Expressions of Interest
Tasmanian Ham Radio Conference

Hello All,

On behalf of the Radio and Electronics School of Southern Tasmania Inc (REAST) we'd like to invite expressions of interest to a proposed event to be held in the last quarter of 2022 in Hobart, Tasmania.

The main event will be a premiere Amateur Radio conference consisting of a mix of practical, technical and demonstrative talks from hams all over Australia and perhaps even the world! The event will also be able to be accessed online, but extra rewards for those who attend in person with raffles, show and tell, tours + more!

We know you've been locked down and are starving to get back to more Amateur Radio conventions, eager to show off what you've been building in the shack, so, why not consider a Tassie holiday? Bring the XYL, come down and enjoy the sights, food and experience that Hobart will have to offer.

A short 20 minute trip from the airport, Flights into Hobart run from all major capital cities and direct to Auckland, NZ, so our ZL buddies across the ditch, why not come over for a weekend of fun and socialization!

We are calling for those who wish to present or attend such an event to please contact us ASAP, either by replying to this post or email below to register your interest.

Once we gauge sufficient interest in such an event, more specific event details will be released.

Look forward to seeing you all in Hobart!

Stations included VK7s TW, ZPD, ZCF, KT, PD, DMH, JUF/MR and HXT.

https://www.ntarc.net/blogs/1u6lzeqdjj85rnz66jnkqkvi7nr6i9-txhff

After the Nth-Sth traffic died down some SSTV pictures were exchanged on VK7RAD including VK7s ZGK, DMH and TW. Some of these pictures can be found on Ken VK7KRJ’s SSTV Webcam at the link on the email edition of this broadcast.

https://sstv.vk7krj.com/2m.html

As a reminder in Southern Tasmania, VK7RAF (146.650 -600kHz) can be used both locally and linked to VK7RJG by using different CTCSS tones. 123Hz for local Southern operation and 141.3Hz for linking RAF to VK7RJG (438.55 -7Mhz).

We will continue these nights so why not join in and share some pictures. It’s a great way to test your digital interfacing. We get underway from around 7:30pm.

Contest News
Winter VHF and Above Field Day

https://www.wia.org.au/members/contests/vhfuhf/

This is happening this weekend from 0100 UTC Saturday 25 through 0059 UTC Sunday 26 June (0400 / 0359 in VK6).

Field days are a great opportunity to get out and about and play radio and see some sights. This particular event concentrates on the VHF/UHF and above part of the spectrum.

Many people will be heading out with varying amounts of equipment in very varied configuration all keen to make a contact and get some points on the board for the state.

Why not head out with what you have to a nice elevated spot and see who you can work, or even work yourself a new gridsquare.

You can too stay home if that is better suited. The more home stations the better, in fact the more stations the better for all!

All you need to have is your 6 digit maiden head square locator of your operating location and ideally a logging program although you can take a paper log and transcribe the contacts later.

Expect activity around the usual frequencies and modes.

52.525, 146.5, 439.0, 1296.15, 2403.15 and our popular 3398.15 good for FM and if required 50.15, 144.15, 432.15 on SSB. Hoping there will be some action higher up the bands as well.

Doug VK4ADC, on his own initiative, embarked recently on developing a new contest logger, which he has titled Yet Another Contest Logger – YACL. You can download it from the link on the email edition of this broadcast.

https://vk4adc.com/YACLSupport/index.php

Hope to hear you on the bands.

Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club Incorporated

www.ntarc.net

This week started off with a chilly and very muddy Equine Endurance Ride. You may remember in last week’s broadcast I mentioned we had two club members, Roger and Peter camping out overnight in the bush at a Check Point, in the cold. Well, they survived, and the following is based on Roger VK7ARNs summary of the event.

NTARC did their stuff at Lebrina, in somewhat difficult circumstances. The ride was organised, unusually, by the State body, the Tasmanian Equine Endurance Riders Association (TEERA), rather than the normal local Ride Organising Committee (ROC). This was to fill a gap in the ride calendar. The people involved did a great job in the circumstances, but we faced a few challenges with early access and with checkpoint placement and order. A very wet forest didn’t help with signal strength either! On the day, challenges were overcome by both technical and manual intervention. Changing from a mobile vertical whip and adapting a 13 element 70 cm beam certainly re-established reliable data communications back to base from a checkpoint with Rosco VK7RC and Idris VK7ZIR doing the experimentation.

Checkpoint numbering turned out to be different on the day, when riders appeared at Checkpoints out of sequence. Riders’ ears may have burned as they were discussed regarding missing a checkpoint, before it became clear the track was not as we’d understood it to be! Back at Ride Base Stuart VK7FEAT used his keyboard skills to get the rider data where it belonged on the spreadsheet.

You pretty much summed the day up Roger, not as we had anticipated but all turned out well.

Thanks to the crew made up of: Peter VK7KPC, Roger VK7ARN, Rosco VK7RC, Lewis VK7IT, Stuart VK7FEAT, Idris VK7ZIR, Andre’ VK7ZAB and Stefan VK7ZSB and thanks to Kaye for providing a cake which wasn’t hogged by the chilly Check Point, but shared with all crews, this definitely is our version of “Bush Tuckerö, HiHi

A selection of pictures taken on the day are available on the NTARC website under ‘Blogs’.

https://www.ntarc.net/blogs/pied-piper-endurance-ride-lebrina-18-june-2022

This also includes Drone video, by Roger, that really sets the bush scene we were all working in and shows how the area has started regrowth and recover after being ravaged by bush fires earlier this year.

The SSTV Net was held Thursday night on repeaters VK7RJG in the North and VK7RAF in the South of the state via the RF link. This allowed for a state wide link-up to happen.

The images came thick and fast and for those who have not decoded any of these SSTV images they are not just boring pictures of call signs going between amateurs, but show a range of eclectic interests and memorabilia which they are using as backgrounds for their call signs.

For those interested the popular PC based software is MMSSTV. For those on a phone or tablet using Android or Apple there are Apps available from their respective stores and work very respectably just holding your device to the radio speaker.

A selection of these SSTV images from the night are available on the NTARC website under ‘Blogs’.

https://www.ntarc.net/blogs/1u6lzeqdjj85rnz66jnkqkvi7nr6i9-txhff

Friday coffee morning saw the usual socialising as well as a range of technical activities. These included an Antenna Tuning Kit being constructed by Kevin VK7KJL. The successful outcome resulted in a working display and is now ready for setup and testing. Also the obligatory hand held programming, complete with driver problems, plus discussions on the upcoming Winter VHF and above Field Day.

Now to the Miena Hamfest in November. Are there any NTARC members that would be willing to donate time on the day or for preparation of the upcoming Miena Hamfest? Please, PLEASE! Contact the secretary or any committee member and make yourself known. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated by all amateurs for this worthwhile event.

Mug Order - yes, we are talking about the white mugs for drinking out of, those that have our club logo on one side, personalised with your name and call sign on the other. Sorry but it is now too late to put a request in! The order has been placed with the manufacturer and hopefully we will receive the printed goods mid-July. After arrival the final price will be calculated and the Mugs will be available from the club rooms for collection, either on coffee mornings or technical nights. If you have missed the boat on this shipment, I am sure there will be another sailing in the near future.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Club Technical night – Wednesday 29th June. The last for the financial year! Will be held at the NTARC Club rooms, 7.30pm until whenever.

TestNet and TechNet – Wednesday 6th July. TestNet/CW course on 3.580MHz from 7pm till 7.30pm, followed by a TechNet on 3.567MHz from 7.30pm till about 8.30pm. Your host for the evening will again be Nic VK7WW.

Coffee Morning – held every Friday in the NTARC Club rooms. Get warm while you catch up, time is from 10am to noon and we look forward to seeing you all there. These coffee events represent a good opportunity to collect your QSL cards. We currently have cards awaiting collection, so why not pop in, check the QSL box and join us for a cuppa and chat.

FINALLY – A reminder to all members that if you have any items of news you would like added to our weekly roundup, no matter how trivial, then please email them to the Secretary at the following address news(at)ntarc.net all items to be received no later than 5pm on the Friday prior to the Broadcast.

That’s all folks,

73’s from Stefan, VK7ZSB, Secretary NTARC inc.

NEWS FROM THE SOUTH
Radio and Electronics Association of Southern Tasmania

https://www.reast.asn.au/

https://wwRussian Antarctic vessel.

We moved to a whale sound recording device that sits on the sea bed recording and is triggered by a signal that releases a fusible link that drops the steel ballast and the device floats to the surface for retrieval.

Kim showed the connections on a CTD and the crimping of the single cored conductive wire with surrounding stainless steel cable that is up to 6km long. The input voltage on 6km of cable that is used to trigger the devices that capture the seawater at the relevant depth is around 280 volts for 28 volts at the CTD!

Kim then showed some repeater devices in Antarctica and some very funny telexes that were exchanged back in 1986.

Kim finished with a fascinating movie of what the trawling cameras saw at a range of depths.

A huge thank you to Kim and the AAD for this wonderful presentation.

The video of the presentation is available at the link on the email edition of this broadcast or through the REAST YouTube Channel.
