VK7 Event News
Meet The Voice 2022

The Meet the Voice event will be going ahead this year on the weekend of the 19-20 March 2022 with the main event happening on the Sunday the 20 March from 11am.

It will be happening at the Ross Caravan Park on the banks of the picturesque Macquarie River.

As in past years attendees are welcome to make a weekend of it and stay at the Caravan Park - bookings are encouraged to ensure you get a space! The BBQs will be fired up on the Sunday for lunch and the presentation of the Meet The Voice Sewing Circle Trophy will be made around 11:00am.

The weekend coincides with the John Moyle Memorial Field Day contest where the focus is on portable operation so, why not bring your portable station along and operate in the John Moyle as well.

There will be a car boot sale so bring along those pre-loved items for sale or give away or barter.

More information will be provided as it comes to hand.

Contest News
John Moyle Memorial Field Day

Just to remind everybody that the John Moyle field day is coming up on the 19th and 20th March 2022 and will run from UTC 0100 on the Saturday to 0059 on the Sunday, yes quite advance warning I know but hopefully you can get it in your diary now.

The contest is open to all VK, ZL and P2 stations.

There are a number of categories and they cover portable stations and home stations with the following options.

a)   24 or 6 hour;

b) Phone, CW, Digital (PSK, Packet or RTTY) or All modes;

c) HF, VHF/UHF or All Bands.

The contest is divided into 3-hour blocks. Stations can be reworked every block. This can work well for example if you work a station in the last 15 mins of a block you can work them 16 minutes later. This makes it easier to plan your time to maximise the contacts with the smallest amount of time so worth thinking about for the busy operators amongst us.

Last year there were 7 logs submitted by VK7â€Ös, letâ€Ös see if we can top that result.

Hope to hear you out and about.

Introducing your new NTARC broadcast reporter stepping into Yvonneâ€Ös shoes as NTARC Secretary. Yvonne is taking a well-earned rest from eleven years as Secretary and five hundred and sixty two Broadcast segments, yes you heard correctly, five hundred and sixty two segments!

I will endeavour to uphold the high standard of reporting we have come to expect.

This Friday morning tea saw a healthy attendance of twenty six members including a visit from Southern member Justin VK7TW, who dropped in for a coffee and a chat.

While we are on the subject of “stepping into peopleâ€Ös shoes”, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Phil VK7ZPD for taking over the hosting of the Wednesday night TechNet session, due to Nic having a previous commitment. A job well done Phil. Nic did leave us a little surprise in the form of a small single transistor Morse code beacon that he had constructed and left running. Itâ€Ös output was a miserly one hundred and twenty odd milli-watts. However it soon became apparent that it was not limited in range, as Tony VK7LTD could receive the beacon in Hobart. This was just the start, as it was soon found that it could be picked up by Software Defined Radios in VK1, 2, 3, 5, 6 and New Zealand! A very good QRP achievement Nic.

2022 Membership renewals –a final reminder notice has been sent to those who havenâ€Öt as yet renewed their 2022 membership. Your membership for 2021 expired on 31 December and your name now appears on the membership register as an unfinancial member. It will remain as such on that register until renewed, or until 30 June, when your name must be removed if your annual subscription remains unpaid at that date.

In the interim, a reminder that NTARCâ€Ös 2022 membership fees are $40.00 for a Full voting member and $5 additional for each Family member that the voting member wishes to add to his or her primary membership.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Club Tech night – Wednesday 23rd February. NTARC Club rooms, 19:30 hours until whenever.

TestNet and TechNet – Wednesday 2nd March. TestNet/CW course on 3580 from 7pm till 7.30pm….and a TechNet on 3567 from 7.30pm till about 8.30pm. Your host for the evening will again be Nic VK7WW.

Coffee Mornings – held every Friday in the NTARC Club rooms. Catch up time is from 10.00 am to noon and we look forward to seeing you all there.

These coffee events represent a good opportunity to collect your QSL cards. We currently have cards awaiting collection, so why not pop in and check the QSL box and join us for a cuppa and chat.

Again a reminder that masks be worn at these sessions but you will be able to remove your mask whilst eating and drinking but it does need to be put back on when finished. A sign has been placed on the screen door reminding all of this requirement.

Equine Endurance Ride - at St. Helens April 2nd-3rd.

Our new Safety Communications Coordinator Roger VK7ARN is helping to organise a new Equine Endurance Ride in the St. Helens area, more information as it becomes available.

FINALLY – A reminder to all members that if you have any items of news you would like added to our weekly roundup, no matter how trivial, then please email them to the Secretary at the following address news(at)ntarc.net all items to be received no later than 17:00 on the Friday prior to the Broadcast.

NEWS FROM THE NORTH WEST
North West Tasmania Amateur Radio Club
Happy 90th Birthday to Bob VK7BY

Bob was born on the 18th February 1932 in Southport Lancashire in England.

He joined the Navy straight out of school at 15yrs old, and spent 30yrs in the Royal Navy, serving in Britain, Malta & Singapore rising to the rank of Chief Petty Officer.

On leaving the Navy he became a teacher for the deaf, they were poached by NSW Education department in 1972, and then moved to Tassie retiring from his teaching role in 1985.

Bob has been a great supporter of JOTA over the years, allowing them to use his large acreage at Rocky Cape and Wynyard for JOTA camps and radio activities.

After being off air for over 5 years due to a non-operating antenna farm that operated from 2m to 160m, new antennas were installed by the club. He now joins the weekly 2m net, and monitors the state-wide link through 70cm Table Cape.

There are plans in place to erect a 20m vertical for Bobâ€Ös favourite band and mode - 20M CW.

Bobâ€Ös body maybe letting him down, but his brain is still sharp, quoting antenna formulas, lengths etc on Ericâ€Ös visits, and always has plenty of tall but true, stories to share re his naval and Amateu activities.

Bobâ€Ös wife Maryl advised that Bob plans to spend his birthday with family, and visiting Burnieâ€Ös noteworthy whisky distillery.

A very Happy 90th Birthday to Bob VK7BY a stalwart of amateur radio, from the NWTARC members.

REAST March Presentation Night

Focus on Foundation Licence Holders Forum

The REAST Committee will be holding a Foundation Licence Focus night on 2nd March 2022 and want to get as many of our new (and old) Foundation Licence holders along as well as our experienced operators to share their collective experiences about getting on the air.

To kick things off we are asking our Foundation Licence holders to come up with a list of 10 key discussion points for the night that Foundation Licensees need to consider to get on the air, things you are finding frustrating, key information sources, places to go, people you can talk with and most importantly the things that are stopping you getting on air, etc.

On the night we will run through these points with experienced amateurs in the room who (hopefully!) will be able to point you in the right direction, put you in touch with Elmers, information, videos, equipment, etc.

So a call out to our Foundation Licence holders - please email reast@reast.asn.au your discussion points, your frustrations, areas you need further information on, concerns, problems getting on air, etc. The questions and comments won't be linked back to a submitter so, don't worry about that. We just want to know what is stopping you getting on the air.

The night is a sharing forum where we try and link inexperience with experience and help get more Foundation Licensees on the air.

Look forward to hearing from you - that email again - reast(at)reast.asn.au.

Hear from you soon.

DATV Experimenter's Night

We started our last Experimenterâ€Ös night with Rex VK7MO taking us through his analysis of receiving the VK3RGI 23cm Beacon from Gippsland over the last week. This included the description of the Ionosonde findings and the possible duct locations. Rex also showed a small device that measures temperature and relative humidity and transmits it via Bluetooth to his iPhone. Rex was thinking that he could use it to try and determine where the ducts could be by driving up to the top of Mt Wellington. Thanks Rex.

Rex and Justin VK7TW then took a look at the article in the latest AR Magazine about Ross Hull and Rex commented that his Father Len VK3LN met Ross Hull during his trip around America in the 1930s. Justin then showed his 1930 ARRL Handbook which was edited by Hand and Hull!

Justin then showed the progress with his Langstone Microwave Transceiver using the Adalm Pluto Development Module. Justin went through the RaspberryPi 4 Control Surface and navigation using a USB Mouse - with thumb wheel here is an alternative Arduino optical encoder emulator. There is a sound card for mic and speaker and you use RaspberryPi I/O pins for PTT and other control signals. This is a Work In Progress

Justin and Richard VK7ZBX then went through an AR Magazine Review with the Front Cover with Martin VK7GN and Lakia VK7LJB and Avia at Huonville Scouts and the Field Day - Photo of VK7TW at New Norfolk.

There was then a review of the Remembrance Day 2021 Report with Top Team - Cronies +1 - VK7ZBX, VK7ZMS & VK7HH on 2932 with emphasis on the scores from second to fifth being 6 points apart!

Justin and Richard then went through the other article in the AR magazine.

Justin then showed the latest Digirig Version: 1.6 which is now RS-232 compatible through solder links inside that enable real RS-232 voltages +/- 3-15V. There are now very nice fabric curly cords that are branded and a Nice Business Card with QR code, Thanks Denis K0TX.

We then did a promo of the March Presentation Night which is a Focus on Foundation Licencees Forum.

This week we will have some more on the Langstone Project, more SOTA awards, Pyranometer, DUBUS Magazine and much more!

We go out on RF on 445.5MHz DVB-T 7MHz Standard Definition. So, if you have a TV, Set-top box or USB DTV Dongle that you can tune and scan 445.5MHz and you can see the Queens Domain, then you have a good chance of receiving the DATV Experimenter's Night Signal. Look out for VK7OTC. We also stream the nights on the REAST YouTube channel.

Aviation Distress Assistance
U-2 pilot assists civilian aircraft in distress call

BEALE AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. – A U-2 Dragon Lady pilot assisted a civilian pilot in distress, Feb. 8, 2022, near Lake Berryessa.

At approximately 9 a.m., a civilian aircraft suffered engine failure over Lake Berryessa. The civilian pilot received radio assistance from Maj. Heatherman, 99th Reconnaissance Squadron (RS) U-2 pilot.

Heatherman was flying a training mission when he picked up a distress call from a civilian aircraft that was experiencing engine trouble over Lake Berryessa and was looking for a place to land.

“I was climbing to altitude on a high sortie and about 20 minutes after takeoff I heard a mayday call from a civilian aircraft that was experiencing engine trouble over Lake Berryessa and was looking for a spot to land,” Heatherman said. “I relayed this call to the supervisor of flying at Beale and to Oakland air traffic control to see if they knew about it.”

After a few minutes, Heatherman received confirmation that Travis AFB Air Traffic Control was coordinating.

“Due to the altitude of the civilian aircraft, Travis AFB was not able to hear or see them on their radar,” Heatherman said. “As a U-2 pilot, I was flying twice as high than most airliners, so I had a very good line of sight with my radios.”

Heatherman was asked to relay radio messages to the civilian aircraft. About 30 minutes after the mayday call, the California Highway Patrol reported that they found the civilian aircraft safely landed in a field near the lake.

“Thankfully the aircraft landed safely in a field with no injuries, and Maj. Heatherman then proceeded on his mission,” said Maj. Dudderar, 1st RS supervisor of flying. “It is not abnormal for pilots to offer assistance to distressed aircraft to different degrees based on the situation. There is a common bond among all pilots, whether military or civilian. We all will lend a hand if we can help in a difficult situation.”
