QSL NEWS
Report - from Herman VK7HW Manager of the WIA VK7 Inwards QSL Bureau
The current list of Cards held as at 30 October 2020, is in the email version of the broadcast.
As a result of Covid-19, no further cards have been received since 16 July 2020. Some cards have already been mailed out and/or delivered on an opportunity basis, the most recent deliveries being at the 'Miena Muster'.
If you received your callsign in recent years and see it in the list would you please email Herman advising him of the date you acquired the Call as I do have some cards from years back and Herman is finding some of those operators are new as the original owner is no longer active or Silent Key. Herman thanks those who have already advised him of the various callsigns held since they obtained their licence.
If you have any questions re QSL cards, please contact Herman by email vk7bureau(at)wia.org.au

News from the northwest
N.W. Tassie 2m DX Net
In early October, 2020, we commenced a weekly net in the North West, known as the N.W. Tassie 2m DX Net. The net is aimed at encouraging more activity on the 2m band from N.W. VK7 and to encourage stations located interstate to listen for Tasmania on the band. The net controllers are located in the Burnie area and listen using both vertical and horizontal polarization. Our first two nets in October, resulted in contacts made into VK3 and we were delighted.
The net is held every Thursday commencing at 09:00 UTC (20:00 local) on 146.550 FM. We then QSY at 09:30 UTC (20:30 local) to 144.120 USB.
We also have a Facebook group which can be found by searching the name of the net on Facebook.

Please do not hesitate to Jon VK7JON for further information on 0497 610 498.

NW Tassie Amateur Repeater Group Net
North West Amateurs have indicated they would like a local repeater net
So, on Wednesday nights at 2000hrs local, the NW Tassie Amateur Repeater Group, will conduct a net on VK7RMD 146.625, 141.3 tone.
This repeater is located on Mt Duncan behind Penguin and the repeater has a large coverage area from Smithton to Launceston and into the back country.
We want it to be informal, but run by a net controller, so everyone can get a spot to chat about what they are up to, projects they are working on, ideas, propagation, anything radio and electronic related and we will be staying away from politics, religion and all the other no nos.
This is totally independent of any clubs and organisation, and its aim is to foster relations between amateurs, and keep the PAs in the radios used and warm.
Anyone who can hear the net is welcome to join in

Meetings to resume.
It is planned to have the first post-COVID meeting of the club on December 5th at the Scout Hall in Ulverstone which is our usual location, unless restrictions get reintroduced by a worsening situation in our state.
Meeting will start at 2PM and will be followed by afternoon tea and a cuppa. I am supplying disposable cups and I suggest instead of cooking, to buy a packet of biscuits or some small cakes as I think it was recommended to go through official sources that have COVID production regulations to follow, so as a precaution it would be appreciated, and any contribution for a snack also welcome.
We the committee strongly request the practice of all COVID government rules and requirements and wish our members to do the same, and if you have any signs of being unwell please do not attend but follow member email messages that will give notification of club progress.
As always visitors are welcome for the meeting and the following chatter that usually happens.
Looking forward to seeing everyone.

Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club Incorporated
www.ntarc.net
We commence this week with a report from our TechNet Coordinator Nic VK7WW, on the event held on Wednesday 11th November.
“The TestNet on 3580 at 7pm local time attracted two stations;
• VK7AT Alan; and Terry VK3AG, near Moe.
Conditions always improve as we go from daylight to darkness! Though storm activity with lightning strikes was certainly making its presence felt.
The TechNet followed at 7:30pm local time on 3.567 with 7 stations:
• Nic, VK7WW as net controller, is refurbishing a 1957 Heathkit DX40 for AM on 7.125 MHz
• Alan, VK7AT is working on improving his CW decoder
• Phil, VK7ZPD discussed issues with servers, hotspots and his DMR
• Andrew, VK7DW has been trying meteor scatter on 6m using MSK144
• Peter, VK7PD discovered issues with his audio switching
• Paul, VK7KPA continues with quieting his solar invertor; and
• Robert, VK2CAB explained how he used LDF450 to feed his antenna.
Interesting discussions on Discord (thanks Paul VK7KPA for hosting) with photos of:
• the current storm and rainfall map of Bass Strait;
• quickly followed by a lightning strike map;
• a poppy and Morse Key for Remembrance Day; and
• a home/brew RF Amplifier with a pair of 813s for 40m AM.
Thank you to everyone who took part in the nets - that also includes Short Wave Listeners, those Radio Amateurs who also listen in, but can’t transmit; and those who listen to the net on SDRs via the Internet, wherever you may be!
This is Nic VK7 Whisky Whisky, now Signing Clear.ö
We thank Nic for his ongoing efforts each week and for these reports for the weekly broadcast.
2021 Membership fees – yes with the year rapidly disappearing it is time to start reminding all that your 2020 Membership fee expires on 31 December. Due to COVID-19 and limited access to club events this year, the Committee was of the view that the 2021 Membership fee should remain at $35.00 for a Full Voting member and $5.00 for family members. In the normal course of events, it would have made this recommendation to the general meeting normally held in November but as we all know, it has not been possible to hold any general meetings for many months, so we have been unable to follow that practice. Fortunately, the club Rules overcome this dilemma. They require that the fee for the coming year remains at the previous year’s level unless amended by a general meeting before that year’s end.
We can therefore confirm that the 2021 fee will remain at $35 for each voting member with an additional $5 for each member of the family that the voting member wishes to add to his or her membership.
A letter advising of the fee payable will be forwarded to all members in early December to the email address noted on our records.
Future events
Fortnightly Tech Night – Wednesday 18th November at the NTARC Club rooms 19:30 hours until whenever. Continuous tea and coffee, although a gold coin donation for the evening would be appreciated. The Discord on-line session that normally accompanies the TechNet 80 meter event will also be alive, Murphy permitting, to allow members who cannot be present in person to continue their participation via that medium.
Equine Endurance event – The North East Equine Endurance Club and Cradle Coast Endurance Riders will be jointly conducting the State Championships at Santarena Park, Scottsdale over the 20th and 21st November. Rides over the days will be a 160km elevated, 95km elevated, 40km and a 15km events. The 160km ride will be a 24 hour ride and will commence 00:00 hours, i.e. midnight Friday 20 November. The 95km will commence at 06:00 hours Saturday 21 November and the 40km will follow at 08:00 hours and hot on their heels at 09:00 hours will be the 15km event.
This event requires four checkpoints they being Waterhouse Road and Rex’s Race along with Rodeo Road Crossroads and Grahams Corner.
In addition to the checkpoints, we obviously also need to keep Base manned throughout. This will be a very busy event so we will need additional crew members to handle the load. Please advise if you are able to assist by emailing Norm VK7KTN at safetycomms.ntarc@gmail.com or catch up with him at a coffee session.
Fortnightly TechNet – Wednesday 25th November. Nic VK7WW will once again be in the chair hosting a “TestNetö on 3.580 MHz at 19:00 local time, with the TechNet for NTARC following on 3.567 MHz at 19:30 local time. Paul VK7KPA will be hosting the accompanying Discord session on the net.
December General Meeting –We can finally announce our first general meeting since that held way back in March. This will take place in the clubrooms on Saturday 5th December at 2.00 pm. Please note that this meeting will break the normal regular pattern of meetings occurring in the second week of the month but given the rapid approach of Christmas and the relatively short notice, the committee felt it best to hold the meeting as early in December as we could, while hopefully avoiding too many clashes with other events in that crowded month.
We don’t expect the agenda to be overly complex, notwithstanding the passage of many months since we last met in formal session, so I think we can anticipate an early afternoon tea, probably with a decidedly Christmas celebrative and annual break-up flavour. Please note this significant event in your diary, on your calendar, by tying knots in your handkerchief or whatever aide-memoire you choose to employ. Please bring along a plate of suitable festive goodies if you are so able.
Coffee mornings – currently every Friday in the NTARC Club rooms. Catch up time is from 10.00 am to noon and we look forward to seeing you all.
Please remember that aside from the good company, freely offered philosophical views, maybe less than expert political analysis, tall tales, funny stories and genuinely good fare on offer, these coffee events in the past have been normally a good opportunity to collect your QSL cards. Currently we have a few cards awaiting collection from past deliveries.
As I remind all each week, please demonstrate your appreciation of all the effort that goes into operating the club, its facilities and the other services we provide, especially in these abnormal and very trying times, enjoying the company, coffee, biscuits and cake and leaving a gold coin or two, or even a small bank note, in the jar to assist in our on-going operations.
Once again though, this must be all from NTARC for this week. Please come along to the December General Meeting, so we can really celebrate bringing club life back to normal, while still balancing the need for continuing caution and with all complying with the social distancing requirements.
Finally
A reminder to all members that if you have any items of news you would like added to our weekly roundup, no matter how trivial then please email me at the following address ntarc.emails @ gmail.com Please note that it would be appreciated if any items for the weekly news could be sent in Times New Roman, 12 pt Font format.
It would be appreciated if any news, no matter how insignificant, could be sent no later than 17:00 hours on the Friday prior to broadcast, to allow its timely insertion into the NTARC segment.
That gives all a chance to get the NTARC segment together and off to Hobart in time for collation into the VK7 Broadcast. Your continued cooperation in this regard will be gratefully appreciated.
We will bring you all such contributions next Sunday morning.
73, Yvonne VK7FYMX, Secretary NTARC Inc

REAST November Presentation Night
Wednesday 25 November will be a fascinating presentation by new REAST member Graeme Wilson VK7RE titled "The Four Sides of a Triangle."
The basis of the presentation is that Graeme worked for a company as a Drive Trial Technician and drove 521,000 km in 6 and a half years around Australia checking mobile phone coverage.
Because there was no "book" on how to do this, Graeme had to figure out what he called "Efficient Driving" and he became pretty good at it!
This will take place in the Queen's Domain clubrooms from 7:30pm on 25th November 2020.
We will be streaming the session and will be transmitting on RF - DVB-T 445.5MHz Standard Definition 7MHz BW from the Queens Domain.
See you there

DATV Experimenter's Night -Working from the Shack Interview
Anchor for the night, Warren VK7WN welcomed our audience to the DATV Experimenter's Night and introduced Justin VK7TW who I was the subject of the sixteenth Working from the Shack interview.
Justin went into growing up in Adelaide and his family then went into his education and working history starting at a company called Microbyte which manufactured typewriter interfaces and PCs. Justin then headed back to school and went off the University, got married and came to Tassie.
On the amateur radio front Justin's interest started whilst working in Adelaide and Justin studied with Geoff Taylor VK5TY and on the train to/from work with Ian Ridpath's study guide and got his z-call in 1986 as VK5ZJV. In Adelaide Justin played with packet radio and built a Dick Smith Commander 2m radio along with his OM Wally VK5TW.
Wally was his biggest inspiration and Justin outlined how and when his dad got into amateur radio back in 1957. Justin amateur radio inspirations also included Geoff Taylor VK5TY SK, Richard Rogers VK7RO, Rex Moncur VK7MO and Neil Sandford SK.
Justin outlined some of his amateur radio interests in satellites, packet radio, 630m, weak signal digital models, microwaves, DMR/DSTAR, SDRs and SOTA to name a few.
Some of Justin's other interests outside of amateur radio include A cappella Gospel singing, geocaching and bushwalking.
Justin then showed a virtual tour of his shack and the projects on the bench in the shack.
Thanks to Warren VK7WN and Justin VK7TW for sharing his life and passion for amateur radio.
The video of the night is available on the REAST Youtube channel and apologies for the slight hot audio due to still learning to drive the new audio mixer!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bL_oSAOTVGo
We get back underway with our DATV Experimenter’s Night this Wednesday night with more on the EFHW antenna experiments, Arduino RS485 Controlled PTZ Cameras, Optical Comms Updates, Club Power Supply project update and much more.
So, why not come up to the Queens Domain COVID-safe clubrooms and see what we get up to. If it is too cold to make it up to the Domain why not take a look on RF or the YouTube Streaming channel and we will be taking questions via Repeater Two (146.700), DMR Talk Group 3807 and the YouTube Chat channel.
And a reminder that we go out on RF on 445.5MHz DVB-T 7MHz Standard Definition. So, if you have a TV, Set-top box or USB DTV Dongle that you can tune and scan 445.5MHz and you can see the Queens Domain, then you have a good chance of receiving the DATV Experimenter's Night Signal.
Look out for VK7OTC. We also stream the nights on the REAST YouTube channel.
