Winter Luncheon
On Saturday the 21st of August , the Club held its winter luncheon at the Light House Hotel in Ulverstone. We had a large turnout to enjoy a scrumptious meal and desserts , the biggest challenge of the day was for oldies like me ,adorning the party hats, much laughter and chatter revolved around the items Social Coordinator Kirsty brought for the occasion , everyone enjoyed themselves, and no one went home hungry.
--------------------------------
Paton Park Scout Camp , Final Antenna upgrade.
The new Triband 6m, 2m and 70cm Diamond base antenna and HF OCF dipole antenna have arrived, so on Saturday the 28th August weather permitting, Club members are having a working bee.
This is to mount the new Tri- bander at the top of the 20m tower, as well as replacing the worn out fan dipole with an OCF dipole antenna and replace the coaxes for both antennas.
This will hopefully reduce maintenance on the facility, as well as replace antennas that have been up over 20 years and are not functioning very well.
This will allow the Scouts to use the HF or Dual band radios donated by club members at either the Scout Camp, or the Scout Headquarters in Ulverstone.

Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club Incorporated
www.ntarc.net
As this news goes to air a number of NTARC members will be recovering from having spent yesterday at Scottsdale, providing Safety Comms for the North East Equine Endurance Club, Jolly Lette Memorial ride, held at Santarena Park. Hopefully the weather was kind to them and all went well. We will bring you an update on how things went for them in next week's news.
In the meantime we provide you with a brief rundown on how things went last Wednesday night in relation to the Club tech session, so it is over to Idris VK7ZIR;
"A cool night last Wednesday didn't hamper the attendance of a good roll up of members. Fire was well and truly burning brightly, urn on, biscuits and fruit cake out for all to enjoy. Lots of chatter about current and future projects. Some items of interest were brought along for a bit of show and tell. A very casual and enjoyable evening had by all. So until our next Club tech session that's all folks
73, Idris VK7ZIR"
Thanks Idris for that update, great to see attendance still up there on these cool nights and with spring looming up and hopefully warmer weather, more will join you on these nights.
Just a reminder though to all attending the club rooms that we have the Check in TAS app at our club rooms. By registering and using the Check in TAS app we are complying with the Public Health Directions by enabling our members to self – check in at the club room.
This information is stored with the Tasmanian Government for contract tracing if required. The QR code is up and running for members to utilize, with the QR code poster at the sign in table. Members are still able to register their attendance at the club by signing in manually in the attendance book if you are unable or you choose not to register using the Check in TAS app. Please note though that you must use one of those two methods. You do not have an option of not registering. That is a matter of law.

Community Radio Station Technical Support
Being an amateur radio operator gives you some unique experiences, knowledge and skills. Ranging from operating computers & computer control, to integration and interfacing, through to knowing and applying radio transmission theory, radio frequency measurement, design and construction; it is an end-end skill set that is highly valued in many technical circles.
These are skills that are very valuable to a Community Radio station.
There are over 450 Community Radio stations operating around Australia, including 14 in Tasmania. Most operate through volunteer presenters and technical assistants who give their time and knowledge as a community service to enhance and reflect the diversity within our community. For more information take a look the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia (CBAA) website
https://www.cbaa.org.au/.
Are you interested in taking your hobby of amateur radio to a new level and assisting Community Radio stations in a technical capacity? Contributing your skills, knowledge and experience to assisting organisations that are providing an important service to the community.
Keeping a Community Radio station on the air 24/7/365 is not a small undertaking and involves many different roles and responsibilities. On the technical side there is much computer based work like scheduling audio playout on automation systems, establishing and maintaining computer networks, and building and imaging PCs. It also involves audio, computer and communications interfacing and integration, equipment maintenance and occasionally high power radio frequency engineering work.
Technorama is a national support organisation assisting Community Radio technical volunteers. They run training programs and provide other services and their website is worth a look.

REAST - R2 Repeater Link Update
From the REAST Repeater coordinator we hear an update about the R2 linking.
Please note the new permanent link arrangements between the Domain and Mt Nelson repeaters. VK7RAD 2m repeater on 146.7 is now permanently linked to VK7RDS 70cm repeater on Mt Nelson.
VK7RDS operates on 439.750MHz with a minus -7MHz input (note the new input frequency of 432.750MHz). No tone is required, however a 141.3Hz tone output is provided for those wanting to mute the tail and ident.
The VK7RDS repeater provides good coverage over greater Hobart and down to the Kingborough and Channel areas. VK7RDS operates at 50w into a Diamond X-50 vertical, with a permanent 2m gateway to the Domain. We are hopeful this will increase coverage to those that struggle with the Domain.
For those previously using VK7RDS to monitor 23cms, can now find this temporarily on the Snug Tiers 146.850 repeater courtesy of Brian VK7BW.
Feedback and reports are welcomed.

REAST Repeater Coordinator.

DATV Experimenter's Night
We started the night with Richard VK7ZBX and Justin VK7TW reviewing the current logs uploaded for the Remembrance Day Contest - it was great to see VK7 with 51 logs uploaded. People have until Sunday to upload their logs.
Richard then took the audience through the substantial progress made by Richard and Murray VK7ZMS on the 1.8M 10GHz dish build with Sun and Moon noise measurements at 12.2dB and 1 dB respectively which is a great result. This was accompanied by great pictures.
We then reviewed an interesting antenna idea which was a 6m loop from an Aluminium folding chair.
https://www.facebook.com/groups/388985131912074/?hoisted_section_header_type=recently_seen&multi_permalinks=1012638012880113
We then moved to one for the conspiracy theorists amongst us and thanks to Ben and Justin for some interesting interwebs morsels starting with a home EMF defence device that looks like a copper heat sink at US$68. A quick search revealed a similar item at Jaycar sold as RaspberryPi heat sinks at $7.95 for two!
https://www.jaycar.com.au/copper-heatsink-for-raspberry-pi-pk-2/p/HH8584
We then moved to a 5G faraday cage for your WIFI router - interesting idea to stop 5G from getting into your wifi router - HIHI...
Lee VK7LEE then joined us with his recently built impressive FlowerPot 2/70cm Antenna and he took the audience through it's build. Thanks Lee.
Justin then took the audience through the new PTZ Cameras for the Studio and main room. These are ex-CCTV cameras from around Hobart - huge thank you to Anders Marchant and JetTech. Justin is using an Arduino controller to send PTZ commands to control the camera with the Pelco-D Protocol and an RS485 shield and a homebrew button shield.
Justin took the audience through the code in the Arduino integrated development environment. Justin demonstrated a neat little feature in the code where if you are zoomed in then it adjusts the pan and tilt speed to slow them down to slow the pan and tilt functions.
We finished with a reminder of future presentation nights.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hprVbB0lGCo
We have a fortnight break until the next DATV Experimenter's night as this week is a presentation night.
See you in a fortnight.
