Contest News
John Moyle Memorial Field Day
Just to remind everybody that the John Moyle field day is coming up next weekend the 20th-21st March 2021 and will run from UTC 0100 on the Saturday to 0059 on the Sunday. The contest is open to all VK, ZL and P2 stations.
There are a number of categories and they cover portable stations and home stations with the following options.
a) 24 or 6 hour;
b) Phone, CW, Digital or All modes;
c) HF, VHF/UHF or All Bands.
The contest is divided into 3-hour blocks. Stations can be reworked every block. This can work well for example if you work a station in the last 15mins of a block you can work them 16 minutes later. This makes it easier to plan your time to maximise the contacts with the smallest amount of time so worth thinking about for the busy operators amongst us.
As the points are calculated on distance it is important that you have your 6-digit maidenhead grid locator available for exchange. This can be obtained several ways such as app on a smartphone or via the web such as using https://www.levinecentral.com/ham/grid_square.php
Why not set aside some time to exchange some numbers with those that will be out and about, even if you stay home. The John Moyle field day is a little different than other field days as you can operate on HF is that is your interest. Suitable logging software makes the task of keeping track of rework times and point score. Here are a few options such as VKCL, VK5DJ and many others. This also makes the job of sending your log in an easy task. On VHF / UHF a good spot to checkout will be the usual simplex channels on 6M, 2M, 70cm and 23cm. For those with SSB try the usual XX.150 on USB.
Let’s see VK7 on the results sheet this year!
Hope to hear you out and about.

NEWS FROM THE NORTH
New Northern Repeater
Greg VK7YAD advises that VK7RUN channel 3 is currently active [431.850 input/438.850 output] in the Launceston CBD.
Intended for the support of small form factor low power FM handhelds using shortened antenna, offering unsurpassed penetration into buildings and alleyways, it is within 2km of the CBD and serves to facilitate message passing between HAMs out and about during these socially distant times ... but without the social distractions of equipment drawing attention perhaps for the wrong reasons.
For the present time it may also be found on occasion passing Brandmeister Talk Group 91 [Worldwide ENGLISH] traffic as FM {not DMR} during testing, however this is a one way process, RUN-3 does not pass the FM traffic back to the DMR network.
It has been operational for sometime however a faulty power supply caused some early teething problems which now seem to have been overcome ... put it in your receive scan group, give it a try and see what it offers.
VK7RUN-2 [438.825MHz out] continues, as it has for many months now, to broadcast Brandmeister DMR traffic, Talk Group 91 Time Slot 2 Color Code 1, but at low level for continued site testing.
VK7RUN is actually a set of 3 different repeaters, RUN-3 and RUN-2 are active presently in different ways, RUN-1 is under test presently but there may be a shuffle of services between them as time progresses.
Reception reports, questions or comments to VK7RUN@yahoo.com.

Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club Incorporated
Tech Night – Wednesday 10th March – This event occurred as scheduled although President Idris VK7ZIR reports that it was a relatively quiet night, as these events go, predominantly given over to chat and of course supper. He does however tell us that the crew did manage to mount the large TV on the wall. Elsewhere, Nic VK7WW was on the microphone as usual, running first the TestNet, followed by the TechNet, on 80 Meters, so we hand over now to him to let all know what transpired on air.
The TestNet on 3580 at 7pm - There were three stations on the TestNet to assist Nic testing his home-brew 80m AM transmitter at different modulation settings.
• Phil VK7ZPD
• Dave VK2CQ...and;
• Rick VK7HBR.
Conditions were very good and further improved throughout the evening.
The TechNet as VK7TAZ followed at 7:30pm local time on 3.567 with 10 stations for The Northern Tasmania Amateur Radio Club (NTARC)
• VK3MKE Keith described an Arduino based vfo he built for his Codan marine radio to put it on 80m LSB.
• VK7ALB Peter, has been “re-feedingö his loop antenna to get the main lobe in a different direction. Comparisons made between his loop and Zepp antennas.
• VK7HBR Rick, tells us how he is assisting Peter VK7ZPE with peaking audio settings. Rick also wants to make improvements to his own antenna system.
• VK7ZPD Phil, has built a heavy duty balun for his antenna.
• VK7KPA Paul, described technical details to control his Danfoss fridge....and;
• VK7ZPE Peter called in to give a couple of reports before heading to the Technical Night at the Clubrooms.
Nic, VK7WW, as net control, thought he had fixed the frequency “jumpingö problem in his IC721A, but in the last over of the net, the fault re-appeared! DHANG! ....and you never know who is listening! “The Mayor of Caramutö Ron VK3VBI sent a text to Peter VK7ALB offering to buy the faulty rig for $50! The cheek of it! - ALL IN GOOD FUN THOUGH...HA!
Thanks Paul VK7KPA for hosting Discord assisted with Phil VK7ZPD - with 8 stations logged-in
On line topics and photos included:
• AM Series modulator circuit and photo of Nic’s 80m 2.5 watt rig.
• Phil’s 64:1 UNUN (Balun 50 ohm to 3kohm) and;
• MOST IMPORTANTLY! From Peter VK7PD a link to a YouTube presentation. Search for: “REAST ACMA Proposed Licence Changesö Forum 3rd March 2021. This is most important to ALL Radio Amateurs!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0DNwD1ybVE
Thank you to all who joined the Nets and, those who listen to us on HF, Discord ...and SDRs around the world via the Internet, wherever you may be!
This is Nic VK7 Whisky Whisky aka (Double Scotch), on behalf of the Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club, now Signing Clear.
