VK7 Event News
Meet The Voice 2022

The Meet the Voice event will be going ahead this year on the weekend of the 19-20 March 2022 with the main event happening on the Sunday the 20 March from 11am.

It will be happening at the Ross Caravan Park on the banks of the picturesque Macquarie River.

As in past years attendees are welcome to make a weekend of it and stay at the Caravan Park - bookings are encouraged to ensure you get a space! The BBQs will be fired up on the Sunday for lunch and the presentation of the Meet The Voice Sewing Circle Trophy will be made around 11:00am.

The weekend coincides with the John Moyle Memorial Field Day contest where the focus is on portable operation so, why not bring your portable station along and operate in the John Moyle as well.

There will be a car boot sale so bring along those pre-loved items for sale or give away or barter.

More information will be provided as it comes to hand.

Contest News
John Moyle Memorial Field Day

Just to remind everybody that the John Moyle field day is coming up on the 19th and 20th March 2022 and will run from UTC 0100 on the Saturday to 0059 on the Sunday, yes quite advance warning I know but hopefully you can get it in your diary now.

The contest is open to all VK, ZL and P2 stations.

There are a number of categories and they cover portable stations and home stations with the following options.

a)   24 or 6 hour;

b) Phone, CW, Digital (PSK, Packet or RTTY) or All modes;

c) HF, VHF/UHF or All Bands.

The contest is divided into 3-hour blocks. Stations can be reworked every block. This can work well for example if you work a station in the last 15 mins of a block you can work them 16 minutes later. This makes it easier to plan your time to maximise the contacts with the smallest amount of time so worth thinking about for the busy operators amongst us.

Last year there were 7 logs submitted by VK7â€Ös, letâ€Ös see if we can top that result.

Hope to hear you out and about.

Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club Incorporated

www.ntarc.net

Last Wednesday was club tech night, a very diverse and interesting evening, covering items from an old field military valve pin straightener through to a microwave Earth Moon Earth portable system. Over to Idris, VK7ZIR;

“It was a packed program tonight as we got underway after missing three Tech nights because of meetings, AGMs etc. Everyone was enthusiastic with plenty of show-and-tell at hand. Peter VK7KPC showed us the latest addition to his collection of military radio equipment. This was a Field radio Test set model FT2, resplendent in an environmental enclosure with test and straightening sockets for various valves and connection points for interface cables to radios under test. Test results were indicated on a multi-purpose meter. This instrument was in excellent condition and showed little heavy use. Peter connected a Murphy Radio man pack to demonstrate the testing process. Instructions for use were printed on the cover. Thanks Peter.

Next was Ross VK7ALH with three examples from his substantial collection. A SuperMatch antenna coupler from KW Electronics, made in England in the 60s, which included a 300W dummy load and in-built SWR/Power measuring facility. Original binder posts for antenna connection had been replaced with SO239 sockets. All in good condition. Another antenna coupler was a Daiwa CL-66, and lastly a USA made Alba 103 HF transceiver which Ross has restored to a working state. Thanks Ross, what next from your huge collection?

Bill VK7MX had just received a very neat kit for a 5 band SDR transceiver, consisting of two circuit boards with certain surface mount components already soldered, a bag of components and from a different source, a 3D printed plastic case. The circuit boards were a RF part and a main board with IO section. We will watch Billâ€Ös progress with interest.

Stuart VK7FEAT brought along his home brew antenna matcher to be tested with Andreâ€Ö VK7ZABâ€Ös antenna analyser which showed on a graphical display the characteristics of the coupler on each HF band. Stuart also shared his experience with earthing straps on his vehicle.

We then had a presentation from Peter VK7PD which included a videoed interview with Richard VK7ZBX by Hayden VK7HH played on our large screen. Richard has constructed microwave equipment for 10GHz EME experimentation, including a trailer mounted dish antenna, which he demonstrated at the recent REAST Open Day in Hobart. Peter explained about EME or MoonBounce and also mentioned Richardâ€Ös recent long range contact achievements to Europe via the moon. Thank you Peter for a very informative session.

We welcomed several visitors to the Club this evening. Ross who came with Peter VK7PD is hoping to take his licence exam soon. Brendan VK7VIP brought along Adam and Rob, with his service dog Jerry, who are also looking towards Foundation licences, hopefully in the near future.

Kevin VK7KJL wanted to program some radios, but alas, was unable to find suitable software applications for his Alinco DX-70 and Icom IC40S. If anyone can help, Kevin would be delighted.

All the while from the Radio shack we were hearing the melodious tones of Nic VK7WWâ€Ös 127mW QRP Morse beacon on 10MHz. A fitting accompaniment to an enjoyable evening.

73, Idris VK7ZIR”

At this point we would like to thank Lorraine, Norm VK7KTN, Brendan VK7VIP and Peter VK7KPC for an unplanned mini garden make over at the Club Rooms.

REAST March Presentation Night
Focus on Foundation Licence Holders Forum

We will be holding a Foundation Licence Focus night this Wednesday night the 2nd March 2022 and want to get as many of our new (and old) Foundation Licence holders along as well as our experienced operators to share their collective experiences about getting on the air.

To kick things off we are asking our Foundation Licence holders to come up with a list of key discussion points for the night that Foundation Licensees need to consider to get on the air, things you are finding frustrating, key information sources, places to go, people you can talk with and most importantly the things that are stopping you getting on air, etc.

On the night we will run through these points with experienced amateurs in the room who (hopefully!) will be able to point you in the right direction, put you in touch with Elmers, information, videos, equipment, etc.

So a call out to our Foundation Licence holders - please email reast(at)reast.asn.au your discussion points, your frustrations, areas you need further information on, concerns, problems getting on air, etc. The questions and comments won't be linked back to a submitter so, don't worry about that. We just want to know what is stopping you getting on the air.

The night is a sharing forum where we try and link inexperience with experience and help get more Foundation Licensees on the air.

Look forward to hearing from you - that email again - reast(at)reast.asn.au and see you from 7:30pm this Wednesday night in the Queens Domain clubrooms.

Hear from you soon.

DATV Experimenter's Night

We started with a look at a SOTA Award Trophy which is a very nice unique glass trophy from Iverlocky in Scotland.

Justin VK7TW then confirmed that the Adalm Pluto can be locked to an external frequency like a GPS locked 10MHz source for the Langstone Project.

We then showed the new LED lighting for the Studio which is constructed from 12VDC LED strip struck onto extruded aluminium strap. These replace the fluro lighting currently used in the studio.

We then ran a contest with our online streaming viewers as to what a UFO looking device was? It was a Pyranometer which measures the sun's irradiation per square metre as a small voltage output. These are used by the Bureau of Meterology, the Antarctic Division, the Hydro and other organisations interested in the measuring the Sun's radiation hitting a surface. This device was found at a nearby Resource Tip Shop for a small fraction of its original cost.

We then reviewed the rest of the latest DUBUS Magazine with the following articles: 12GHz â…› prescaler, Parabolic Dish Filling Factor, Daily Microwave Propagation Index for Central Europe, the second part of high gain polarised low noise disk yagi for 23cm, an article on sunspots & HF propagation and what about errors in measurement with directional couplers.

Justin then went through some VK7 radio firsts from a recent Kingston School for Seniors Presentation.

We then had a promo of the March Presentation Night which is a Focus on Foundation Licencees Forum. This is about getting as many of our new (and old) Foundation Licence holders along as well as our experienced operators to share their collective experiences about getting on the air. The night is a sharing forum where we try and link inexperience with experience and help get more Foundation Licensees on the air.

We took a look at what is happening with the James Webb Telescope and the fantastic website about the deployment.

https://www.jwst.nasa.gov/content/webbLaunch/whereIsWebb.html

We had a quick look at the MicroFox in a film container that we will have a close look next time.

We finished with a look at our April presentation night - A day in the life of a Broadcast Audio Technician for the biggest sporting events in Australia with VK7AJ.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-XfD70RpAMg

We take a fortnight break as this week is a presentation night. See you you in a fortnight.

World News
Amateur Radio ban – Ukraine

Ukraine has declared a state of emergency in all of Ukraine except for eastern Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts starting on Feb. 24.

The parliament approved the decree introduced by President Volodymyr Zelensky on Feb. 23, as the threat of Russiaâ€Ös all-out invasion of Ukraine continues to grow.

Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts already have a special legal status because of Russiaâ€Ös ongoing occupation since 2014.

Restrictions introduced by the state of emergency are due to last 30 days and will vary depending on the region.

The state of emergency allows the authorities to temporarily limit the publicâ€Ös constitutional rights.

The decree green-lights the following measures:

    increased public order protection and security;

    checks of identification documents of civilians and frisking if necessary;

    ban on protests;

    temporary or permanent evacuation of people from dangerous areas and providing them with accomodation;

    ban on relocation of conscripts and reservists without notice;

    ban on producing and spreading information that may “destabilize the situation”;

    ban on amateur radio transmitting devices.

    Other measures that may be implemented “if necessary” include:

    a curfew;

    a special regime of entry and exit;

    ban on mass events;

    “special rules” for spreading information online.

Space Technology News
Micrometeorite knocked NBN satellite off-orbit in December

NBN was hit by a pair of outages to parts of its Sky Muster satellite network through December and early January.

The first outage started at 8.30am on December 21 when Optus - which “effectively flies our satellites”, NBN Coâ€Ös chief development officer for regional and remote Gavin Williams said - “confirmed an off-orbit condition of our second satellite, which we call our 1B satellite.”

Maxar Technologies, which owns SSL, the builder of the Sky Muster satellites, said the satellite is equipped with optical recognition technology “that saw some meteorite activity”, which appeared to confirm their theory.

“What that did is effectively make the satelliteâ€Ös body rotate whilst it remains in its orbit, so the satellite is no longer pointing at the appropriate spot on Earth.

Williams said the problem impacted 46,500 customers out of a total user base of about 112,000, about 40 percent of all users.

Williams said that the satellite was able to recover and reorient with the Earth, but not before customers had their services cut for about seven hours.
