Last Wednesday was a club tech night, so over to Idris, VK7ZIR for a brief rundown of the happenings;
“Slightly chilly tonight reminding us that itâ€Ös autumn and winter is just around the corner.
Ross VK7ALH exhibited a KW Electronics valve transceiver, part of the five KW items in his collection. They must all look very nice in a line-up Ross. He also had built a Field voltage regulator for a GM 50kW generator set which he set up on the bench to demonstrate its operation for us. Done as an urgent job where overseas replacement was too expensive and took too long. Thanks Ross.
Idris VK7ZIR brought along a Tracker Communications Scout marine HF 100W SSB transceiver. Made in Australia and going into Rossâ€Ös collection.
Lewis VK7IT has been busy with 3D printing. He showed us a nifty hand held stand and a very clever “third hand” vice for soldering plugs and sockets. Thanks Lewis.
Peter VK7PD had partially completed one of the Clubâ€Ös 23cm Yagi kits and showed us his progress. Also on the subject of 23cm, we tested a 23cm ring Yagi found stored in our workshop with Andreâ€Ö VK7ZABâ€Ös RigExpert antenna analyser. The graphical results indicated very favourable SWR dips in the band. These analysers are excellent instruments and are manufactured in Ukraine, so one wonders about their future availability considering current circumstances in that country.
Ross also brought in a selection of shack items from the estate of VK7ME (SK) which created a lot of interest and most disappeared very quickly. Thanks Ross.
Our new member Rob, with companion dog Mr. J, showed us a very interesting phone app for the sight impaired which, using the camera, recognised banknotes, speaking their value. He also brought to our attention small bumps on the lower edge of said notes, which, while not Braille, indicated the noteâ€Ös value in a numerical sequence for rising note value. So, one bump for five dollars, two bumps for ten dollars and so on. Itâ€Ös quite amazing the aids that are available in this area.
Meanwhile, while all this was going on, Andrew VK7DW, the NTARC QSL Manager had his head down busily updating his eQSL listings from the Radio Shack log book, to try and find corresponding QSOs so he could send replies to some past eQSL senders. Apparently he had quite some successes. Good work Andrew.
Thatâ€Ös all until next time, 73 de Idris VK7ZIR”
Thanks Idris for the update, it was indeed a very enjoyable evening, always something new to learn. I just wish I had some spare bank notes with five identification bumps on them. HiHi.
An update from the Friday coffee morning, Ross, VK7ALH has since installed and calibrated the Field Winding control regulator in the 50kW GM generator set, everything worked beautifully. One happy Ross.
UPCOMING EVENT
TestNet and TechNet – Wednesday 16th of March. TestNet/CW course on 3.580MHz from 7pm till 7.30pm….and a TechNet on 3.567MHz from 7.30pm till about 8.30pm. Your host for the evening will again be Nic VK7WW.
Club Tech night – Wednesday 23rd of March. Held at the NTARC Club rooms, 7.30pm until whenever.
Coffee Morning – held every Friday in the NTARC Club rooms. Catch up time is from 10am to noon and we look forward to seeing you all there.
These coffee events represent a good opportunity to collect your QSL cards. We currently have cards awaiting collection, so why not pop in and check the QSL box and join us for a cuppa and chat.
As it is no longer a government mandate and Covid regulations have been watered down it is now your personal choice to wear a face mask at morning teas.
FINALLY – A reminder to all members that if you have any items of news you would like added to our weekly roundup, no matter how trivial, then please email them to the Secretary at the following address news(at)ntarc.net all items to be received no later than 5pm on the Friday prior to the Broadcast.

REAST April Presentation Night
A day in the life of a Broadcast Audio Technician
We thank Andrew Johns VK7AJ who had agreed to come along and let us know what he gets up to when he is not doing his daytime job...HIHI!
Andrew is a well respected and in-demand Broadcast Audio Tech who travels Australia doing the audio setup and live mixing for many of the large sporting events you see and hear on your television, radio and streaming platforms.
This includes Test Cricket, Big Bash Cricket (BBL and WBBL) , Football (AFL and AFLW) NBL Basketball and many other sports.
Andrew has some great stories of mixing it with the "Talent" and using the phenomenal technology that rolls into town when these events occur.
This will be the REAST April Presentation night on Wednesday 6th April from 7:30pm and the presentation will be streamed and go out on RF.
Again a huge thank you to Andrew for giving us his time.

DATV Experimenter's Night
We started by taking a look at the Byonics Microfox 15S which is a 15mW 144MHz programmable transmitter that fits into a 35mm Film Container complete with LIPO battery 3.7V 650mA/h providing 16 hours of transmission time. The package includes another LiPo battery, USB charging cable and USB to 2.5mm jack for programming. We listened to the signal using a 2m handheld and ARDF tape measure antenna.
Alan VK7KAJ and Justin VK7TW then took a look at an Absolute Pressure Sensor which uses a crystal oscillator with the pressure varying the oscillations slightly. The unit only uses 1.3mA of current and puts out a signal of 30-42kHz which is proportional to the pressure. In this sensorâ€Ös case it is 0-15psi or 1 atmosphere. The frequency was 37,900 Hertz on Monday night, 37,858 Hertz on Tuesday night and 37,888 Hertz at the DATV night.
Alan then described with pictures the Antarctic weather stations that he worked on that used these pressure sensors and Alan gave a detailed description of the range of batteries used in the weather stations. Thanks Alan.
Justin then ran through the new member changes that the REAST committee is looking to implement. These include - Membership Officer, Updated / improved website, Skill register, Theory/practical session alternate with operational nights, More opportunities with activities demonstrating AR, Welcome email, mailing list, new membership BBQ/meeting, Buddy system, FL members tutoring new FL members, member badges, Club station utilised for many contests, 2m Foundation Licence net, broadcast new licensees call-ins and Shack visits.
We then reviewed the latest OTN Magazine and wrapped up with a reminder of the future events.

This week we take a look at using Smith Charts to work out a matching network, the calibration chart for the Pyranometer we looked at a few weeks ago, thanks to Kim VK7KB, RF interference created by Class D audio amplifiers thanks to VK7JUF and much more.
We go out on RF on 445.5MHz DVB-T 7MHz Standard Definition. So, if you have a TV, Set-top box or USB DTV Dongle that you can tune and scan 445.5MHz and you can see the Queens Domain, then you have a good chance of receiving the DATV Experimenter's Night Signal. Look out for VK7OTC. We also stream the nights on the REAST YouTube channel.

Salad-Dressing-Like Droplets Improve Printed Electronics
The assembly of 2D nanosheets on the surface of emulsion nanodroplets leads to the stabilization of the emulsion and requires only a tiny amount of material - report physicists in the UK.
Furthermore, the team has developed a model that allows fine-tuning of the solvent composition so the droplets could be used to create components for a range of applications from strain sensors to batteries.
The emulsions also raise the possibility of printing large-scale devices in a matter of minutes, which could have an important impact on electronics fabrication. Wouldnâ€Öt it be great to print with 2D materials such as graphene?
The answer is yes for many reasons, but how to do so is a puzzle that has confounded scientists working with 2D materials since Konstantin Novoselov and Andre Geim first isolated 2D sheets of carbon (graphene) in 2004.
A thousand papers have been published on this subject, but the question regarding printing remains open..."
