WIA Merit Awards announced at 2022 AGM
There were eight (8) WIA Merit Awards announced at the WIA AGM today.
Recipients of the WIA Merit awards in 2022 were:-
Peter Young VK3MV - Presidents Commendation
In recognition of a very extended service to the WIA. A recipient of
the GA Taylor Medal (2012), for exceptional services to the Wireless
Institute of Australia Peter has been of a significant assistance to
the institute over many years. He has only recently stood down from
the position of WIA Monitoring Service Co-ordinator and as a director
of the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU)
Dale Hughes VK1DSH - Presidents Commendation
Dale has previously received the G A Taylor medal (2016), the highest
WIA Merit Award. Dale was also a recipient of the Ron Wilkinson
Achievement award in 2012. Dale continues to serve the WIA on
committees and as our representative to the World Radio Conference.
He is an active member of the Spectrum Strategy Committee and the
Regulatory Liaison Group. Dale is also an active member of the IARU
liaison sub-committee. Dale also chairs one of the principal working
groups.
Graham Kemp VK4BB - Presidents Commendation
In recognition of his contribution as Team Leader of the WIA News
service group and anchor of the weekly broadcast. Graham has a
high profile in WIA Media circles and is trusted to bring the weekly
news to our members throughout Australia. Graham was a recipient of
the GA Taylor medal in 2005
Ian Jackson VK3BUF - Technical Excellence Award
In recognition of his technically contribution to the amateur service
and articles and videos on the reduction of QRM and RFI including his
article on ferrites and how they can be applied to RFI suppression.
Andrew Chapman VK4QF - Chris Jones Award
In recognition of his special achievements and longstanding efforts
for the benefit of the Amateur Radio community in Queensland.
In particular for being integral in the establishment of the
SE Queensland Wide Area Network (SEQWAN). SEQWAN is a network of
seven crosslinked repeaters providing reliable communications for a
large part of south east Queensland.
Hayden Honeywood VK7HH - Michael Owen Medal
In recognition of service to Amateur Radio through the publication of
HRDX internet web site and the HRDX YouTube Video Streaming channel.
These internet and social media streaming outlets are educational,
informative, entertaining and inspirational. Appealing to both
younger and newer recruits as well as the older stalwarts of the
Amateur Radio service.
Bevan Daniel VK5BD - Ron Wilkinson Achievement Award
In recognition of his valued contribution to value adding to the
WIA National News Service by compiling a professional video version
each week which is made available for retransmission on ATV systems
around the world, including the British Amateur Television network
as well as being published on YouTube and for personal use.
Grant Willis VK5GR - GA Taylor Award
In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the Amateur Radio
Service and to the Wireless Institute of Australia as a member of the
Spectrum Strategy committee and the IARU Liaison Sub Committee.
Grant is the WIA representative to the IARU Region 3 HF Band Plan
Committee and is the Chair of that committee of the IARU.
Grant Willis is also a keen contester and was a recipient of a
Presidents Commendation in 2018.
Publications Committee awards 2022
The Publications Committee found itself with an embarrassment of
riches when it came to reviewing 2021s magazines and nominating
recipients of the three annual PubCom awards. It has been an
extraordinary year, all round.
As you can see, the Committee decided to make multiple awards in
two categories. This is not without precedent, as the WIA website
Awards pages reveal.
Al Shawsmith Award for Journalism.
Licensed since 1935, Al Shawsmith VK4SS (SK 2010), a noted CW operator
and DXer, gained fame as a prolific author in AR. He was the
Official Historian for the former Queensland Division of the WIA.
The award is made for the best non-technical article published in
Amateur Radio magazine in the previous calendar year.
The standard of general-subject articles submitted for publication
in 2021 was remarkably high. Accordingly, there are two recipients,
these being:
Rex James VK3OF, for What a weekend moonbounce on HF!, published in
Issue 6; and
Rex Moncur VK7MO, for Antarctica and the Australian Antarctic Program,
published in Issue 5.
Higginbotham Award
This Award is named after Ron Higginbotham VK3RN, who produced
Amateur Radio magazine at The Richmond Chronicle in Melbourne over
the decades from 1949 through 1973.
For service to the amateur radio community, this award for 2021
goes to Jenny Wardrop VK3WQ, for her reliable continuance in
contributing the ALARA column for AR, and consistent promotion and
support of YLs of all ages.
Technical Award
The earliest mention that we could find of an award for technical
articles published in AR magazine is in the April 1959 edition
(p.17). While not saying specifically so, in noting that VK6EC/T was
granted the 1958 Technical Award for his article series on Amateur TV
the note hints that there were previous awards.
It seems the granting of a Technical Award for articles in AR over
the previous calendar year has a chequered history since that era.
However, it has been more consistent over the last decade.
The standard of articles submitted for publication in 2021 has
certainly been high, and particularly, the significance of topics
authors wrote about.
The Committee settled on three recipients of the award for technical
articles published in 2021:
Andrew Anderson VK3CV for his article on Practical communications at
30 THz, published in Issue 2;
Lou Destefano VK3AQZ, for his series on The VK3AQZ HF antenna tuner
project, published from Issue 2 through to Issue 2 - 2022; and
Dale Hughes (VK1DSH) and Dimitrios Tsifakis VK2COW, for their
article on Experiments with LoRa digital transmissions, published in
Issue 3.

On behalf of the WIA Board of Directors, just a couple of messages
from me this week.
The WIA Board has resolved that to show our respect to silent keys,
the WIA will read out any silent keys that we have become aware of
in the previous month. We will also continue with the tradition of
reading out and paying our respects to silent keys at our yearly AGM.
The WIA will also publish a dedicated page on our website, which
will list all silent keys as we continue to pay our respects and
remember our close friends and colleagues that have sadly left us.
On behalf of the WIA Board of Directors and all members of the WIA,
we pass on our sincere condolences and our thoughts are with the
family, friends, colleagues of the loved ones we have lost may they

As outlined in the February broadcast by President Scott Williams,
the WIA offers all WIA Affiliated Clubs access to a Group Buying
Arrangement for Public Liability Insurance. The amount of WIA
Affiliated Clubs that participate, allows the WIA to go out to the
insurance market through a Broker, and obtain a group discount or
reduced premiums that would otherwise not be able to be obtained.
WIA Affiliated Clubs are able to choose liability amounts of
$10 million and $20 million and a fee is charged subject to the
state or territory in which the club is located and a fee per member.
We are delighted to announce that well in excess of 100 clubs have
participated in obtaining insurance through the program this year.
Just a little reminder to those clubs that have not yet paid, it was
essential to pay no later than 30 April to ensure your insurance
remains valid.
The WIA is proud to be able to assist clubs in obtaining this
insurance and this is just another example of the great benefits
of being an Affiliated Club with the WIA.

The theme for the issue as foreshadowed on Page 3 of Issue 2 is
Homebrew hacks and hints! And I dont mean the liquid kind of
homebrew.
Every inveterate homebrewer is confronted at one time or another with
a situation where you have to turn a knob but the shaft for the pot
or capacitor is necessarily located out of reach.
Jim Sosnin VK3 Juliet-Sierra-Tango VK3JST found a cheap and
cheerful solution to that problem, without using an Arduino or
RaspberryPi digital device.
He called it the uTurn a minimum parts count remote control.
Jim describes his charmingly simple project in this issue.
Having an issue with RF feedback in your shack? The likely culprit
may be RF travelling down the outside of the coax leading from your
multi-band HF dipole.
An inveterate homebrewer you all know Lou Destefano
VK3 Alpha Quebec Zulu VK3AQZ describes how he solved his problem,
describing tricks and traps in selecting and building a low-cost
choke balun. Whats more, its rated for use up to 400 watts.
For those venturing on the bands beyond six and two metres, homebrew
hacks and hints can get a little more complicated. A veteran of many
years mountain-topping with his homebrew creations for bands from
six metres through the well, millimetres Doug Friend VK4OE
who shares his hints and hacks for getting the most from a lollygagging
long-boom loop Yagi.

REGION ONE
Amateur Radio Supported a Special Mother's Day Event for Ukraine.
Tens of thousands of mothers and children have left their home
without a father, heading to the safety of nearby countries and away
from the war-zone.
Amateur Radio was suspended in Ukraine on February 24th, but now
there is an allowance obtained to transmit amateur radio remotely,
by using an Ukraine CEPT license as long as the RF emissions are not
from the Ukrainian soil.
Well-known DXpeditioner Alex, UT5UY, went on the air on May 4th as
EA4/UT5UY using a remote station in Madrid, Spain. Amateur Radio
was also used Mother's day when Alex greeted his wife, Sasha and his
12 year old son Daniel, currently living in Finland.
This is in line with IARU's theme: "Never Alone", and showcasing
the fact that Amateur Radio has an important role even during the
world's most turbulent times.
A novel contest was organized by the Croatian Amateur Radio Association.
The 64th state level competition of Young Technicians of the Republic
of Croatia.
The competitions took place in 12 categories.
14 youngsters from 14 Croatian counties competed in the
"Radio Communication" category. The first part, was where
competitors took a written test of general technical knowledge.
The second part was the construction of a small radio transmitter.
The third part simulated an emergency, the task, to find an injured
person. This part involved orienteering with the help of a map,
locating a radio beacon carried by the injured person by means of a
radio direction finder, determining the person's coordinates and
distance, and relaying the position by radio.

Aircraft Altimeter Retrofits
The United States' Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have met
with telecom and airline industry officials in a push to retrofit
and ultimately replace some airplane radio altimeters that could
face interference from C-Band 5G wireless services.
The altimeters give data on a plane's height above the ground and
are crucial for bad-weather landings. Potential wireless interference
from a planned 5G rollout led to disruptions at some U.S. airports
earlier this year.
The round-table meeting considered retrofits with antenna filters,
which mitigate potential interference from 5G.
NEW TEST OF WIRELESS POWER TRANSFER CALLED A SUCCESS
In the United States, military researchers' latest test of wireless
power transfer over microwave frequencies has been called a success.
Kent Peterson KCDGY brings us the update thanks to ARNewsLine
The still-experimental practice of beaming power over microwave
frequencies to transfer electrical power using so-called "ground bounce"
has completed its most successful test to date. The United States Naval
Research Laboratory recently completed a trial in which 1.6 kilowatts of
power was transmitted terrestrially using a 10-GHz beam over a distance
of 1 kilometre, or six tenths of a mile. This kind of point-to-point
transfer of electrical power is an emerging technology that is becoming
increasingly favourable for scientists looking to expand its application.
An IEEE (I Triple E) paper published late last year said the use of the
ground-based transmitter is part of ongoing exploration that researchers
hope will eventually open the door to space-to-earth wireless
transmission of power. Scientists believe that limiting the frequencies
in use to those below 10GHz will lessen the loss of power during
transmission.
Paul Jaffe, KJ4IKI, the project lead, said in an April 20th press
release that the systems have been developed keeping safety limits in
mind for animals and people.

Chairman of the ARRL RF Safety Committee Gregory D. Lapin, N9GL,
Ph.D., P.E., will receive an award at the 2022 Dayton Hamvention
from the Radio Society of Great Britain.
He will receive the Founders' Trophy, recognizing his outstanding
service to the society.
Along with members of the RSGB, the ARRL RFSC members formed an
EMF Oversight Group, which has been meeting since August 2020 to help
develop tools and procedures for complying with the new RF Exposure
regulations for amateur radio operators in Great Britain. The new
rules in the UK are similar to those already in effect in the
United States.

Hi all yes this is Nathan VKDAD from the South Coast Amateur Radio
Club with an update on our APRS project.
The SCARC Amateur Radio Club currently has a TNC APRS repeater at our
Willunga Hill site.
VK5RSC-1 Upgraded on 14 May, 2022 to a Digipeater at Willunga Hill
Site (Igate facilities). Digipeater (Rpi with USB Soundcard
and TAIT 8110) VHF radios. From the old TNC.
VK5RSC-2 located Normanville. Was switched on the 11 May, 2022
VK5RVH-1 located Victor Harbor. Date to be advised.
This project has taken months to source, negotiate and finalise the
setups.

A new YouTube video is called "Two Teens, a Ham Radio, and Operation
Deep Freeze."
Produced by Lance Geiger, known as The History Guy, the video
chronicles two teenage hams back in the mid to late 1950's who helped
keep an expedition at the South Pole, during the international
Geophysical year in 1957, in touch with family and friends throughout
the entire winter.
Jules Madey, K2KGJ, his brother John, K2KGH (now SK) are the hams
profiled and their use of phone patches and relays to pass on messages
from the crew at the pole. The video presents the back story of how
this all came about with frequent expeditions by the US Navy to
begin setting up a polar base.

"About 3 AM, I was awakened by someone sending S-O-S on their
car horn. I leaped out of bed, grabbed a bathrobe, and with an
extra-long metal-flashlight zoomed down a flight of stairs to our
apartment buildings' carport. There I found a young lady sitting
just inside our rolling car-gate. I inquired, 'Are you the person
sending S-O-S on a car horn?'
She smiled saying, 'Yes. I guessed if I just leaned on my car horn,
to get someone to let me out with an electronic gate-opener, no one
would respond. So I sent S-O-S and you got here in about 30-seconds!'"

A special event station for young Scouts in the United States is back
after two years, and it logged an impressive array of contacts.
You might consider special event station W2P the official station of
the Comeback Kids.
The 58th annual Scout Camporee at the West Point Military Academy in
New York had to be cancelled for two consecutive years because of the
COVID-19 pandemic. On the weekend of April 22nd to 24th, it returned
and got on the air, making 577 contacts on CW and phone, covering
41 states and 25 DXCC entities on three continents.
James Gallo, KB2FMH, one of the organizers, told NewsLine that
organizers and the West Point Scoutmaster's Council saw that the
camporee itself made up for lost time, even with the usual number of
6,000 attendees reduced to 4,000 as a COVID precaution.
W2P had about 13 operators working in rotation on five stations, the
contacts were devoted to mini-rag chews, giving everyone a chance to
share memories of being in Scouting or the military.
Most memorable contact was logged in the middle of the night on 20 meters:
a 5-watt station with the call sign R 5 AJ. The operator told James
he'd been a Scout as a boy and when he found the listing on QRZ he had
to make the call.

Radio ham helps save man swept overboard
April 28 an emergency call came in that a ship had a man overboard.
A Norwegian radio amateur helped to save the person in question
A translation of the post by Norway's national society NRRL says:
In addition to being an avid radio amateur, Geir Tore Christiansen
LA 5 ZO is also an avid sailor.
He received the emergency call on digital selective call at 12 MHz.
The call came from the Hong Kong-registered bulk carrier.
They reported person overboard and stated their position at 27.39N
and 88.49E. BUT luckily when LA 5 ZO plotted this it was INLAND
IN BANGLADESH
He had the boats MMSI number and searched for it on MarineTraffic.
There was the right position, i.e. that 88 E should be WEST and he was
then 100 Nm south of New Orleans. He found the phone number of the
US Coast Guard who has this area. They had not received any call
and thanked for the info and said it would call them on the
satellite phone. "
Next day Geir Tore could read online that a search operation had
been launched, overboard man found by a plane with heat-seeking
camera, and then rescued by a helicopter. The person in question
was wearing an inflatable vest.
This case ended well.
One man's curiosity became another man's salvation.

INDEXA is supporting the Dave Kalter Memorial Youth DX Adventure
The INDEXA Board of Directors is honoured to be sponsoring this
project which encourages youth to experience DXing from the other
side of the pileups. This year their DX operation will be conducted
at the PJ2T superstation in Curacao.
President Bob Schenck, N2OO, says, "INDEXA has gotten behind this
worthwhile project because we realize it can only create a better
understanding of DXpeditioning for the youth in our hobby. We see
this as a great opportunity for them to gain first-hand experience
from the DXing point of view and perhaps spur interest with our
future generation of DXpeditioners."
The YDXA was founded in 2009 by Dave Kalter, KB8OCP (SK);
Don DuBon, N6JRL, and Jim Storms, AB8YK, with the purpose of
introducing young amateur radio operators, between the age of
11 to 17, to the excitement of operating as a team at DX locations.
Young hams who participate with the YDXA team are required to be
accompanied by a parent or guardian.
INDEXA encourages everybody to consider supporting this worthwhile
youth DX activity and look for them when they are on the air!

straight after the Local News. Local news follows National
news in all states. It would be great if those SWL's would
