Contest News

Ross Hull Memorial VHF UHF Contest

The Ross Hull memorial contest is currently underway for the entire month of January. From previous years VK7 has not had a hug
e number of log submissions for this contest. This is the year we want to make a difference. The Ross Hull memorial VHF-UHF con
test runs for the whole of January and is a good chance to make some contacts on the higher bands. You can even use the contact
s from the Summer Field Day in this contest as well.

It occurs to me that we have a great 23cm net on a Sunday morning both in the North and South of Tasmania, so what better oppor
tunity to get many operators on to exchange some numbers on 23cm, and even on the other VHF UHF bands. I would like to propose
that this Sunday the 10th of January we gather on 1296.50 after the 23cm net has completed at 11:00am local and look at exchang
ing some call signs and numbers. If people are keen, we could branch off to other frequencies on other bands such as the favour
ites 52.525, 146.500 and 439.00 on FM.

VKCL is one of the particularly good logging programs that will take care of logging and scoring based on your Maidenhead Locat
or. There is a new version of VKCL V4.13.1 A quick search will lead you to the downloads area.

Rules are on the WIA website and there are Sections for Best 7 days Digital and Analog, and Best 2 days Digital and Analog so s
omething for everybody.

Have a look about to discover your current Maidenhead Grid Square. There are web sites that you can select your location and of
course mobile phone apps that will give perfectly accurate results. You really only need 6 figures.

Summer VHF/UHF Field Day

Not long to go now for the Summer Field day for VHF/UHF amateurs. The contest is on the weekend of the 16th and 17th of January
from 01:00 UTC – 01:00 UTC. This is a great opportunity to get that VHF/UHF gear out and give it a bit a run. This is the se
ason for all sorts of unpredictable propagation on the higher bands so you just never know how far and wide you will get to. Pl
ease try and use one of the great logging programs as your log can be uploaded from within the log program. We are happy to off
er some assistance with installing, using and then how to check and then send your log using the program VKCL. It is important
to make sure that all entries are done accurately, as there have been quite a few mistakes and lost points due to errors in cal
l signs, report exchanges, band, mode etc so bear that in mind.

Frequencies are not set in stone but a good start 6M – 50.150 USB or 52.525 FM, 2M 144.150 USB or 146.500 FM, 70cm 432.150 US
B or 439.000 FM, 23cm 1296.150 USB or FM, 13cm 2403.150 USB, 9cm 3398.150 USB, 3cm 10,368.150 USB.

Hope to hear you on the bands!

The current list of Cards held as at 1 January 2021, is in the email version of the broadcast.

If you received your callsign in recent years and see it in the list would you please email Herman advising him of the date you
acquired the Call as I do have some cards from years back and Herman is finding some of those operators are new as the origina
l owner is no longer active or Silent Key. Herman thanks those who have already advised him of the various callsigns held since
 they obtained their licence.

If you have any questions re QSL cards, please contact Herman by email vk7bureau(at)wia.org.au

Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club Incorporated

Club has reopened. – The clubrooms re-opened on Friday 8th January. The first coffee morning for 2021 was well attended with
17 members eager to resume show and tell, technical discussions and general socialising in the New Year. A very enjoyable morni
ng.

The regular weekly coffee sessions are therefore again up and running. See you there on a Friday morning, from 10.00 am running
through to around midday – but longer if members want to linger.

We hand over to Nic VK7WW, who provides us with a run down on what happened last Wednesday 6th January TestNet and TechNet sess
ion;

â€Thanks to Paul VK7KPA, the Internet Discord Channel was on at the same time as the HF Nets allowing users to hear streaming a
udio and post comments. Phil VK7ZPD also provided an audio link.
e report from Nic last week, cheekily saying it was a Line Conditioner and not an auto-transformer, that he had made available
to â€Rattyâ€ew daysâ€reset mode (greater than 1.3:1 will tune). There are also additional bypass and auto additional buttons. T
he maximum inductance is 8.53uH in 0.05uH steps and the maximum capacitance is 1869pF in 10pF steps.

It was found that anything below 1:1.3 is considered matched and you need 5W or more to get it to tune which is a little tricky
with the IC-705 as it appears that the 705 has protection on it's PA that automatically reduces the power level below the 5W t
hat will trigger the auto tune function. More to come!

We then had a promo of the VHF/UHF Field Day - reminding people of the date - 16th and 17th of January from 01:00 UTC – 01:00
 UTC.

Justin then took the audience through the completed Demonstrator Baseloaded Vertical that he intends to use for the practical a
ssessments. This unit tunes 80, 40, 20 & 10m with a small variable capacitor to vary the SWR and demonstrate matching the trans
mitter to the antenna.

Richard VK7ZBX then took the audience through the Ross Hull Contest that runs for the whole of January and logs contacts on VHF
and above. The idea is that we ask our 23cm operators on Sunday morning to contact each other before and after 11am on Sunday
morning as you can only make one contact per day with an amateur.

Our videos for the night included â€why 50 ohmsâ€
