Silent Key
Harvey Skegg VK7HK SK
Harvey Skegg, VK7HK, passed away peacefully at home aged 79 on Christmas Eve.
He was first licensed about 1974 and also holds the callsigns VK1HK and VJ7N, a scientific licence he used for testing various types of repaired radio equipment.
Harvey had a varied career starting as a Tech with the PMG, then in the computer industry, owned and ran 2 supermarkets with Meg in Beaconsfield then Wards Gift Shop in Hobart. He then worked for the State Government in traffic management and later in water pollution investigation.
He also tried his hand at Real Estate for a number of years.
Harvey retired early due to ill health and had been battling various health issues for many years.
In the 1980â€Ös Harvey ran a business from home, Hobby Electronics, buying and selling new and used radio gear.
He ran Amateur Radio Novice courses through Adult Education in Hobart and many VK7â€Ös got their licence thanks to Harvey.
Harvey was my best mate for 44 years and we had many good times with the hobby. Friday radio nights at Harveyâ€Ös house in Geilston Bay was an institution.
He is survived by his wife Meg, son Timon, daughter Jo-anne and 4 grandchildren.
Harvey will be sorely missed.
Vale Harvey
Ron VK7RM
Harvey was also involved with the now infamous Broadband Over Powerline (BPL) trial in Hobart. The trial was offered in Mt Nelson and Harvey saw this as an opportunity to see and test the technology up close.
I had the privilege of working closely with Harvey on the testing both egress and ingress to demonstrate how fragile and vulnerable the technology actually was.
The report of the ingress and ACMA testing are still available on the REAST website.
https://www.reast.asn.au/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/VK7_BPL_RF_Susceptibility_Tests.pdf
https://www.reast.asn.au/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/ACMA_Measurement_Day_Report_20070111__Final_.pdf
Ron VK7RM made the comment that Harvey was very relieved when the BPL trial finally came to an end and he went and bought a plasma tv to find they were many times worse than BPL…HIHI.
Harvey was philosophical about the BPL trial as he was with most things in life and this taught me to ensure there was some balance in the testing and reporting of the BPL trial and I have Harvey to thank for that.

Justin VK7TW
[Editor] Harveyâ€Ös funeral was held last Friday and was a wonderful celebration of Harveyâ€Ös life and was very well attended by the amateur fraternity.

Happy Hogmanay to all! Well, actually it is the second day of the New Year but better late than never. Hopefully you were appropriately first footed by tall dark strangers, sank a respectfully moderate number of drams and have now on hand a potentially useful pile of coal clumps, environmentally unfriendly as they may now be regarded. In the words of that traditional Scots toast, “Lang mae yer lums reek!”
Probably the hardest part of the new year though is having to remember it is now 2022 and inscribe that fact on all documents etc. It does take a bit of getting used to and is something that annual practice doesnâ€Öt seem to make any easier. That said, hopefully 2022 will be kinder to us all but it is not looking that promising with the arrival and the increasing numbers of Omicron variant.
On with the news. It is still the holiday season, and the Club room has yet to reopen, so not much has changed, if anything. So, once again this weekâ€Ös offering must be largely a repeat of coming events.
First though, to all those members who have not yet paid their 2022 subs, a reminder that you
officially became listed as unfinancial on the register yesterday, the 1st January. If you are in that boat, then this might be an appropriate time to remedy that situation. In case you have forgotten, NTARCâ€Ös 2022 membership fees are $40.00 for a Full voting member and $5 additional for each Family member that the voting member wishes to add to his or her primary membership.
If you are not a member of NTARC please consider joining. If you have been a member in the past but have let that membership lapse for any reason, please consider rejoining. Why not pop into the clubroom when we re-open on Friday 7th January, during coffee hours and collect an application or download one from our website. You will be made most welcome.
www.ntarc.net.au
If club membership is not your cup of tea, we fully understand. In those circumstances, perhaps you might care to make a direct donation to our repeater fund, rather than pay a yearly subscription. If so, we would be happy to receive your contribution, either in person at a club meeting or coffee morning, or by post to PO BOX 275 Launceston 7250. Any donation will gladly be accepted. All donations will be officially receipted and noted accordingly against the repeater projects.
UPCOMING EVENTS
January General meeting – Saturday 8th January 2022. Meeting to commence at 14:00 hours (2.00pm). Afternoon tea will follow.
Club Tech night – Wednesday 12th January. Held at the NTARC Club rooms, 19:30 hours until whenever.
TestNet and TECHNET – Wednesday 19th January. TestNet/CW course on 3580 from 7pm till 7.30pm….and a TECHNET on 3567 from 7.30pm till about 8.30pm. Your host for the evening will again be Nic VK7WW.
FUTURE EVENTS - 2022
Annual General meeting – the Annual General Meeting of NTARC will take place on Wednesday 9th February 2022 at the NTARC Club Rooms, Rocherlea Scout Hall, Archer Street Rocherlea commencing at 19:30 hours (7.30 pm).
Business at the AGM will consist of confirmation of the Minutes of the 2021 AGM, then reception and consideration of reports from the Committee, including the Treasurerâ€Ös report and reports from our various managers and coordinators. This will be followed by the election of officer bearers and committee person for 2022. The meeting will then consider any item of special business for which the requisite notice has been received by the closing date of Friday 4th February.
All current office holder and committee positions fall vacant at the AGM. Nominations for each office bearer and the Committee member are invited and should be made in writing to the Secretary, along with the signatures of the Nominator, Seconder and that of the member nominated. Appointments will also be required to the positions of Internal Auditor and Public Officer.
Please note that for your convenience a nomination form will be available from the NTARC club room from Friday 7th January 2022, our first day of opening for the coming year, with nominations closing off at COB Friday 4th February.
Members are reminded that they will need to have paid their 2022 renewal subscription before the meeting commences at 19:30 hours (7.30 pm) to be able to vote at the Annual General meeting. Similarly, they will need to have paid their 2022 subscription before they can be nominated or nominate or second someone for office, as only financial members can exercise those privileges.
The AGM will be followed by the February General meeting.
It would be appreciated if all the NTARC Coordinators could start to think about their yearly report. Thank you to those that have already forwarded their report, it is very much appreciated. Just a subtle hint here to our Education, JOTA, QSL and Repeater Coordinators it would be greatly appreciated if you could put fingers to the keyboard and forward your report as soon as possible to the Secretary. Please also remember that your report needs to cover the reporting period 1 January 2021 to 31 December 2021, nothing prior or since.
COFFEE MORNINGS – normally held every Friday in the NTARC Club rooms but we are in recess until Friday 7th January 2022. Catch up time will be from 10.00 am to noon and we look forward to seeing you all when we resume on that date.
These coffee events represent a good opportunity to collect your QSL cards. We currently have cards awaiting collection, so why not pop in and check the QSL box and join us for a cuppa and chat.
Just a friendly reminder, please demonstrate your appreciation of all the effort that goes into operating the club, its facilities and the other services we provide, especially in these abnormal and very trying times, enjoying the company, coffee, biscuits and cake, by leaving a gold coin or two, or even a small bank note, in the jar to assist in our on-going operations.
Christmas and New Year closure – in case you missed that last item or have forgotten, the NTARC Club rooms reopen on Friday 7th January 2022.
FINALLY – A reminder to all members that if you have any items of news you would like added to our weekly roundup, no matter how trivial, then please email me at the following address news(at)ntarc.net all items to be received no later than 17:00 on the Friday prior to the Broadcast.
Your continued cooperation in this regard will be greatly appreciated.
We will bring you all such contributions next Sunday morning.
73, Yvonne VK7FYMX, Secretary NTARC Inc

DATV Experimenter's Night
Our DATV Experimenterâ€Ös Nights continue throughout January on Wednesday nights from 7:30pm and now for a summary of what we covered at our last DATV night for 2021.
We started with a look at the ISS SSTV images from Richard VK7ZBX and Justin VK7TW.
https://www.spaceflightsoftware.com/ARISS_SSTV/index.php
We both took the audience through the hardware and software setups they use.
We went through the process and website for uploading the images to the ARISS SSTV website.
https://www.spaceflightsoftware.com/ARISS_SSTV/submit.php
We then showed a wonderful website showing the timeline for the deployment of the James Webb Telescope.
https://www.jwst.nasa.gov/content/webbLaunch/whereIsWebb.html
We then went through a description of the operating station in the DATV studio with an ICOM IC-705 connected via USB to a GPD MicroPC with the IC-705 driver for both AF & CAT Control via Comm 3 & 4 and we need to select the CI-V one (Com3). The software was MMSSTV, Gpredict with Hamlib and rigctl from command line. Justin found he needed to create a 145.800 V/V transponder setting which seems there is something funny with the IC-705 implementation. We were using the Collinear vertical on the club roof.
Right on 08:07pm the ISS made a low 20 deg elevation pass across the south. We got a partial decode and it lost sync and restarted the picture and so the picture was split in two due to the repeater ident desensing the receiver and loosing sync and we had auto restarted not checked.
There was a second decode and Steve VK7OO showed how the phase issue with the second image can be partially corrected.
Steve made a good point that it is very simple to receive the SSTV images from the ISS with just a radio with a wide passband (~25kHz), and therefore you donâ€Öt need doppler shift correction a computer running MMSSTV and a ÂĽ wave ground plane vertical antenna.
We then talked abut the latest 3.4GHz antenna testing with Alan VK7KAJ, Steve VK7OO, Richard VK7ZBX, Brian VK7BW and Justin VK7TW who were all getting strong signals off Mt Wellington. 5/9+10. There are two others VK7ZMS and VK7HH and therefore we only need two more to have nine on 9cms.
We reminded the audience of the Summer VHF & Microwave Field Day from 0100 UTC Saturday January 15 through 0059 UTC Sunday 16 January and encouraged everyone to become involved.
We finished with some reminders of future events.
A huge Happy New Year to all and stay safe in 2022 from the DATV Experimenting crew.
We are operating through-out the holiday period and next week we have some more interesting tests you can do on your Coax with the NanoVNA, more SSTV images from the ISS, 3.4GHz experiments and much more.
We go out on RF on 445.5MHz DVB-T 7MHz Standard Definition. So, if you have a TV, Set-top box or USB DTV Dongle that you can tune and scan 445.5MHz and you can see the Queens Domain, then you have a good chance of receiving the DATV Experimenter's Night Signal. Look out for VK7OTC. We also stream the nights on the REAST YouTube channel.

Contest News
Ross Hull 2022
The first contest in the WIA Contest calendar is the Ross Hull Memorial VHF and Above Contest that runs for all of January 2022 starting 00:00UTC on 1 January 2022 and running through to 23:59UTC on 31 January 2022.
The contest was established in 1950 to honour the memory of the late Ross A. Hull and his pioneering achievements in the study of tropospheric propagation and the development of new equipment techniques for the higher bands.
Entrants may operate on every contest day, but the final score is based on the best seven days nominated by the entrant.
For amateurs with limited operating time, there is also a "Best 2 Days" section.
Each contact scores one point for each 100 km of distance worked. This score is then multiplied by the band multiplier. The total score is the sum of the scores on all bands.
Note on Calculating Distances
You will need to exchange 6 digit Maidenhead locators to get an accurate distance measurement. You can also calculate distances from six-digit Maidenhead locators. Using your favourite maidenhead application.
For more information about maidenheads and the full contest rules take a look at the WIA website.
