IN OUR 26th YEAR OF NON STOP NEWS

AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH PORTAL

In this weeks edition of the news you trust we'll hear from
WIA Directors Peter VK8ZZ and Oscar VK3TX along with
resident 'thinker' Geoff VK4 Z PP and go to the movies
 with John VK4JJW

THIS & MORE IN THIS EDITION OF NEWS FROM THE
 WIRELESS INSTITUTE OF AUSTRALIA

Last weeks 160m news in VK6 was broadcast by Chris, VK6JI,
who kindly stepped in for Phil VK6GX, as he has
no antennas, due to the enormous bush fires there.

Local bush fire brigade managed to save Phils house
and garage, bur the rest of the property was incinerated,
including all antennas and above ground feeders, as were
most of the power lines in the area.

Many of our friends and neighbours, in the Tilden Park area
were not so lucky, with many homes lost.

He's running off generators and expects to do so for
several weeks until mains power is restored.

VK6GX is currently isolated by road blocks, but thankfully a
local store, that he can access, has fuel and groceries.
The local CWA girls have been distributing donated food and
 essentials at their Gidgie Hall.

Thoughts with you and your Family Phil VK6GX, wia rebroadcaster
 in the west.

Last week when we mentioned how Bob VK6POP managed to escape
those fires and would be continuing bringing the local area
news to VK6 from News West we mentioned he'd be doing so
as neither Fire nor Covid would stop his efforts.

Little did we know then that COVID WOULD stop 2 hamfests.
 WYONG and EMDRC.

" The best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry
And so it is with the 2021 Eastern and Mountain
   district radio club Hamfest.

With ongoing covid restrictions in Melbourne and some
specific event requirements surrounding our chosen school
   hall venue.

EMDRC has decided it best to cancel our Sunday March 28th
   2021 Hamfest.

The club wishes to thank everyone who has supported our
events in the past and we look forward to welcoming you
back again soon. Once we all get through this challenge.

Keep an eye on the EMDRC club website and our social media
channels with planning already underway for our next event.

   Thanks.

The Eastern and Mountain District radio club committee.
   VK3ER.

   Thanks

AND WYONG - the Southern Hemispheres largest Ham Gathering.

Ed VK2JI / DD5LP picks up the story

In light of the recent new COVID events across Australia and
the situation's changeable nature at present, the executive
committee of the Central Coast ARC, with input from a survey
of club members, has decided not to run the Wyong Field Day
2021 which was planned for Sunday the 28th of February.

This is a decision that was not easy and was taken considering
the safety of the club members, traders and those who attend
 the day.

However, open your calendar's as the club wishes to announce
the Central Coast Amateur Radio Club MayHam event which
will be held on Sunday the 30th of May 2021 at the
 Wyong Race Course.

We would like to see this one-time event attract as many
visitors as the Field Day does every year, who knows, this
could be the largest gathering of radio amateurs in the
 Southern Hemisphere this year!

Traders have already been contacted and informed of the new
date and we expect the exhibitor and lecturer variety to be
just as broad as was planned for the 2021 Field Day.

Full details and information regarding this event will be
updated on the clubs website on ccarc.org.au and through
social media as it becomes available.

Looking forward to NO MAYHEM at the MayHam event,
For the Central Coast ARC this was Ed VK2JI.

Some 55 years ago we Aussies had to learn a whole new monetry
system, no doubt to keep in good with our EU mates who were
at the time arriving in droves! HiHi. As we draw closer to
the end of this weeks news = The Aussie News you can trust,
we'll pay a visit to decametric Radio emissions, thanks to

Advanced Mobile Location (AML) technology has been used to
save stranded kayakers from rough waters at Seacliff in
South Australia, pinpointing the pairs location after a
Triple Zero call on New Years Eve.

AML speeds up emergency response times for people in need of
urgent help, and it proved crucial when two people became
caught in strong winds on the kayak approximately
3 kilometres offshore and unable to paddle back to safety.

Criticalcomms.com.au say a man on the kayak called
Triple Zero, automatically activating AML, which honed in
on the remote location with lifesaving accuracy.

With AML, smartphones use GPS, Wi-Fi and mobile network
information to automatically send an SMS text message to
Triple Zero with the phones estimated location. This SMS
is sent in the background; the caller is not required to
 perform an action.

New car prices here in Australia are probably going to remain
relatively high all due to a world-wide shortage of, of all
things a shortage of the humble semi-conductor.

Delays on most main stream cars here are said to have in
some cases delays of several months. At the end of the first
year of the corona virus car sales actually boomed here, then
the shortage of semi-conductors 'hit home'.

Computer chip makers are running at maximum capacity and its
not feasible for companies to build factories to compensate
for the increase in demand, Bloomberg has reported.

Phone makers like Apple are more prepared to pay higher
prices for the chips than automakers are, according to an
analyst. That doesnt mean phone makers havent been
negatively impacted by the chip shortage though Apple
reportedly faced supply issues for chips to power its
5G-equipped iPhone 12 models that debuted in last October.

But the auto industry specifically has felt the pinch, and
some have even had to halt production due to the shortage.
Ford and Fiat are temporarily pausing production because
 they dont have enough chips.

With not enough chips in supply, the auto making industry
could lose $US61 billion in 2021, according to consulting
firm Alix Partners as Bloomberg reported.

 WIA BOARD NEWSLETTERS (older)
Giving members to have a better awareness of Board activities.
 wia.org.au/joinwia/wia/newsletters/

WIA DIRECTOR AND SECRETARY PETER CLEE VK8ZZ

Good morning Graham and good morning listeners,

Last week President Greg and Vice President Lee spoke about
the upcoming consultation by our regulator, the Australian
 Communications and Media Authority (ACMA).

 tinyurl.com/1wa5pu7e

Greg mentioned that this consultation is "Something that
should be of both interest and concern of all Radio Amateurs
in Australia". Greg also said the this very important
consultation has the potential for major changes to the
Amateur Radio Service and its licensing regime.

We as amateurs must carefully consider and weigh up the
options that have been proposed by the ACMA.

The board of the Wireless Institute of Australia met last
Tuesday to discuss the proposed consultation and the
WIA response. At this stage, the board will require more
information in order to form an opinion on the proposed
changes. The board has decided to meet with experts within
our Amateur Community and for them to write a discussion
paper which will be put out to members for comment, probably
in the form of a poll like that recently conducted by the
 WIA.

That panel will meet next week to commence the process.

I will report again once the panel has met and a timetable
 has been determined.

This has been WIA Director and Secretary Peter VL8ZZ for the
 VK1WIA national news service

This is WIA Director Oscar, VK3TX.

hamradio.org Domain now to promote amateur radio.

In past days Andrew, KI7RYC, donated the hamradio.org domain
to the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) to be used
for educational purposes and to promote the amateur and
 amateur satellite services.

IARU President Tim Ellam, VE6SH, has expressed:
The hamradio.org domain offers a unique opportunity for
which we are deeply grateful to Andrew. It is our intention
to develop a website that can serve as a focal point for
anyone, anywhere, who may be seeking information on amateur
radio, which is better known as ham radio by the general
  public.

 Whats IARU?

The IARU is the global federation of national amateur radio
organisations with member-societies in more than 160
countries and separate territories. Since 1925, the IARU has
successfully defended and expanded access to the radio
 spectrum by radio amateurs internationally.

This is Oscar, VK3TX for WIA national news.

 DISCUSSION POINT

Hello, Im Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and Ive been thinking.

As if the gods of coincidence had looked upon us, when
Amateur Radio magazine number one for 2021 arrived I was
delighted to read a well presented and constructive 2 page
article/contribution by VK4YE, Chris Bourke. It is
serendipity that this piece has been published coinciding
with the release of the ACMA Consultation. Chris who is a
graduate teacher has drawn the practices of other English
speaking jurisdictions in training and examining for
accreditation of the various grades of amateur radio licence
and the issuance of the necessary documentation.

 Amateur Radio, Vol.89 No 1 2021 pp56-57

I can do no better than quote the closing paragraph from
Chris, For our futures sake, the present system must not
be allowed to continue in its current guise.

So from the video of VK3YE last week to the written words
of VK4YE, this week, I ask that people forget their hobby
horses and consider where you want Amateur Radio to be in
 the future.

Im Geoff Emery and thats what I think.how about you?

A new targeted phishing campaign includes the novel
obfuscation technique of using Morse code to hide malicious
 URLs in an email attachment.

For example, if your computer was targeted, the attachment
would be named with something like
 "yourname_invoice_1308._xlsx.hTML.'

When viewing the attachment in a text editor, you can see
that they include JavaScript that maps letters and numbers
to Morse code. For example, the letter 'e' is mapped to a
single dot the letter 'b' is mapped to 'dash dot dot dot'

The script then calls a decode Morse function to decode a
Morse code string into a hexadecimal string. This hexadecimal
string is further decoded into JavaScript tags that are
 injected into the HTML page.

These injected scripts combined with the HTML attachment
contain the various resources necessary to render a fake
Excel spreadsheet that states your sign-in timed out
and prompts you to enter their password again.

 INDONESIA

First QO-100 satellite contact from Indonesia

Indonesia's national amateur radio society, ORARI, reports

its opinion of the draft of the amendment to the
 Telecommunications Act 2020 (TKG 2020)

Michael Kastelic, OE1MCU, a Board Member of the OVSV says
the most important topics that the VSV has taken up:

Carry out amateur radio exams by radio amateurs
Prevent our callsigns from expiring [Lifetime license]
   Reduce fees and penalties

 FRANCE

Twelve bottles of Bordeaux wine and dozens of vine shoots
are back home in southwest France after spending months on
the International Space Station for an unusual astrochemistry
 experiment.

The red wine and 320 mature shoots known as canes arrived
February 1 after their return to Earth via a Dragon capsule
 operated by SpaceX.

They will be analysed at the Institute of Vine and Wine
Science in Bordeaux to see how the stresses produced by
zero gravity affect both grape growth and the finished
product, which could spur new agricultural research.

 USA

RMS Titanic, Inc., (RMST) the company that owns salvage
rights to the Titanic shipwreck, has indefinitely put off
its plans to retrieve the vessels radio equipment for
exhibit. The company cited the coronavirus pandemic for the
delay, according to a court filing the company made on
January 29. The Atlanta-based company said its plans have
faced increasing difficulty associated with international
travel and logistics, and the associated health risks to the
expedition team. RMSTs primary source of revenue comes
from its exhibits of its vast collection of Titanic relics,
which have been closed or seen only limited attendance due
 to virus-related restrictions.

RMST a subsidiary of Premier Exhibitions and the
salvor-in-possession of the Titanic wreck site said its
planned expedition to recover the ships wireless station
equipment remains a top priority, however, and will
take place as soon as reasonably practicable.

The Marconi-equipped station transmitted the distress calls
after the Titanic (on its maiden voyage) struck an iceberg
some 370 miles off the coast of Newfoundland in 1912 and
began sinking. The transmissions, heard by nearby vessels,
have been credited with helping rescue some 700 passengers
in lifeboats deployed from the Titanic, but about 1,500
passengers were lost in the disaster.

RMST has said the radio transmitter could unlock some of
the secrets about a missed warning message and distress
 calls sent from the ship.

 MEDIA WATCH WITH JOHN VK4JJW

Freestyle Digital Media has released a trailer for
 " Dead Air ", a supernatural / psychological thriller
 from filmmaker Kevin Hicks.

Not to be confused with the zombies radio horror film
also titled Dead Air from 2009, they both involve radio,
but this is a different kind of radio.

Struggling to uncover the truth of a deeply repressed memory
of an old trauma, William discovers an old ham radio that
belonged to his dead father. In his fascination with it, he
stumbles into contact with Eva, a woman with a dark secret
 of her own.

Their two worlds collide, and William is rushed down a path
that is paved with deceit, lies and an awful truth, a truth
that pulls him into a world of darkness from which he cannot
 escape.

For many an "old" radio broadcaster the title alone sends
shivers up your spine! Dead Air! Will the Content Director
 be first to phone?

Canadian (Belleville) Sea Cadet PO2 Duncan Culliton VA3FSY,
has recently received his federal Morse Code operator
 licence endorsement.

His examiner is quoted as reporting "He has a particularly
good fist - perfect character formation and spacing steady
speed." As one of the cadets that obtained his Amateur Radio
Licence, Duncan went on to study Morse Code adding that
 endorsement to his license.

The Communications Department of the Sea Cadet Corps,
led by Matthew Batten VE3ZQW, was launched as a local unit
initiative to introduce more science, technology,
engineering, and math back into the optional Sea Cadet
training program, as well as a primer for naval/maritime
 communications using amateur radio.

Cadets are currently being trained towards their own amateur
radio qualifications, with plans to have the unit station,
VA3GKY accredited as a Canadian Forces Affiliate Radio
Service station, as well as an Amateur Radio Emergency
Service ARES station, allowing Duncan and the other cadets
to take part in Canadian Forces, Coast Guard, Police/Emergency

 CLUBBING

Held a couple of Wednesday's back REAST in Hobart had a
 presentation by Dr. Mike, VK7MJ.

 "Listening to the Planets"

Decametric Radio emissions from the planet Jupiter, were
first identified by Burke and Franklin while calibrating a
22 MHz antenna array in Maryland USA in 1955.

This was confirmed by data collected by Alex Shain in
Australia some 4 years earlier, and opened a new field
 of planetary astronomy.

This talk was a brief outline of the early history of
decametric radio astronomy and how observations in
Tasmania and New Zealand between 1971 and 1975, provided
the first dynamic spectra of the Jovian radio bursts.

All this achieved on a shoestring budget, and using an
early generation of domestic videotape recorders in a way
 their manufacturers never intended.

This was the subject of Mike's PhD!

Check out the REAST YouTube channel.

Call-backs follow the RF editions, but also for text readers you may
lodge a quick reply to let us know you read it, who knows, you might
even get a "cheerio call".

Thanks to our dedicated band of broadcast volunteers who utilize
their time and equipment in bringing you this weekly broadcast.
Who and where are they?

The purpose of "WIANews" is to rapidly provide news of interest to
WIA affiliated clubs and active amateurs residing in Australia and
the globe.

We strongly encourage membership in the Wireless Institute of
Australia and participation in the activities of local clubs.
Opinions expressed in "WIANews" are those of the writers who submit
material and do not necessarily reflect those of the rebroadcasters,
nor the National WIA, but IF broadcast, are done so in the spirit in
which they were submitted."

Material may be reproduced in whole or in part, in any form,
a credit to WIANews wouldn't go astray...

If you would like to see the call-backs reported each broadcast,
