2021 WIA Winter VHF and Above Winter Field Day

This weekend is Winter VHF/UHF field day. We hope you have been making lots of contacts with VHF and above stations.

If you are listening to this broadcast on Sunday morning there is still some time to make contacts up until 0100UTC or 11:00am local.

The field day is aimed at VHF and up to the best places to listen for activity would be 52.525, 146.500, 439.000 and 1296.150 on FM, and of course the usual SSB frequencies of 50.150, 144.150, 432.150 are always worth a listen or a call. Knowing your current grid square is a requirement for logging, so perhaps do some google earthing or use one of the many apps that will let you know your 6 digit grid square.

Please remember to put your logs in before midnight on Monday 12th July 2021.

It has again been a very quiet week on the news front, in actual fact we have no new news. Since there was no Tech night held this week we can move straight into upcoming and future events.

UPCOMING EVENTS

TECH NIGHT – Wednesday 30th June at the NTARC Club rooms, 19:30 hours until whenever. Continuous tea and coffee will be available, although again, a gold coin donation for the evening would be appreciated.

SLOW MORSE COURSE – Wednesday 30th June. Your host and teacher is Nic VK7WW. Frequencies and times are the same as were used by Nic for the previous TestNet and TechNet. And if you have forgotten what they were, here they are, 1900 hrs to 1930 hrs on 3.580 MHz and then at 1930hours through to about 2030 on 3.567MHz.

So why not tune in and give it a try. By the end of each week, between Morse Course Sessions, participants may have learned 12 characters. Then it’s time to practice them on air.

Nic will be explaining “how to have a contactö and the procedures and protocols. For those who may want some extra help, this website is reported as being very good. www.morsecodeclassnet.com

FUTURE EVENTS – Saturday 28 August, Equine Endurance ride, Santarena Park, Scottsdale. Plenty of warning to help out on this ride. Further information as it comes to hand.

COFFEE MORNINGS – currently held every Friday in the NTARC Club rooms. Catch up time is from 10.00 am to noon and we look forward to seeing you all.

These coffee events in the past have been normally a good opportunity to collect your QSL cards. We currently have no cards awaiting collection.

Please demonstrate your appreciation of all the effort that goes into operating the club and its facilities and other services we provide by joining us at these sessions, enjoying the company, coffee and the cake and leaving a gold coin or two, or even a small bank note, in the jar to assist in our on-going operations. I don’t know of any other venue in Launceston where you can get endless coffee, tea and eats for a donation of this miniscule amount.

FINALLY – A reminder to all members that if you have any items of news you would like added to our weekly roundup, no matter how trivial, then please email me at the following address ntarc.emails(at)gmail.com, all items to be received no later than 17:00 on the Friday prior to the Broadcast.

Your continued cooperation in this regard will be greatly appreciated.

We will bring you all such contributions next Sunday morning.

73, Yvonne VK7FYMX, Secretary NTARC Inc

DATV Experimenter's Night

We started the DATV night with something a little different - Steve VK7OO started with a tribute to his Mum Pat VK2JPA. Pat was very well known in NSW and recently became Silent Key at the age of 91. Pat bought up five kids and was very interested in what her boys did and ended up very involved in many aspects of amateur radio in NSW which is attested by the many certificates and memberships of ARNSW, WICEN, Gladesville Amateur TV, ALARA and many other groups. Thanks Steve.

Steve then went on to give viewers a view of the New Zealand made in-road sensors that are used by Hobart City Council. This was a view inside these parking sensors - two lithium batteries, infrared sensors, PIC controller, magnetic sensor, LIPD 433MHz transceiver and PCB antenna. The unit draws 2 micro amps when asleep and lasts more than 12 months.

We then showed the latest SSTV images from the ISS received by Justin VK7TW and Steve described his simplified SDR arrangement with SSTV that he has been using to receive the images from the ISS and for his 20m SSTVCam.

https://www.spaceflightsoftware.com/ARISS_SSTV/index.php

We thank Trent VK7HRS who sent through a reference to the in-development Cariboulabs SDR hat for RaspberryPi - https://www.crowdsupply.com/cariboulabs/cariboulite

CaribouLite gives two Tx/Rx SDR channels: (1) 30-6000 MHz, and (2) Sub-1GHz. On the software side, Raspberry Pi’s high-level APIs like Soapy / GNU Radio, etc. are fully supported, through which the HAT’s complete feature-set can be accessed.

Justin then went into his latest dumpster dive and we presented a segment on Recover, Recycle, Reuse session and there were many ditched hospital drip pumps and Justin showed the complete unit and then the recovered useful items from them. This included a IEC mains cable, stepper motor, battery pack, SD card, springs, toothed belts, optical encoders, large LCD matrix screen, etc.

Peter VK7PD down in Hobart from the North and James came along to the night and Peter showed his 23, 13, 9 & 3cm transverter, IF Rig (FT-817), Kuhne & SG Labs transverters and Power amplifiers arrangement that he will be using with VK7DW and VK7JAM on the field day next weekend. Thanks Peter and James.

We finished up by reminding people of the VHF and above field day and the future presentation nights and finished with an outline of the videos for our RF viewers.

The video is available from the REAST YouTube Channel.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZZTZpVOU3kU

This week we will have some interesting electronics which assists Bee Keeping, many different forms of RFID tags, some more dumpster diving with some very interesting linear actuators, magazine reviews and some more experiments with GNU Radio Companion. See you then.

We get underway from 7:30pm in the Queen’s Domain clubrooms.

Keep an eye on the REAST Facebook Events for more details. Why not come up to the Queens Domain COVID-safe clubrooms and see what we get up to.

And a reminder that we go out on RF on 445.5MHz DVB-T 7MHz Standard Definition. So, if you have a TV, Set-top box or USB DTV Dongle that you can tune and scan 445.5MHz and you can see the Queens Domain, then you have a good chance of receiving the DATV Experimenter's Night Signal.

Look out for VK7OTC. We also stream the nights on the REAST YouTube channel.

New WSPR beacon rowing the Atlantic Ocean!

New start for Guirec.... After he rowed from the Canaries islands to the Caribbean - St Barth in a rowing boat. The second leg is from the U.S. to France and back home to Brittany!

Guirec said - I am so happy to begin this mythical adventure, I admit having shouted with joy as I rowed away in the fog, the result of an exhilarating feeling of being where I should be, even if I know it’s gonna be hard, I am ready!

So here we are, friends !! We will have to swallow miles at arm's length before seeing the familiar coasts of my adored Brittany take shape !!

On board the row boat is a small experimental beacon WSPR 1w on 10 MHz....callsign is F4GOH made by Anthony F4GOH and Maurice F6CIU from RadioAmateurs de Penn ar Bed , radio club association.
