RAOTC
Broadcast for April

This is a reminder about the RAOTC broadcast for Monday the 4th of April 2022 over 2 of the VK7 repeater networks; thatâ€Ös tomorrow night for those listening on Sunday.

The first article gives information about the library of sound archives held by the WIA. Due to deterioration of the original media, these are being gradually digitised for the sake of preservation.

Listeners are treated to some samples of said recordings; these include descriptions of the ‘Trans Pacific Testsâ€Ö and the part they played in addressing the question: how far can radio waves travel?

Some listeners would know the name Maxwell Howden; Max not only took part in pioneering DX contacts but successfully recommended a solution to the ‘Launceston Roarâ€Ö.

An amusing story is detailed about an early contact between New Zealand and the UK.

The name Heathkit is well known to many radio amateurs. What many wouldnâ€Öt know is that the company started out as a kit – aircraft manufacturer; they got into electronics kits after World War 2.

Heathkit no longer makes kits for amateur radio equipment but after many moves, changes of ownership and restructures, the company can still be found on its website today.

Listen at 8 pm Monday local time over the VK7RAA/RTC state-wide network or at about 8:30pm as a telecast on VK7AX ‘Spectrum Tasmaniaâ€Ö via the BATC membersâ€Ö stream or in the Ulverstone area on 445.50MHz DATV. Audio feed is available on VK7RDR, 439.775MHz, Dazzler Range.

The date again is April 4th. Call backs will follow on both networks. Please call in if you are able. Callback statistics are sent to the RAOTC broadcast committee.

If you miss the off-air broadcasts you can listen to the audio file on the RAOTC website.

73, Peter VK7PD

WIA AGM & Virtual Conference - Antarctic Gateway

Antarctica really is an amazing place and the WIA AGM & Virtual Conference is showcasing Antarctic history, adventure, global research and communications challenges.

It is being held on Saturday May 7, 2022.

The morning consists of the Online Annual General Meeting and the afternoon is the online / Virtual Conference with the theme Antarctic Gateway and will be coming to you from Hobart Tasmania.

A full program can be found on the WIA website.

https://www.wia.org.au/newsevents/news/2022/20220303-1/

This morning we feature the Keynote Speaker - Professor Elle Leane and her presentation which is titled - Mixed Signals: The Impact of Wireless on the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (1911-14)

Just before the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (AAE) departed in late 1911, its leader Douglas Mawson boasted to the media that “the great feature of the expedition is our wireless equipment.†For Mawson, establishing wireless communication between the two continents for the first time was important not only for practical and scientific reasons, but also symbolic ones: a continent that was effectively within talking distance of Australia, he argued, had a “special call†upon its people.

While Mawson ultimately achieved his dream of establishing two-way wireless communication from Antarctica, it came at a significant cost. The windy environment meant that almost no contact was made in the AAEâ€Ös first year. When the expedition was unexpectedly extended into 1913, the arrival of a new wireless officer, Sidney Jeffryes, turned everything around, and regular conversations were soon held with Australia, relayed via Macquarie Island. But this new-found connection created tensions between the men, putting Jeffryes under considerable stress. Around midwinter, just after a strong gust of wind damaged the main wireless mast, Jeffryes began suffering from a psychotic illness. The wireless became a battle-ground between the paranoid, isolated “wireless man†and his worried, frustrated leader – a situation that only got worse when the expedition returned to Australia.

Drawing on a collaborative research project with polar historian Ben Maddison and psychologist Kimberly Norris, Professor Leane examines the impact of the wireless on the interpersonal dynamics of the expedition, focusing particularly on Jeffryes, as a way of understanding the important but destabilizing role this technology played during Australiaâ€Ös first Antarctic expedition.

Professor Leaneâ€Ös Biography

Elizabeth (Elle) Leane is Professor of English in the College of Arts, Law and Education at the University of Tasmania, where she is also Associate Dean (Research). She recently completed a research fellowship split between the School of Humanities and the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies at UTAS.

With degrees in physics and literary studies, she is interested in building bridges between disciplines, and particularly in bringing the insights of the humanities to the study of the Antarctic region.

She is the author of three monographs – South Pole: Nature and Culture (Reaktion 2016), Antarctica in Fiction (Cambridge 2012) and Reading Popular Physics (Ashgate 2007) – and the co-editor of Anthropocene Antarctica (Routledge 2019) and two other collections.

Elle is Arts and Literature editor of The Polar Journal and a chief officer of the Standing Committee on Humanities and Social Sciences of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research. She recently finished an Australian Research Council funded project looking at ways of reimagining the roles and relations of the Antarctic ‘gatewayâ€Ö cities, and is about to begin another focussed on the way in which cruise-ship operators mediate the Antarctic tourism experience. She is currently working on a book about contemporary Antarctic travel and tourism texts.

Sound good well this is only the first presentation!

Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club Incorporated

Winter is definitely coming our way, Friday morning at the club rooms was not necessarily cold outside but it was good to see Luke Sky Warmer slowly burning away in the background, having successfully taking the overnight chill of the club rooms. Many thanks to Ros who turns up early every Friday to set up the club room and make the place welcoming and inviting to all.

As I put pen to paper or rather finger to keyboard, I am at St Helens with the NTARC Safety Communications crew, on an Equine Endurance Ride setup. We travelled down this morning and have established our Ride Base, set up a 2 meter and 70cm repeater for voice and data communications and trialled communications to each field check point. Rides start early Saturday morning. If it is Sunday when you hear this then hopefully we are packing up and making our way back to Launceston after “fingers crossed†a successful Equine Endurance Ride. An update to follow next week, but a big thankyou to those that travelled from the North West and Southern areas to provide assistance on this event.

NTARC Safety Communications Team has also been requested to provide safety communications for an upcoming Equine Endurance Event to be held at Wattlewood Park Sassafras on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th of April. The rides will be 160 km, 80 km and 40 km spread over the two day event. We will be providing Base Communications, checkpoints and RFID tracking of rider progress. As this is one of the closer events, only a pleasant 1 hour or so drive from Launceston and if you are at a “loose end†over the weekend, why not drop in, have a chat and drink and see how the Safety Communications Team utilise voice and data skills to provide this type of safety support.

And now for something completely different, an interesting quote heard around the bands.

“QRP CW operation is like fly fishing. It takes skill and patience and very little equipment.†

Sounds like a pretty accurate description of this addictive activity in a nutshell. Thanks Nic, VK7WW.

Weak Signal News
AMSAT-LU WSPR beacon in Antarctica

AMSAT Argentina has prepared and donated to Cocoantar (Antarctic Joint Command), a beacon in WSPR mode (WSPR = emission of signals of minimum power 200mW and long range) On March 22, 2022, when the winter south hemisphere solstice occurred (passage of the sun over the equator to the north), this beacon was installed and began its operation at 40, 20, 15 and 10m from the Esperanza (Hope) Antarctic base, emitting with his Call Sign LU1ZV. In just one day, this permanent beacon has already been received and confirmed by multiple stations, allowing real-time viewing of propagation and range conditions in the bands that are broadcasted. This reaffirms and makes known to the world the will and commitment of Argentina of its permanent presence in Antarctica together with the Argentine Amateur Radio in the white continent by the hand of AMSAT-LU.

To track, maps, graph and details see the link on the email edition of this broadcast.
