Contest News
Summer VHF/UHF Field Day

The Field Day is coming up on the 16th and 17th of January from 01:00 UTC – 01:00 UTC. Remember this is the season for workin
g some great distances on the higher bands so depending on the day you just never know where you may end up talking to. There w
ill be quite a number of fellow VK7â€Ös out and about in a few locations and they would love to make a contact with you, and yo
u donâ€Öt have to go portable to participate. Logging is easy as many of the logging programs will be aware of this contest and
 do all the point calculations.

There will be activity from 6m all the way up to 3cm. Why not look at building a new antenna for one of the VHF bands and see h
ow far you can reach. There are sections for 8 Hours and for 24 hours if you're very keen.

We plan to use more FM for contacts so that those without SSB equipment can get involved. So even a dual band handheld radio fr
om a good location will be surprisingly efficient and capable.

Hope to hear you on the bands!

News from the northwest
CHAT AND SHOW GROUP

The next gathering of the group is to be in January on Saturday the 2nd at our new venue in the Ulverstone Recreation Centre in
Flora Street West Ulverstone. Drive into the car park closes to the river and look for a notice saying Show Society Office on
the verandah and use that entrance and continue to the end of the corridor through the door at the end and you are in the room.

It is the middle of the festive season and some may be away, but then maybe there will be amateur visitors in the area at the t
ime that are welcome to drop in for a chat. The afternoon kicks off at 2pm and drop in is from 2pm until 3.30 and all amateurs
are welcome, it is not a club just a social group.

We have afternoon tea and I ask at this time due to COVID-19 to please make your afternoon tea offering a small one, and in a c
ommercially produced product where all precautions are necessary for the production of goods as advised by government regulatio
ns.

Remember all amateurs are welcome to visit from anywhere as long as they are COVID free, and not been close to an overseas trav
eller or someone infected, and do not have any symptoms - if you do have symptoms don't call.

If you have any questions contact me on 0417 392 583.

NW Tassie Amateur Repeater Group Net

North West Amateurs have indicated they would like a local repeater net

So, on Wednesday nights at 2000hrs local, the NW Tassie Amateur Repeater Group, will conduct a net on VK7RMD 146.625, 141.3 ton
e.

This repeater is located on Mt Duncan behind Penguin and the repeater has a large coverage area from Smithton to Launceston and
 into the back country.

We want it to be informal, but run by a net controller, so everyone can get a spot to chat about what they are up to, projects
they are working on, ideas, propagation, anything radio and electronic related and we will be staying away from politics, relig
ion and all the other no nos.

This is totally independent of any clubs and organisation, and its aim is to foster relations between amateurs, and keep the PA
s in the radios used and warm.

Anyone who can hear the net is welcome to join in

Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club Incorporated

www.ntarc.net

2020 has been an interesting year for many people what with COVID-19 and other health issues for a number of our members, Iâ€Öm
sure many of us cannot wait to see 2021 roll in and hopefully a better year for all.

As this weekly news is the last till that man in red arrives, this is our final opportunity, to wish everyone a Merry and Safe
Christmas. For those of us travelling over this period please take it easy and obey all speed limits, as those men in blue are
busy at this time of year. The other thing to remember is donâ€Öt drive and use your mobile. That call can surely wait until yo
ur next stop. Enjoy your Christmas feast with family and friends.

As I mentioned last week not a great deal happens at this time of the year so reruns are featured quite often, but thankfully P
eter VK7KPC has sent us an item of interest so will now hand over to him;

â€During the last week, Peter VK7KPC has been recording the received audio signal level on 10.00 MHz from his NRD-515 receiver
connected to a tuned vertical antenna. This has been a part of the Festival of Frequency Measurement coordinated by Kristina Co
llins KD8OXT from Ham Radio Science Citizen Investigation organisation. This is an American organisation that wishes to advance
scientific research and understanding through amateur radio activities among other ham related activities.
Trevor VK7TB had his audio phasing test jig to show, using the digital microscope to check some of the SMD soldering on the boa
rds. He also had some of his filter boards using them to show the magnification capabilities of the microscope. This led into a
Trevor â€masterclass†membership lapse for any reason, please consider re-joining. In either case, an application form can be
 found at the clubroom.

If club membership is not your cup of tea, we fully understand. In those circumstances, perhaps you might care to make a direct
donation to our repeater fund, rather than pay a yearly subscription. If so, we would be happy to receive your contribution, e
ither in person at a club meeting or coffee morning, or by post to PO BOX 275 Launceston 7250. Any donation will gladly be acce
pted. All donations will be officially receipted and noted accordingly against the repeater project.

We will be thinking of our member Kevin VK7HKN who will be off to Hobart next week for heart surgery. Kevin will be in hospital
over Christmas so our best wishes go to him and Lyn for his fast recovery.
Future events

Tech Net – Nic VK7WW will run an â€informal HoHoHoâ€eens Domain, then you have a good chance of receiving the DATV Experiment
er's Night Signal.

Look out for VK7OTC. We also stream the nights on the REAST YouTube channel.

Huge expansion of emergency satellite comms

Hundreds of new satellite dishes will provide better connectivity for first responders and the community.

Hundreds of Disaster Satellite Service communications dishes will be installed around Australia on buildings such as Rural Fire
Service depots as part of the federal governmentâ€Ös $37.1 million Strengthening Telecommunications Against Natural Disaster (
STAND) program.

The service provides a back-up communications connection that will be switched to ‘disaster modeâ€Ö during an emergency event
, providing free full satellite broadband functionality, including Wi-Fi and video streaming.

Also part of the STAND program are five new satellite dish-equipped NBN Road Muster trucks and 12 satellite dishes in travel ki
ts.

Almost 100 of the satellite dishes will have been installed, and all of the Road Muster trucks and satellite dish travel kits w
ill have been delivered by the end of 2020.

The trucks and satellite travel kits can be deployed to provide temporary broadband connectivity for communities that have thei
r normal communications disrupted by natural disasters.

The first of the new Disaster Satellite Service installations was unveiled at Namadgi in the ACT on 9 December, following the a
warding of a grant of $7 million to NBN Co to install units at designated emergency management sites and evacuation centres. Ar
ound 95 will have been installed by the end of 2020, with the remaining locations to be equipped in 2021 as agreed between the
federal, state and territory governments.

The locations slated to have received the installations by the end of 2020 in Tasmania are as follows:

Lilydale Memorial Hall,

Wynyard Sports Centre,

Swansea Town Hall,

Mathinna Recreation Ground,

Karoola,

Miena Community Hall,

Huon Valley PCYC Building,

Elma Fagan Community Centre Waratah,

Pyengana Hall,

Town Hall – Currie,

Sorell Memorial Hall,
