Contest News
John Moyle Memorial Field Day
Just to remind everybody that the John Moyle field day is coming up soon. The next Field Day will be held over the weekend of the 20th-21st March 2021 and will run from UTC 0100 on the Saturday to 0059 on the Sunday. The contest is open to all VK, ZL and P2 stations. All other stations are welcome to participate, but can only claim points for contacts with VK, ZL and P2 stations. All VK, ZL and P2 stations can claim points for all contacts, with any station in the world, as long as valid serial numbers are exchanged.
The contest rules ensure more logs are submitted, by requiring that if any station works the same station a total of more than 10 times on any band or on any mode then the logs from both stations should be submitted to verify those contacts.
There are a number of categories and they cover portable stations and home stations with the following options.
a) 24 or 6 hour;
b) Phone, CW, Digital or All modes;
c) HF, VHF/UHF or All Bands.
For instance, you can operate for 6 hours, Phone and HF, as an example.
As the points are calculated on distance it is important that you have your 6 digit maidenhead grid locator available for exchange. This can be obtained a number of ways such as app on a smartphone or via the web. https://www.levinecentral.com/ham/grid_square.php
Why not set aside some time to exchange some numbers with those that will be out and about, even if you stay home. The John Moyle field day is a little different than other field days as you can operate on HF is thatâ€Ös your interest. Suitable logging software makes the task of keeping track of rework times and point score. Here are a few options such as VKCL, VK5DJ and many others. This also makes the job of sending your log in an easy task. On VHF / UHF a good spot to checkout will be the usual simplex channels on 6M, 2M, 70cm and 23cm. For those with SSB try the usual XX.150 on USB.
Hope to hear you out and about!

RAOTC Broadcast for March
This is a reminder about the RAOTC broadcast for the 1st of March 2021; thatâ€Ös tomorrow night for those listening on Sunday.
Just another reminder that this will be in the new timeslot starting at 8pm.
As mentioned in the National News there are 2 major items this month; the first is:
Sir Mark Oliphant was featured in the December bulletin. In this monthâ€Ös broadcast we hear part of a recording he made for the opening of the RD Contest 1986; here he tells of development of the klystron and magnetron for high-definition radar during world war 2.
The second article takes reference from the ABC Science programme regarding search engines. Although there are some light hearted moments it takes an in-depth look at the statement: ‘building a search engine to rival Google would cost billionâ€Ö. Find out why.
Another reminder of the new time: 8 pm local time over the VK7RAA/RTC state-wide network and again at about 8:30pm as a telecast on VK7AX ‘Spectrum Tasmaniaâ€Ö via the BATC membersâ€Ö stream and in the Ulverstone area on 445.50MHz DATV.
The date is March 1st. Call backs will follow on both networks. Please call in if you are able. Callback statistics are sent to RAOTC broadcast committee.
If you miss the off-air broadcasts you can listen to the audio file on the RAOTC website.

NEWS FROM THE NORTH WEST
NW Chat & Show Group
The next gathering of the group will be at 2pm on Saturday the 6th of March, in Flora Street West Ulverstone at the sport stadium. You can find it by parking in the carpark closest to the river and look for the veranda with the title of Ulverstone Show Society on it, enter it, and right down at the end of the corridor through two doors you will find us.
As advised by COVID directions commercially produced cake, a 4 pack would be heaps, or a packet of biscuits would be welcome for afternoon tea, and you can take your leftovers home with you. I will have my usual tea/coffee box with me.
Remember this afternoon is open to amateur and partner from anywhere and is just a social gathering, and if there is enough to make it worth while Terry VK7JAI will hopefully have something to show us.
It must also be mentioned not to attend if you have had any recent association with someone who has been overseas, or have cold or flu symptoms.
I hope to catch up with some of you on 6th March.

NEWS FROM THE NORTH
New Northern Repeater
Greg VK7YAD advises that VK7RUN channel 3 is currently active [431.850 input/438.850 output] in the Launceston CBD.
Intended for the support of small form factor low power FM handhelds using shortened antenna, offering unsurpassed penetration into buildings and alleyways, it is within 2km of the CBD and serves to facilitate message passing between HAMs out and about during these socially distant times ... but without the social distractions of equipment drawing attention perhaps for the wrong reasons.
For the present time it may also be found on occasion passing Brandmeister Talk Group 91 [Worldwide ENGLISH] traffic as FM {not DMR} during testing, however this is a one way process, RUN-3 does not pass the FM traffic back to the DMR network.
It has been operational for sometime however a faulty power supply caused some early teething problems which now seem to have been overcome ... put it in your receive scan group, give it a try and see what it offers.
VK7RUN-2 [438.825MHz out] continues, as it has for many months now, to broadcast Brandmeister DMR traffic, Talk Group 91 Time Slot 2 Color Code 1, but at low level for continued site testing.
VK7RUN is actually a set of 3 different repeaters, RUN-3 and RUN-2 are active presently in different ways, RUN-1 is under test presently but there may be a shuffle of services between them as time progresses.
Reception reports, questions or comments to VK7RUN(at)yahoo.com.

Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club Incorporated
As this news goes to air a number of NTARC members will be recovering from their considerable efforts at the Equine event held yesterday at Sassafras. We should be able to provide you with a rundown of how things went in next weekâ€Ös news.
In the meantime, we hand over now to President Idris VK7ZIR to bring you up to speed on events held at the Tech night at the club room on Wednesday 24th February.
“It was a relatively quiet night for unknown reasons, but everyone got into top gear as the evening progressed. Colin VK7ZCF arrived with the wind generator from Mt Arthur, removed on the last trip because of no output. Colin found the fault to be on the controller module so a replacement was ordered and landed yesterday, hence the appearance at the Tech night. The unit uses a three phase permanent magnet alternator, the output of which is converted to 12V DC by said controller module. On dismantling the nacelle, Colin detected a brown smell and an inspection revealed a vital component had been converted to charcoal! The generator will be returned to the mountain once repaired and tested. Whilst the body has been very weathered by the elements, it has given good service over the past few years. It will be joined by a new, identical unit so we will have some diversity in that area. Thanks to Colin for his expertise and for giving us an overview of its operation.
A Discord session was running for those unable to attend and Andrew VK7DW was monitoring 80m with Nic VK7WW as net controller.
The main discussion group covered many subjects, notably the local history of AWA with many members having been associated with the company over the years. Our Ebenezer VK7AT is possibly one of the few AWA technicians left from that era. He has many stories to tell of his employment and of some of the humorous characters he worked with, and the many moves the local company made around Launceston.
Bernie VK7BR made his delicious sandwiches for supper, thanks Bernie.
As I said, a quiet but most enjoyable evening, so until next time.
73 Idris VK7ZIRâ€
Thanks for that report Idris. With Colinâ€Ös discovery of charcoal within the wind generatorâ€Ös nacelle, maybe we should consider converting the generator to steam operation!
We now hand over to Nic VK7WW to give you an update in relation to the unofficial Testnet and Technet session also held on that night.
“The TestNet on 3580 at 7pm - three stations were on the TestNet, Peter VK7ZPE, Rick VK7HBR, Phil VK7ZPD and Nic VK7WW. Peter came on to test changes in his antenna and it has not only made improvements to his signal strength, but also reduced the local noise considerably. Nic continued testing an upgrade in power on his home-brew from 40 milliwatt to now 160 milliwatts AM transmitter. This time it was working! Reports were not that good with QRP at this time of night 7:15pm - still daylight!...but later tests after the TechNet were much better.
The TechNet as VK7TAZ followed at 7:30pm local time on 3.567 with 11 stations and Nic VK7WW as net controller.
A small group on all nets this evening, including Discord - probably because it was a holiday for the Launceston Cup!
â—¦ VK3HBR Rick, is particularly interested in the development of Nicâ€Ös AM transmitter.
â—¦ VK7ALB Peter, has received his second parcel of GI7BTs from Russia and will start building his linear amplifier soon. He mentioned Drew Diamondâ€Ös “TQC Monitor†which he thought might be useful for Nic. (Nic has discovered what seems to be a heat problem with his rig - it ‘jumps 10khz higherâ€Ö for no reason at all).
â—¦ VK7HJB James, in St Helens called in again with an excellent signal. James made comments about the various software operating systems; and, asked questions about QSL cards from a novice perspective.
â—¦ (This brought a wave of comments of systems from the past: Sco-Unix, turbo-basic, Linux, MS Basic, COBOL, Chip-8 machine code, the DEC Company and others, that are no longer around!); and
â—¦ VK3MKE Keith, called in adding comments about propagation and signal reports.
Thanks Paul VK7KPA for hosting Discord and Phil VK7ZPD - with 7 stations logged-in. On line topics and photos included:
â—¦ An old QSL card from the previous VK7WW - Charles in Bridport, now Silent Key; and
â—¦ Nicâ€Ös QRP ‘enhancedâ€Ö AM transmitters.
A big hello to all who also listen in, but canâ€Öt transmit; and, those who listen to us on SDRs around the world via the Internet, wherever you may be!
This is Nic VK7 Whisky Whisky aka (Double Scotch), on behalf of the Northern Tasmania Amateur Radio Club, now Signing Clear.
FUTURE EVENTS
TestNet and TechNet session – Wednesday 3rd March, there will again be a TestNet, hosted by Nic VK7WW, at 1900 hrs (7.00) on 3.580 MHz for any stations wishing to test their homebrew transmitters, repaired equipment, new acquisitions etc. Nic is able to accommodate SSB, AM and CW transmissions and is always happy to hear from any station wishing to utilise the net. Nic VK7WW also hosts the TechNet session which follows on at 1930 hrs, (7.30 pm) on 3.567MHz. Please note these corrected frequencies, as I had apparently managed to transpose them in earlier broadcasts.
Tech Night – Wednesday 10th March at the NTARC Club rooms 19:30 hours until whenever. Continuous tea and coffee will be available, although a gold coin donation for the evening, to help defray expenses, would be appreciated. DATV Experimenter's Night
Last Wednesday was a special DATV Experimenter's Night presentation with an in depth look at the recent digital contact between VK7MO and ZL3RC on 10GHz.
Hosted by Justin VK7TW and Rex VK7MO - we started with an introduction of Roger ZL3RC who joined via Zoom from ZL.
Rex went through some of the mode details.
Roger then went through the Hepburn charts for the days of the contacts and locations at Charleston and Nine Mile on the West coast of New Zealand which is a 3 hour drive from where Roger lives over an alpine area of ZL.
Rex went through his setup in his neighbour's garden and then with Roger then went through the different Q65 modes they tried and the results and changing conditions along with audio recordings of Q65 tones and the attempt at an unsuccessful SSB contact.
Rex then showed an analysis of the ionosondes from Hobart airport over the days of the contacts indicating strong ducting between 1000 and 1200m.
Rex then went through all the Q65 contacts and modes to compare the different modes and possible advantages of the different bandwidths, tone spacings and conditions.
We finished up with questions via YouTube chat and the local repeater.
A huge thank you to Roger ZL3RC and Rex VK7MO and congratulations.
The presentation is available on the REAST YouTube channel.
