RAOTC
Broadcast for April

This is a reminder about the RAOTC broadcast for Monday the 2nd of May 2022 over 2 of the VK7 repeater networks; that’s tomorrow night for those listening on Sunday.

The first article describes how a stealth antenna can be used successfully due to the advantage gained by digital modes. This example describes a 21MHz inverted V under a tiled garage roof.

The second article takes a historic look at the review of an oscillograph produced by Paton Instrument, Sydney in 1925.

The major feature is concerned with Oliver Heaviside; it includes his historic work in mathematics, his prediction of ionospheric propagation, his observation of the ‘skin effect’ in electrical conduction and the fact that he patented coaxial cable.

The ‘E Layer’ in the ionosphere is also known as the Kennelly – Heaviside Layer, jointly named to commemorate the contribution to research in this area also made by Arthur Kennelly.

Listen at 8 pm Monday, local time, over the VK7RAA/RTC state-wide network or at about 8:30pm as a telecast on VK7AX ‘Spectrum Tasmania’ via the BATC members’ stream or in the Ulverstone area on 445.50MHz DATV. Audio feed is available on VK7RDR, 439.775MHz, Dazzler Range.

The date again is May 2nd. Call backs will follow on both networks. Please call in if you are able. Call back statistics are sent to the RAOTC broadcast committee.

If you miss the off-air broadcasts you can listen to the audio file on the RAOTC website.

Save the New Date!
Miena Hamfest is Back!

It’s been a long time between drinks but after four years the Miena Hamfest returns in 2022 and will be on Saturday 19th November. Please note we have bought the day forward one weekend to miss the VHF and Above Spring Field Day.

Held at the very well appointed (and heated) Great Lake Community Hall at Miena in the central highlands of Tasmania.

We have all amateur radio clubs in VK7 involved in the organising group to promote this as the pre-eminent biennial VK7 Hamfest.

Do you have an idea to make the Hamfest an even better event? Would you like to see something in particular at the Hamfest - let us know at vk7arnews(at)gmail.com.

We are talking with many suppliers to try and get them down and bring lots of goodies! There will also be pre-loved tables available.

BBQ lunch will also be available for purchase and a raffle with some very nice prizes will also be on offer.

Mark it in your diary and make it a day out in the highlands.

More details as they come to hand.

73, Hamfest Organising Group.

As previously promised, an update on the Wattlewood Equine Endurance Ride. This was an extra ride added to this year’s calendar and contained a 160km event. This event was a pre-requisite for anyone wanting to enter the National “Tom Quilty Gold Cupö to be held in NSW in June. Well, things didn’t quite start out as smoothly as anticipated. The NTARC Safety Communications Team was one person down, this meant the inability to permanently crew one of the checkpoints, all thanks to Covid 19! We arrived Friday to finish setting up and start testing communications to the checkpoints. Even this didn’t go our way as things were delayed because the ride organisers were still deciding on check point locations! There was a new main checkpoint at Skirving Farm at about mid distance of the 45km loop. The main ride organizer drove out to the location with the comms crew closely following behind taking note of landmarks and directions. This was backed up by creating a GPS tracking trail, so hopefully the location could be found later in the evening. Bush tracks have a habit of looking completely different once darkness has fallen, especially when there is no moonlight. The crew managed to find their way back and establish a checkpoint before the 160km riders who started at 03:00 came through. The remainder of the ride events started from noon and were 85, 50 and 25km. The final details of one checkpoint was being decided after the midday riders had started. Peter VK7SP managed to get to the location, setup communications, test and was ready before the first rider came through. Well done Peter. One crew moved four times between check points during the entire event, managing to keep ahead of the riders. Thanks to Peter VK7SP, Roger VK7ARN, Idris VK7ZIR, Andre’ VK7ZAB and Stefan VK7ZSB, our side of the event went off without a hitch.

Looking forward in the year a bit to the 19th of November and the proposed Ham Fest at Miena. In the words of one of the great men of our decade “we need to make it a truly VK7-wide supported and organised event.ö It has been a number of years and, not to mention Covid 19, since the last Ham Fest, this could be an excellent coming together of Hams supporting Hams. Remember there is always a good “pre-lovedö equipment section, so now is the time to start thinking about a shack “spring cleanö and any no longer needed items earmarked for November, so you can make space for more equipment you will purchase at Miena. Let one of the committee know if you would like to sell items, assist or be involved in the event in any way.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Club Tech night – Wednesday 4th May. Held at the NTARC Club rooms, 7.30pm until whenever.

TestNet and TechNet – Wednesday 11th May. TestNet/CW course on 3.580MHz from 7pm till 7.30pm….and a TechNet on 3.567MHz from 7.30pm till about 8.30pm. Your host for the evening will again be Nic VK7WW.

Malcolm White Presentation – 15th June about 20:00 Apart from being a licensed amateur at an early age, and a CW aficionado, the major topic is to be his association with Ray Naughton VK3ATN at the time of Ray’s pioneering Earth Moon Earth (EME) achievements in the 1960s on the 2 metre band.

Coffee Morning – held every Friday in the NTARC Club rooms. Catch up time is from 10am to noon and we look forward to seeing you all there. These coffee events represent a good opportunity to collect your QSL cards. We currently have cards awaiting collection, so why not pop in and check the QSL box and join us for a cuppa and chat.

FINALLY – A reminder to all members that if you have any items of news you would like added to our weekly roundup, no matter how trivial, then please email them to the Secretary at the following address news(at)ntarc.net all items to be received no later than 5pm on the Friday prior to the Broadcast.

That’s all folks from,

Stefan, VK7ZSB, Secretary NTARC inc.

North West Tasmania Amateur Radio Club
Winter Luncheon

The Club held its winter luncheon on Saturday the 23rd April at the Lighthouse Hotel, Ulverstone

Club members and guests enjoyed a scrumptious luncheon and delicious desserts, and the conversation around the tables wasn’t only amateur related hi hi, but delved into the world of motors cars and the servicing of them and other non-amateur related hobbies.

Those who came thoroughly enjoyed the event.

---------------

Bar B Que and Fox Hunt

A Bar-B-Que and Fox Hunt is to be held on the 14th May 2022.

We plan to start with a Bar B Que commencing at Midday at Legion Park, off The Esplanade behind the Showgrounds at West Ulverstone.

This is accessed by turning East into Maud Street off Queen Street, following road to river and BBQ facilities. This is a BYO food & drinks, Onsite there are two electric Bar B Ques, toilets, running water and some seating and tables under cover.

Then at 2pm, if there are sufficient numbers, we will commence the Fox Hunt, which will be along the style of the old-fashioned CB Fox hunts, where the Fox’s hides, and then the chasers using signal strength and clues, attempt to locate the Fox.

The person who finds the Fox, then goes and hides, and we start the chase again, to assist any amateur to participate, it will be run on Channel 50, 146.500 MHz and operate in the Ulverstone Township. We will continue while there are chasers for the Fox.

If the weather is inclement, VK7EV will be on 2m VK7RMD in the morning, to advise if event is still proceeding, if canceled we may reschedule to the following Saturday.

DATV Experimenter's Night

https://fb.me/e/1t3WKZEx0

Justin VK7TW started with the recent ICOM Japan announcing the SHF project that is being shown at Dayton from 20 May 2022. It has a ethernet connected control head based on the IC-705, covers 2.4 & 5.6GHz. Power over Ethernet is used to power the Transceiver. It also has 1PPS for the frequency stability - from built-in GPS.

https://www.icomjapan.com/lp/shf/

We then got one of the new REAST membership Team into the studio with Paul VK7FPCL and discussed what the team would be responsible for namely the Membership lifecycle including the attracting, onboarding, engagement and retention of members.

We discussed the ARRL Author - Ward Silver N0AX great presentation about the "Good Arrow" of amateur radio.

https://www.tapr.org/pdf/DCC2015-Ham-Radio-Now-What-N0AX.pdf

We then went through some pictures of Radio equipment at the Australian War Memorial and ended with Winnie the War Winner. These pictures include a De Haviland Mosquito that the late John Rogers VK7JK used to fly in WWII on photo reconnaissance trips out of Singapore.

We then showed pictures of the signals room in the Anglesea Barracks Military Museum of Tasmania which includes a Winnie replica built by the late Barry Riseley VK7RS who worked with Max Loveless VK7ML SK who built the original Winnie in East Timor.

We then moved to a small 160m Antennas from a design by Drew Diamond VK3XU. It is a top loading coil short (6m) with capacitive hat. Justin went through the assembly of the loading coil. Justin is repurposing an old Adcock Direction Finding antenna vertical element. Justin will be testing it over the weekend and will report back next week.

We did a promo of the WIA Virtual Conference on 7 May 2022 (in TWO WEEKS) and urged people to come along in person at the clubrooms - why not come and see and speak with the WIA Board and the presentations at the IMAS lecture theatre. Just book to come along or watch the stream at the link below. Open to all.

This week we will have a report on how the small 160m vertical performed, we will have a segment with more on how to do SSTV, more on the VK5JST SWR Power Meter and much more.

We go out on RF on 445.5MHz DVB-T 7MHz Standard Definition. So, if you have a TV, Set-top box or USB DTV Dongle that you can tune and scan 445.5MHz and you can see the Queens Domain, then you have a good chance of receiving the DATV Experimenter's Night Signal.
