Silent Key
Mark Rapley VK7ME SK
Mark was a regular and well liked contributor to the Sewing Circle Net.
He lived in an off-grid home in Lorinna and would occasionally have to stop transmitting, saying that the battery level was too low.
Mark also did some work with Graham VK7GS on the Redwater Creek Railway at Sheffield.
He set his sights on getting his amateur radio licence and studied hard with a group of his friends and first got his Foundation then studied for his Standard and his Advanced call. He was constantly on the phone to his amateur radio mentors with questions and queries.
He died suddenly on 25 Feb 2022 following a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, surrounded by his family in Hervey Bay Queensland.
Vale Mark.

Eric VK7EV recollects that he was a plasterer by trade and had an extensive antenna setup in Sprent.
Vale John.

RAOTC
March 2022 Broadcast
This is a reminder about the RAOTC broadcast for Monday the 7th of March 2022 over 2 of the VK7 repeater networks; that's tomorrow night for those listening on Sunday.
The first article features a historic recording from across the Tasman. In 1963 the last telegraph message by way of Morse Code was sent in New Zealand. In addition to centennial celebration speeches, we hear the actual Morse messages from a key then a sounder.
We jump to 1985 for an article in a journal called Ohmite News; this deals with inter-channel crosstalk measurement.
The main feature is about the history of Ferrite, the discovery that led to its invention, the many types and their uses and the fact that it was a Japanese invention.
Listen at 8 pm Monday local time over the VK7RAA/RTC state-wide network or at about 8:30pm as a telecast on VK7AX Spectrum Tasmania via the BATC members stream or in
the Ulverstone area on 445.50MHz DATV.
The date again is March 7th. Call backs will follow on both networks. Please call in if you are able. Callback statistics are sent to the RAOTC broadcast committee.
If you miss the off-air broadcasts you can listen to the audio file on the RAOTC website.

Last Fridayâ€Ös morning tea saw a healthy number of people coming and going through-out the session. Not just being limited to drinking and eating all the time, there were also deep technical discussions at a couple of tables. This included Nic VK7WWâ€Ös CW beacon with its reception in various parts of the world, general band propagation at this time of the year, and the latest from the James Webb telescope calibration process.
Peter VK7SP was continuing with the NTARC Equine project to port his self-written application from Windows to the Raspberry Pi4 platform. He was also assisting Norm VK7KTN in resurrecting his very old Windows laptop by converting it into a Linux Mint machine, capable once again of running modern radio software. Is there a theme here of getting away from Microsoft Windows. HiHi.
Peter has recently returned from Switzerland, which was his home for the past eighteen months, where he had plenty of spare time to work on this project. The use of a Raspberry Pi will provide a backup to the PC and an alternative that is much more field portable. This is for the management software that interfaces between the National Equine electronic timing system and NTARCâ€Ös data transfer system. This was designed and built by Andreâ€Ö VK7ZAB and is based on the amateur packet radio standard, to connect field checkpoints with the Ride Base. This assists the NTARC Safety Communications team in the tracking of riders. This is obviously a huge work in progress and we wish all involved good luck.
UPCOMING EVENTS
Club Tech night – Wednesday 9th March. Held at the NTARC Club rooms, 7.30pm until whenever.
TestNet and TechNet – Wednesday 16th March. TestNet/CW course on 3.580MHz from 7pm till 7.30pm….and then a TechNet on 3.567MHz from 7.30pm till about 8.30pm. Your host for the evening will again be Nic VK7WW.
Coffee Mornings – held every Friday in the NTARC Club rooms. Catch up time is from 10am to noon and we look forward to seeing you all there.
These coffee events represent a good opportunity to collect your QSL cards. We currently have cards awaiting collection, so why not pop in and check the QSL box and join us for a cuppa and chat.
As masking wear may soon no longer be mandatory, this maybe the last reminder to take your mask off when eating and drinking. You know who you are!
FINALLY – A reminder to all members that if you have any items of news you would like added to our weekly roundup, no matter how trivial, then please email them to the Secretary at the following address news(at)ntarc.net all items to be received no later than 5pm on the Friday prior to the Broadcast.

North West Tasmania Amateur Radio Club
Paton Park final working Bee.
Sunday 27th March, Matt VK7ML Ross VK7WP and Eric VK7EV attended Paton Park Scout Camp, to finish the JOTA upgrade.
Matt modified the wall plate that covered the antenna coaxes that were stored in the brick wall, adding 5 inline N connectorâ€Ös and a 6-pin microphone plug to connect the rotator cable.
The excess coax was cut off the coax cables, and the rotator cable. Then with help from Ross, Matt terminated cables with N connectors and screwed them to the rear of the inline wall fittings.
The plate was mounted on the wall, and all antennas tested on their bands, and all operated very well with very low SWRs. We then adjusted the rotator and controller as they were pointing in different directions. After 5 hours we decided to call it quits, after very heavy rain in the morning and sweltering heat in the arvo, we headed home.
The excess cable will be used to make the patch cords for each antenna to a radio. So now all Scouts or ourselves need to do is turn up with a radio and power supply and patch the radio to the relevant antenna, making it easy.

Welcome Back
VK7BJ rides the airwaves again
Jane VK7BJ has re-licenced after many years, just to grow Rexâ€Ös numbers on the 1296 QSO party and to support ALARA.
Her presence should make a reasonable percentage increase on 9cm as well!
With the amount of drilling, screwing, soldering and crimping that she has done for Brian, VK7BW, in the last couple of years, Jane has far more practical experience now than when she first passed her Advanced licence some 28 years ago.
Welcome back Jane.
Anon.
Linda VK7QP - President ALARA let the VK7 AR News team know that she was delighted to be Janeâ€Ös first re-licenced contact on 1296MHz on Friday morning.

Microwave News
9CM QSO Party
We are three 9cm stations away from 9 stations on 9cm!
Last Sunday after the 23cm QSO Party there were six stations on the 9cm net.
There was - VK7TW, VK7BW, VK7OO, VK7ZMS, VK7ZBX and VK7KAJ.
Similar to the 23cm QSO Party the stations stretch from Tea Tree to Lauderdale and Blackmans Bay and all are pointing at our wonderful microwave passive reflector otherwise known as Mt Wellington.
Signals were good with all Q5 reports and signal reports from 5/9+15 to 5/1.
This is a great test for the VHF and above Field Days and the John Moyle Memorial Field Day on 19-20 March 2022.
If you are interested in finding out more about what is required to get active on this band yourself, please reach out to one of the stations on the list or contact REAST.

REAST March Presentation Night
Focus on Foundation Licence Holders Forum
We thank those people who emailed us with their views on the Foundation Licence, membership and suggestions for improvements.
These suggestions were grouped into the following broad themes:
- Upgrading
- Mentoring
- Improving the membership & engagement processes
- Regular group sessions
- Ongoing active inclusion
- Improving the image of amateur radio
The group then undertook a detailed discussion on each of the themes.
Starting with how do I upgrade and the possibility of study groups to upgrade
This lead to a discussion about who you can talk with and who can mentor me?
We then went into how REAST can streamline the membership process and connect the new licensee with information
Which lead into how REAST can improve engagement with new members with things like:
- a Membership officer who guides the new member to information and people of interest
- Mentors / Elmers - identifying who new members can talk with about their subjects of interest
- Practice - sessions to get people on air and experiencing operating - voice, SSTV, digital, etc
Throughout the discussion there was a theme of regular group sessions - focused on operation and practice and the ongoing active inclusion of new members in club activities.
We finished with a brief discussion about whether there is a need to change/ improve the image of amateur radio?
A huge thank you to all who contributed to the discussion. Extensive notes were taken on the night and these will be considered at the next REAST Committee meeting to see how they can best be implemented.
The video of the night is available on the REAST YouTube Channel.
