Michael Hyde-Wyatt

Michael attended the REAST Wednesday Afternoon Groups semi-regularly with his support workers and attended last Wednesdayâ€Ös group.

It is with heavy heart that I have to inform you that Michael suddenly passed away in his sleep, overnight last Wednesday night.

We don't have much other information, but I know that he had a great day on Wednesday, visiting the REAST group and then heading out to Bellerive in good mood, in the nice weather.

Thank you to everyone for being so welcoming to Michael and his support workers.

Kind Regards,

Hiroyuki Mori, Support Worker Supervisor

NW Chat & Show Group

The next gathering of the group will be at 2pm on Saturday the 6th of March, in Flora Street West Ulverstone at the sport stadium. You can find it by parking in the carpark closest to the river and look for the veranda with the title of Ulverstone Show Society on it, enter it, and right down at the end of the corridor through two doors you will find us.

As advised by COVID directions commercially produced cake, a 4 pack would be heaps, or a packet of biscuits would be welcome for afternoon tea, and you can take your leftovers home with you. I will have my usual tea/coffee box with me.

Remember this afternoon is open to amateur and partner from anywhere and is just a social gathering, and if there is enough to make it worth while Terry VK7JAI will hopefully have something to show us.

It must also be mentioned not to attend if you have had any recent association with someone who has been overseas, or have cold or flu symptoms.

I hope to catch up with some of you on 6th March.

Shirl VK7HSC, Group Organiser

Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club Incorporated

There will be a report about the NTARC AGM in next weekâ€Ös broadcast.

2021 Membership fees – to all those members who have not yet paid their 2021 subs, a reminder that you officially became listed as unfinancial on the register on the 1st January. If you are in that boat, then this might be an appropriate time to remedy that situation.

In case you have forgotten, NTARCâ€Ös 2021 membership fees are $35.00 for a Full voting member and $5 additional for each Family member that the voting member wishes to add to his or her primary membership.

If you are not a member of NTARC please consider joining. If you have been a member in the past but have let that membership lapse for any reason, please consider rejoining. Why not pop into the clubroom on a Friday, during coffee hours and collect an application. You will be made most welcome.

If club membership is not your cup of tea, we fully understand. In those circumstances, perhaps you might care to make a direct donation to our repeater fund, rather than pay a yearly subscription. If so, we would be happy to receive your contribution, either in person at a club meeting or coffee morning, or by post to PO BOX 275 Launceston 7250. Any donation will gladly be accepted. All donations will be officially receipted and noted accordingly against the repeater projects.
Future events

TechNet session – Wednesday 17th February, at 1930 hrs, (7.30 pm) hosted by Nic VK7WW on 3.580 MHz. The TechNet is preceded by a TestNet, also hosted by Nic, at 1900 hrs (7.00) on 3.567 MHz for any stations wishing to test their homebrew transmitters, repaired equipment, new acquisitions etc. Nic is able to accommodate SSB, AM and CW transmissions and is always happy to hear from any station wishing to utilise the net.

Tech Night – Wednesday 24th February at the NTARC Club rooms 19:30 hours until whenever. Continuous tea and coffee will be available, although a gold coin donation for the evening would be appreciated. The Discord on-line session that normally accompanies the TechNet 80 meter event will also be alive, Murphy permitting, to allow members who cannot be present in person to continue their participation via that medium.

Equine event – Saturday 27th February. This will be our first ride for the year. It is the Jill Sheean Memorial ride and is being held at Sassafras. This is a day ride consisting of three rides, they being an 80km, 40km and 20 km event. NTARC will be setting up two checkpoints plus Comms base. If you can assist on the day then please contact our Safety Comms Coordinator Norm VK7KTN by email: safetycomms.ntarc(at)gmail.com or catch up with him at coffee on a Friday. Sassafras is a pleasant 1 hour drive from Launceston and a great way to support a community activity utilising your amateur radio skills.

Coffee mornings – currently held every Friday in the NTARC Club rooms. Catch up time is from 10.00 am to noon and we look forward to seeing you all.

These coffee events in the past have been normally a good opportunity to collect your QSL cards. Currently we have a few cards awaiting collection from past deliveries.

Finally – A reminder to all members that if you have any items of news you would like added to our weekly roundup, no matter how trivial, then please email me at the following address ntarc.emails(at)gmail.com , all items to be received no later than 17:00 on the Friday prior to the Broadcast.

Your continued cooperation in this regard will be greatly appreciated.

We will bring you all such contributions next Sunday morning.

73, Yvonne VK7FYMX, Secretary NTARC Inc

Check-In Tasmania is now at the Domain.

We would like to inform all members, friends and visitors of the REAST club rooms that we now have the check-in Tasmania service available.

This is the Health Departments recommended method of checking in to a building, that is used by many and varied people.

All members will receive an email with plenty of info about this.

The Check in TAS app will enable our clubrooms to easily comply with the Public Health Directions by enabling members to self-check-in at the clubrooms and have their information directly stored with the Tasmanian Government for contact tracing (if required).

Use of the app will help the Tasmanian contact tracing team quickly identify and assist anyone who may have been exposed to COVID-19.

We would like to sincerely thank the members that came forward and asked for this to be put in place.

REAST Presentation Wrap-Up

Listening to the Planets

Dr. Mike Groth VK7MJ presented the subject of his PhD thesis in the 1970s at the University of Otago, New Zealand.

Mike started with some history of Decametric Radio Astronomy and the early work by Alex Shain in 1951 in NSW. Mike played a audio file of the interference that was later identified as radio bursts from Jupiter. Moving to the 1955 Burke & Franklin Mills Cross experiments that accidental picked up Jovian bursts.

Mike then went into the frequency dependence between 5 and 35 MHz and played examples of the long bursts and described the short bursts. Then Mike went into the evidence that these bursts were clearly being generated by a magnetic field and how charged particles react in planetary magnetic fields.

Mike then went into the 1960â€Ös technology that was being used and the work that Warwick published indicating the magnetic field on Jupiter was 20 times that of the earth. There was also evidence that radio bursts were coming from the moon Io that correlated with the orbit of that moon. This was corroborated by microwave work done by CSIRO in the 1960s.

Mike then went into how the very short bursts where recorded through an innovative use of a early domestic video recorder.

Mike headed to New Zealand and the University of Otago in Dunedin between 1970 and 1975 which at these latitudes was some of the best conditions for observing Jupiter. Work was going on in both NZ and Tasmania.

There was an outline of the facility and the antenna location on Swampy Summit with a sloping co-linear array. A description of the innovative use of 35mm film with a CRO, video recorder, rudimentary spectrum analyser from 22-25 MHz and television receiver.

They developed the Zenograph video tape analyser to split the spectrum into five datapoints for very fast recording and capture of the short radio bursts. The University of Tasmania recorded from 12-15 MHz and the Mike at the University of Otago recorded 23-25 MHz.

It was theorised that the short bursts were created by bunches of electrons ascending from the planet along the magnetic field lines and the data appeared to correlate both in NZ and Tasmania.

Mike then went on to the subsequent NASA missions to Jupiter proved that the theory was in fact correct and Hubble images supported the theory as well.

Mike then took questions from the audience.

Huge thank you to Mike for an amazing presentation on his research.

The presentation was recorded and is available on the REAST YouTube Channel.

Technology News
Using power-line noise to map Sporadic E

Radio amateur Chris Fallen KL3WX contributed to a research paper that looks at using broadband radio noise from Power Lines to map and track dense Sporadic E structures

The paper presents passive observations of mid-latitude sporadic E (Es) structures in the 30 to 50 MHz range using the Long Wavelength Array (LWA) telescopes in New Mexico. Spectral and temporal analysis of the structures reveals that some of the emissions can be characterized by broadband, spark ‐like radiation occurring at a repetition frequency of 60 Hz. The azimuthal distribution indicates that the brightest emissions come from the directions of several large metropolitan centers with distances ranging from 700 to 1250 km from the telescopes. This implies that the source is unintended human ‐made noise, originating from devices connected to 60 Hz alternating current power.

The geometry of the observations rule out coherent scatter from field ‐aligned irregularities, and indicate that the unintended noise must undergo a specular reflection off of over ‐dense plasma distributed approximately parallel to Earth's surface. On certain occasions the reflections are seen at such high frequencies and high elevation angles that the local plasma frequency must be above 30 MHz.

During both day and night Es conditions, the dense structures are observed to be arranged in propagating fronts, and travel at speeds of 70 to 100 m/s. We also present observations that reveal quasi ‐periodic amplitude oscillations with frequencies consistent with atmospheric gravity waves and acoustic waves.

The paper is available from the link in the email edition of this broadcast.

World Radio Day 2021

Proclaimed in 2011 by the Member States of UNESCO, and adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 as an International Day, February 13 became World Radio Day (WRD).

Radio is a powerful medium for celebrating humanity in all its diversity and constitutes a platform for democratic discourse. At the global level, radio remains the most widely consumed medium. This unique ability to reach out the widest audience means radio can shape a societyâ€Ös experience of diversity, stand as an arena for all voices to speak out, be represented and heard. Radio stations should serve diverse communities, offering a wide variety of programs, viewpoints and content, and reflect the diversity of audiences in their organizations and operations.

On the occasion of World Radio Day 2021 (WRD 2021), UNESCO calls on radio stations to celebrate this eventâ€Ös 10th anniversary and the more than 110 years of radio.

This edition of WRD is divided into three main sub-themes:

EVOLUTION. The world changes, radio evolves.

This sub-theme refers to the resilience of the radio, to its sustainability ;

https://youtu.be/6KZAxN7xPrM

INNOVATION. The world changes, radio adapts and innovate.

Radio has had to adapt to new technologies to remain the go-to medium of mobility, accessible everywhere and to everyone;

https://youtu.be/B0oFZiDT9Nk

CONNECTION. The world changes, radio connects.

This sub-theme highlights radioâ€Ös services to our societyâ€önatural disasters, socio-economic crises, epidemics, etc.
