Records News
First VK7 to ZL Digital Record on 10GHz

Rex VK7MO and Roger ZL3RC had been planning to try a 10 GHz contact this summer if conditions were right. Last Wednesday the Hepburn Charts showed lots of promise between Tasmania and the South Island of New Zealand. Roger decided to travel to the West Coast from Christchurch arriving on Thursday morning. Rex set up at home but had to operate his dish remotely in his neighbours' garden to get a clear take-off between and over trees. Roger first set up near Greymouth. Signals were good on 2 meters with a 5/7 SSB contact both ways. Roger decided it would be better to go North nearer his accommodation before setting up for 10 GHz. He found a spot near Charleston but two meter signals were weaker so he returned to the site near Greymouth. 2 metre signals were still good on SSB and he set up for 10 GHz by mid afternoon.

Both stations were running 60 watts and Rex was using a smaller 77 cm dish and Roger used the 113 cm Petal dish that Rex took to ZL. The distance was 1960 km.

For 10 GHz the new WSJT-X Q65-60D mode was used. The 60 indicates 60 second periods and the D represents a tone spacing of 13 Hz. As soon as Roger started transmitting Rex could hear the tones and a Q65-60D QSO was quickly completed. Test were then done with the Q65-30D mode and then with the Q65-15C and B sub modes. While the 30 and 15 second periods are less sensitive they also worked well but did not decode when signals dropped due to QSB. But on QSB peaks the 15 second periods gave Signal to Noise reports peaking -1 dB. The advantage of the short 15 second periods is that one can use the reports to change to SSB. While callsigns were heard on peaks with SSB an SSB QSO was not completed. So still some more to do.

The record received a wonderful comment from WSJT creator Joe Taylor K1JT - “Congratulations, Rex and Roger -- a very nice accomplishment!!”

News from the North West
NW Chat & Show Group

The next gathering of the group will be at 2pm on Saturday the 6th of March, in Flora Street West Ulverstone at the sport stadium. You can find it by parking in the carpark closest to the river and look for the veranda with the title of Ulverstone Show Society on it, enter it, and right down at the end of the corridor through two doors you will find us.

As advised by COVID directions commercially produced cake, a 4 pack would be heaps, or a packet of biscuits would be welcome for afternoon tea, and you can take your leftovers home with you. I will have my usual tea/coffee box with me.

Remember this afternoon is open to amateur and partner from anywhere and is just a social gathering, and if there is enough to make it worth while Terry VK7JAI will hopefully have something to show us.

It must also be mentioned not to attend if you have had any recent association with someone who has been overseas, or have cold or flu symptoms.

I hope to catch up with some of you on 6th March.

NEWS FROM THE NORTH
New Northern Repeater

Greg VK7YAD advises that VK7RUN channel 3 is currently active [431.850 input/438.850 output] in the Launceston CBD.

Intended for the support of small form factor low power FM handhelds using shortened antenna, offering unsurpassed penetration into buildings and alleyways, it is within 2km of the CBD and serves to facilitate message passing between HAMs out and about during these socially distant times ... but without the social distractions of equipment drawing attention perhaps for the wrong reasons.

For the present time it may also be found on occasion passing Brandmeister Talk Group 91 [Worldwide ENGLISH] traffic as FM {not DMR} during testing, however this is a one way process, RUN-3 does not pass the FM traffic back to the DMR network.

It has been operational for sometime however a faulty power supply caused some early teething problems which now seem to have been overcome ... put it in your receive scan group, give it a try and see what it offers.

VK7RUN-2 [438.825MHz out] continues, as it has for many months now, to broadcast Brandmeister DMR traffic, Talk Group 91 Time Slot 2 Color Code 1, but at low level for continued site testing.

Reception reports, questions or comments to VK7RUN(at)yahoo.com.

Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club Incorporated

Patchy mobile phone coverage in the area being traversed, prevented us bringing you a report on the NTARC AGM last week. Well remedy that situation by leading off with that item today. We hand over to President Idris VK7ZIR;

“The NTARC Annual General Meeting for the 2020/21year was held on Wednesday 10th February and commenced at 19:32 hours (07.32 pm) with 31 members attending, a very good turnout. After the confirmation of the minutes of the 2019 AGM and with no business arising, the President delivered his yearly report on behalf of the Committee. This was followed by the Treasurers annual report with its unanimous acceptance. The Treasurer also delivered the Auditors report which was very complimentary of our financial management. There were no questions from the membership on the treasurers report so we proceeded straight on to the various Activity Managers reports. Peter VK7PD delivered his report on the clubs Education effort for the year. This was followed by a report from JOTA/JOTI coordinator Peter VK7KPC, read to the meeting as Peter was in VK5 at the time. There was no QSL report possible from Kevin VK7HKN due to his current ill health. Repeater Officer Tony VK7YBG and Mt Arthur project manager David VK7JD delivered reports in relation to the northern repeaters. A report from Southern Repeater Officer Hayden VK7HH was read to the members and finally our Safety Community Communications Coordinator Norm VK7KTN read out his yearly summary.

Nic VK7WW gave us a report detailing the TestNet and TechNet sessions he has been running for the past year. At the end of Nics report, Peter VK7PD led a vote of thanks from the members for Nics considerable effort in running the Nets and keeping the Clubs interest active during the COVID-19 period and beyond.

At this point, Nic VK7WW was appointed by the Chair to conduct the elections in the absence of the Public Officer Yvonne VK7FYMX and all committee positions were declared vacant.

The elections saw the return of Idris VK7ZIR as President, Peter VK7KPC as

Vice President, Yvonne VK7FYMX as Secretary, André VK7ZAB as Treasurer, and Roslyn (no call sign) as committee member. Roger VK7ARN was again re-appointed as our Internal Auditor and Yvonne VK7FYMX was re-appointed as our Public Officer.

The following club activity co-ordinators were again appointed to their respective tasks, Tony VK7YBG as Northern Repeater Officer, David VK7JD continuing his role as Project Manager for Mt Arthur, with both being assisted by Paul VK7KPA and Andrew VK7DW as Assistant Repeater Officers. Further afield, Hayden VK7HH continues as our Repeater Officer (South), assisted by Michael VK7MRS.

Other club activity coordinators agreeing to continue in their roles for 2021 were Peter VK7PD as the Education Officer, Peter VK7KPC as our JOTA/JOTI Coordinator and Norm VK7KTN as our Safety Communications Coordinator.

The business of the meeting had proceeded at a good pace, and with no items of special business having been received by the due date, the President brought matters to a close at 20:20 hours and then proceeded to open the February General Meeting.

Minutes from the previous General Meeting in December were tabled and accepted unanimously. There was no business arising. Correspondence in and out was tabled and accepted. The Treasurer then presented End of Month reports for April through to December 2020 and January 2021 for members to peruse. All reports were accepted.

Activity Managers had nothing further to add to their AGM reports and Andrew VK7DW confirmed that he has agreed to assume the position of the NTARC QSL Manager.

In Committee Business, following a general discussion regarding a possible change to our meeting frequency from monthly to bi-monthly, Idris advised attendees that this change is allowed in our Constitution under Rule 16 (1). Peter VK7PD put forward a motion that the frequency of our general meetings be changed from monthly to bi-monthly. The motion was seconded by Paul VK7KPA. There was a unanimous show of hands in favour. Idris therefore declared the motion carried. Next General meeting will therefore be Saturday 10th April and bi-monthly thereafter.

In General Business, there was some further reporting from Tony VK7YBG and David VK7JD on future directions for Mt Arthur. Lyn VK7FROG gave us an update on Kevin VK7HKNs progress and a discussion then occurred regarding the latest ACMA proposal to change the Amateur Radio licencing structure. Further reading and investigation into submissions will be undertaken by Rosco VK7RC.

After this discussion, the meeting closed at 21:20.

Thank you Idris. We now hand over to Nic VK7WW to bring you up to speed on events of Wednesday 17th February. And Nic says,

“The TestNet on 3.580 at 7pm

Four stations on the TestNet, Rick VK7HBR, Phil VK7ZPD, John VK7FJFD and Nic VK7WW. Rick made comparisons with compression setting on his transmit audio; and, Nic was testing an upgrade in power on his home-brew 40 milliwatt AM transmitter - which failed. Boo hoo! Never mind, propagation was very good.

The TechNet as VK7TAZ followed at 7:30pm local time on 3.567 with 11 stations and Nic VK7WW as net controller.

An interesting evening as Rick, VK7HBR promoted the concept of using the TechNet as a “benchmark” to check improvements to anyones station, in their efforts to enhance station performance.

        ◦ VK3HBR Rick, provided detailed signal reports

        ◦ VK3MKE Keith, testing an old Codan “ship to shore” radio

        ◦ VK3BR Bernie, described his inverted “L” antenna - a 40m vertical with a wire extended from its tip horizontal with the ground. He also noticed an increase in local static noise with dry conditions.

        ◦ VK7ZPD Phil streamed the nets audio with Paul VK7KPA, on Discord; and, mentioned “short cuts” on his 590 menu - controlling his transceiver. He also gave an apology for Paul VK2TZZ, who was unable to join us due to work commitments.

        ◦ VK7KPA Paul told us that DMR was now restored on the local repeater. Yes!

        ◦ VK7PD Peter posted some really interesting QSO details on the Internet Discord channel from VK3WE to VK7PD on 10 GHZ! Good effort Peter.

        ◦ VK7HJB James, in St Helens called in with an excellent signal; and, he discovered more features on his IC 7300. Many stations commented on how good the quality was on his audio. A first time call in! Welcome James!

        ◦ VK7MFI Kerry on Flinders Island called-in.

        ◦ VK7KJL Kevin at Dilston gave signal reports; and...

        ◦ VK7ALB Peter, told us of an interesting net of VK3s to be found on 160m at 8pm on 1.865 MHz - a cracking signal Peter!

Thanks Paul VK7KPA for hosting Discord and Phil VK7ZPD - with 7 stations logged-in. On line topics and photos included:

        ◦ Tracking of Chinas Mars Spacecraft by radio amateurs.

        ◦ VK7PDs contact on 10ghz with VK3WE in Gippsland; and

        ◦ Nics QRP ‘enhanced AM transmitter.

Greetings from Tasmania to who also listen in, but cant transmit; and, those who listen to us on SDRs around the world via the Internet, wherever you may be!

This is Nic VK7 Whisky Whisky aka (Double Scotch), on behalf of the Northern Tasmania Amateur Radio Club, now Signing Clear.”

Thanks Nic for that report, as always it is full of news of the various projects and areas of interest being pursued by NTARC members. Thank you for all the effort you put in to get these sessions up and running.

Nics reports of the recent interest in 80m AM transmission has attracted attention further afield. Life member Brian VK7RR in far off Queensland has been in touch to relate some of his own earlier experiences with that mode. And he says:

“I read with interest the antics of some NTARC members who have discovered or re-discovered AM on 80 metres low power. In the mid 1960's when I was still at University I converted an ex-army BC611 handheld as used in WW2, to 3.590mhz, the frequency on which the nightly get together used to be conducted in Hobart. With fully charged batteries to drive the valves in it, you could get 350 milliwatts out on AM. The net controller that night was the late Tom Allen, VK7AL whose station was on the Eastern Shore at Lindisfarne. When the time came for calling back, I tried but my flea power was just insufficient for him to copy my callsign. Various other amateurs, closer to me, were able to QSP my call so I sort of joined that net running a handheld radio with a telescopic whip antenna which was about 30cm long. Thereafter if I was walking home from the University at about 5pm I would call in to the nett with my flea power. On the occasions that I had a clear look at the Derwent River from a relatively high spot on Regent Street, Tom was able to hear me, but more often than not it took someone in the Sandy Bay area to pass on my call.

Some years later I was asked to loan that radio to the then Southern Branch of the WIA for placing in a museum of old radio equipment. I agreed on the basis that it was a loan and I would ask for it back at some future time. Regrettably when I did so I was informed that it had been given away. At that time there were still quite a few ex WW2 radios around. Older members may remember the late Jack Batchelor VK7JB who had a 122 set on which he would call in to the Sunday broadcast round up from Bicheno. I owned two of those sets 55 years ago but have not seen one in years. Many of the Sydney Hobart yachts at that time, used similar radios as purpose built ship to shore, HF radios didn't start to appear until the late 60's.

I hope these memories prompt other members to email in to the broadcast with reminiscences of the good old AM low power days.

Brian VK7RR/4”

ITEM OF INTEREST

Our intrepid contester, NTARC Member Alan VK7BO, has been busy, being again selected to be a member of the Australian team in the RSGB Commonwealth Contest next month. With Alan aboard, the Australian team has won the team section for the past four years.

Alan also entered the Hungarian DX Contest on CW and was awarded 1st Place Australia and 1st Place Oceania. He has the certificates but he may also receive a 'Plaquet' hi hi.

The Hungarian Society (MRASZ) also states:

PARTICIPANTS IN THE SINGLE OP: OPERATOR+1 PERSON, MULTI OPERATOR OP: UP TO 8 PERSON CATEGORIES WITH THE HIGHEST SCORES ARE INVITED TO SPEND 1 WEEK IN THE MRASZ BUDAPEST GUEST HOUSE.

A nice thought but unlikely given COVID hi hi.

We wish Alan all the best in the upcoming RSGB Commonwealth Contest.

FUTURE EVENTS

Tech Night – Wednesday 24th February at the NTARC Club rooms 19:30 hours until whenever. Continuous tea and coffee will be available, although a gold coin donation for the evening would be appreciated. The Discord on-line session that normally accompanies the TechNet 80 meter event will also be alive, to allow members who cannot be present in person to continue their participation via that medium.

Equine event – Saturday 27th February. This will be our first ride for the year. It is the Jill Sheean Memorial ride and is being held at Sassafras. This is a day event consisting of three rides, they being an 80km, 40km and 20 km event. NTARC will be setting up two checkpoints plus Comms base. If you can assist on the day then please contact our Safety Comms Coordinator Norm VK7KTN by email: safetycomms.ntarc@gmail.com or catch up with him at coffee on a Friday. Sassafras is a pleasant 1 hour drive from Launceston and a great way to support a community activity while utilising your amateur radio skills.

TestNet and TechNet session – Wednesday 3rd March, there will again be a TestNet, hosted by Nic VK7WW, at 1900 hrs (7.00) on 3.580 MHz for any stations wishing to test their homebrew transmitters, repaired equipment, new acquisitions etc. Nic is able to accommodate SSB, AM and CW transmissions and is always happy to hear from any station wishing to utilise the net. Nic VK7WW also hosts the TechNet session which follows on at 1930 hrs, (7.30 pm) on 3.567MHz. Please note these corrected frequencies, as I have apparently managed to transpose them in recent broadcasts.

FURTHER AHEAD

April General Meeting – Saturday 10th April. Meeting commences 14:00 hours (2.00pm). Afternoon tea will follow.

Coffee mornings – currently held every Friday in the NTARC Club rooms. Catch up time is from 10.00 am to noon and we look forward to seeing you all.

These coffee events in the past have been normally a good opportunity to collect your QSL cards. Currently we have a few cards awaiting collection from past deliveries.

Finally – A reminder to all members that if you have any items of news you would like added to our weekly roundup, no matter how trivial, then please email me at the following address ntarc.emails(at)gmail.com , all items to be received no later than 17:00 on the Friday prior to the Broadcast.

Your continued cooperation in this regard will be greatly appreciated.

We will bring you all such contributions next Sunday morning.

Check-In Tasmania is now at the Domain.

We would like to inform all members, friends and visitors of the REAST club rooms that we now have the check-in Tasmania service available.

This is the Health Departments recommended method of checking in to a building, that is used by many and varied people.

All members will receive an email with plenty of info about this.

The Check in TAS app will enable our clubrooms to easily comply with the Public Health Directions by enabling members to self-check-in at the clubrooms and have their information directly stored with the Tasmanian Government for contact tracing (if required).

Use of the app will help the Tasmanian contact tracing team quickly identify and assist anyone who may have been exposed to COVID-19.

We would like to sincerely thank the members that came forward and asked for this to be put in place.

DATV Experimenter's Night

Our host for the night was Warren VK7WN. Warren started with some reminders about the ACMA discussion paper for licence changes and your Ross Hull Memorial Contest logs.

There was also an update on the new WSJTX version that is now available as a release candidate version.

Warren then invited Murray VK7ZMS into the studio who then took the audience through some ATN antenna improvements using 3D printed sleeves and the rejuvenation of a VHF yagi.

Steve VK7OO then joined Warren and took him through the innovative mounting that Steve has come up with for his NanoVNA to protect the connectors. Steve then showed his new Airspy HF + SDR and explained what he is using it for.

Warren finished off with the new 7" LCD monitors within the DATV Studio with queued monitor and the to air monitors on presenters desk. Thanks to Warren VK7WN for hosting the DATV Experimenter's Night.

This coming Wednesday 24th Feb 2021 from 7:30pm we will have Rex VK7MO giving us a presentation on his recent record setting 10GHz VK7MO to ZL3RC digital contact. There will be the latest updates on some very interesting projects going on within the club and we will be reviewing the latest DUBUS and AR Magazines plus much more!

Keep an eye on the REAST Facebook Events for more details. Why not come up to the Queens Domain COVID-safe clubrooms and see what we get up to.

And a reminder that we go out on RF on 445.5MHz DVB-T 7MHz Standard Definition. So, if you have a TV, Set-top box or USB DTV Dongle that you can tune and scan 445.5MHz and you can see the Queens Domain, then you have a good chance of receiving the DATV Experimenter's Night Signal.

Look out for VK7OTC. We also stream the nights on the REAST YouTube channel.
