, please demonstrate your appreciation of all the effort that goes into operating the club, its facilities and the other services we provide, especially in these abnormal and very trying times, enjoying the company, coffee, biscuits and cake and leaving a gold coin or two, or even a small bank note, in the jar to assist in our on-going operations.

Once again though, this must be all from NTARC for this week. Please come along to the December General Meeting, so we can really celebrate bringing club life back to normal, while still balancing the need for continuing caution and with all complying with the social distancing requirements.
Finally

A reminder to all members that if you have any items of news you would like added to our weekly roundup, no matter how trivial then please email me at the following address ntarc.emails @ gmail.com Please note that it would be appreciated if any items for the weekly news could be sent in Times New Roman, 12 pt Font format.

It would be appreciated if any news, no matter how insignificant, could be sent no later than 17:00 hours on the Friday prior to broadcast, to allow its timely insertion into the NTARC segment.

That gives all a chance to get the NTARC segment together and off to Hobart in time for collation into the VK7 Broadcast. Your continued cooperation in this regard will be gratefully appreciated.

We will bring you all such contributions next Sunday morning.

REAST has recently upgraded the old fluorescent lighting in the clubrooms, operating room and DATV Studio to LED panel lighting.

This will further reduce the power bill and now provides uniform bright lighting throughout the facility.

Thanks to all involved in the installation.

REAST November Presentation Night

Wednesday 25 November will be a fascinating presentation by new REAST member Graeme Wilson VK7RE titled "The Four Sides of a Triangle."

The basis of the presentation is that Graeme worked for a company as a Drive Trial Technician and drove 521,000 km in 6 and a half years around Australia checking mobile phone coverage.

Because there was no "book" on how to do this, Graeme had to figure out what he called "Efficient Driving" and he became pretty good at it!

This will take place in the Queen's Domain clubrooms from 7:30pm on 25th November 2020.

We will be streaming the session and will be transmitting on RF - DVB-T 445.5MHz Standard Definition 7MHz BW from the Queens Domain.

See you there

---------------------------------

DATV Experimenter's Night

Last Wednesday night was a maintenance night in the DATV Studio with replacement of the audio mixer and re-routing and tidy-up of cables in the main video and audio rack.

This was successfully completed and we hope this improves the audio levels and quality in future programs.

This Wednesday night is our regular Working from the Shack interview with an amateur and this week it is an interview with Justin VK7TW. This interview will be led by Warren VK7WN and will take place in the DATV Studio. The night will be streamed and recorded and will be available on the REAST YouTube Channel.

So, why not come up to the Queens Domain COVID-safe clubrooms and see what we get up to. If it is too cold to make it up to the Domain why not take a look on RF or the YouTube Streaming channel and we will be taking questions via Repeater Two (146.700), DMR Talk Group 3807 and the YouTube Chat channel.

And a reminder that we go out on RF on 445.5MHz DVB-T 7MHz Standard Definition. So, if you have a TV, Set-top box or USB DTV Dongle that you can tune and scan 445.5MHz and you can see the Queens Domain, then you have a good chance of receiving the DATV Experimenter's Night Signal.

Look out for VK7OTC. We also stream the nights on the REAST YouTube channel.
