Statewide News
Thursday Night SSTV Nets
Thursday night was another “Quick or the Dead” SSTV Net night with many participants.
Callsigns seen were: VK7s FGGT, WP, ZGK, KPC, TW, ZBX, PD, KRJ, ZIR, OO, ZMS and ZAB.
The images can be viewed on the NTARC Blog page thanks to Andre VK7ZAB and the link can be found on the email edition of the broadcast.
https://www.ntarc.net/blogs/1u6lzeqdjj85rnz66jnkqkvi7nr6i9-txhff-8x8gj-n8l6n-yxenf-sl5cc
The SSTV tones died down around 9:15pm with the Two Ronnies goodbye - “its goodbye from me and its goodnight from him”.
A reminder in Southern Tasmania, VK7RAF (146.650 -600kHz) can be used both locally and linked to VK7RJG by using different CTCSS tones. 123Hz for local Southern operation and 141.3Hz for linking RAF to VK7RJG (438.55 -7Mhz). When using VK7RJG you need a 141.3Hz CTCSS tone to link with VK7RAF.
We will continue these nights so why not join in and share some pictures. Its a great way to test your digital interfacing. We get underway from around 7:30pm.
73, Justin VK7TW

North West News
SSTV Trial
The SSTV activity on 7RJG,has sparked interests in the North West, unfortunately some amateurs have indicated they cant receive VK7RJG , or at a reasonable signal, and asked if something could be done in the North West.
After consultation with CCARC, we will be running a test SSTV night this Monday the 25th July, on VK7RMD 2m repeater on Mt Duncan, behind Penguin commencing at 730pm, and if successful, looking at running an SSTV Net on the 4th Monday in the Month, so as not to interfere with the RAOTC Broadcast, and the ALARA NET.

Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club Incorporated
www.ntarc.net
This week it was nice to see one of our NTARC club members being successful in the VK Shires Contest. The objectives of this contest are for amateurs around the world to contact as many VK shires as possible in the contest period. VK amateurs are to work the world including VK, whilst the rest of the world can only work VK contacts.
Peter VK7KPC has taken out First Place for VK Single Operator, 10 Watt, All Band, All Mode category of the competition. The text on the certificate is set against a rather stunning rustic outback sunset complete with water, windmill and silhouetted horse with rider. The certificate would make an excellent image in next weeks SSTV net. Hint, hint. Well done Peter.
While we are on the subject of SSTV, I have a correction from last weeks broadcast, about a transceiver interface being used for SSTV which was built into a little cough lozenge box or Altoids tin as it is commonly known. The soldering and construction being of such a high standard I assumed that Peter VK7KPC had constructed it, but no, he was merely the last appreciative holder of the unit. Full credit goes to Wayne VK7XGW for its construction. Thanks for the clarification Peter and a very nicely constructed little unit to Wayne.
From the latest edition of Amateur Radio, in their “Outdoor Adventures” themed edition, there is an article by Denis Johnstone VK4AE, Contest Manager for the John Moyle Memorial National Field Day Contest for 2022. He is giving special tribute to the Amateurs that make the extra effort to venture outside home base and go portable for contests. Denis said “All of the portable stations that went to the effort to send in a log will receive a certificate. The WIA believes that those who go to the effort to set up and operate a portable station should be acknowledged.”
I know the following amateurs were mentioned in a previous broadcast but it seems fitting to been mentioned again after this article highlighted their efforts. I believe that all three NTARC club members have received their individual achievement award certificates now.
Peter VK7KPC came First in the 24 Hour, Portable, Single operator, All mode, All band category.
Andrew VK7DW came First in the 6 Hour, Portable, Single operator, Phone mode, All band category with James VK7JAM taking out Second place in the same 6 Hour, Portable section as well. Its nice for you to be recognised for your achievement and in this case your extra effort.
Next club room Tech Night will see a presentation by Lionel VK7ZLB on batteries. Most people assume that once you have the battery model number and voltage, you are good to go, somewhere in the world there is a matching battery. You generally dont give the matter much more thought, however it appears that the same battery model number can have variations depending on which country or continent you reside in. This can be anything from internal construction of the battery or far worse, variations in external contacts and connectors. For example a PP8 or as it is commonly called the “Fencer”, looks like a standard PP3 or 216 nine Volt transistor radio battery on steroids. It is 200mm tall, not 45mm, and it is 6 Volt not 9 Volt. It has the same two snap on connectors…. generally, but there are three other versions of connectors available somewhere in the world as well. Also one is made by “Ever Ready”, two words, and the other by “Eveready”, one word! Confused? So am I. Hopefully Lionel will at least inform us that the common old “AA” or “D” cell is the same the world over? Let Lionel walk us through the maze of battery anomalies and if all goes well he will also reveal the true identity of the mystery item from the previous tech night. It was like a valve but the only marking on it is the word “Vibron”, come and hear for yourself.
As discussed at the last club general meeting the Social Night will be held on Wednesday evening the 14th of September at the family friendly Mowbray Hotel. Those who wish to attend please register the number of places required to the Secretary or on the registration sheet at the club rooms.
We would like to say a special thank you to Hermon VK7HW for his ongoing work of processing QSL cards for the state and his delivery of cards to NTARC club rooms when he ventures North, it is appreciated. After his most recent delivery we are down to the following lonely cards left waiting for their owners to collect, VK7s AU, CH, DON, IG and WX.
Mug Order – They are now available at the NTARC club rooms. If you have ordered one but cant get in to pick it up drop a note to the Secretary and we will see what we can arrange. Because of the large order, we received a very favourable discount this time. Your final price is only ten dollars.

73 from Stefan, VK7ZSB, Secretary NTARC.

REAST August Presentation
AccessibleGD77 Software
Our August presentation will be given in person by the software developer Joe Stephen VK7JS who is coming down from Exeter on the picturesque Tamar river.
For those who dont know, Joe is totally blind but instead of this holding him back he has developed a reputation developing software for the vision impaired. Joe has developed many pieces of software including the very popular JAWS screen reader software that enables blind people around the world to access computers, including reading webpages, interacting with spread sheets and much more, using speech and Braille feedback.
As heard in last weeks broadcast Joe has developed the AccessibleGD77 firmware to replace the standard GD77 firmware to make the handheld much more friendly to visually impaired with lots of benefits for non-visually impaired people as well.
Joe will take us through this development and the features he has built into the AccessibleGD77 firmware.
This should be a fascinating presentation from the developer!
Thanks to Joe for this Presentation.

DATV Experimenter's Night
https://fb.me/e/3oJDUBwuY
We started the DATV night with self-proclaimed SSTV Nut Steve VK7OO - who has been running the 20m SSTVCam for 15 years with over 100,000 images over that time. Steve described his setup then went into how to configure the tones at the beginning of an SSTV transmission using MMSSTV.
Steve took the audience through a demonstration of how to setup and run the tones using MMSTV.
Justin VK7TW then went into a fascinating obituary that appeared in the Hobart Mercury.
We then looked at a manual switch hack for a 100W HF RF amplifier, reusing a matrix switch circuit by tracing the circuit and realising how the switch worked and the outputs and then designing a little circuit to convert the output to the types of output Justin needed. The updated switches now switch the Band Pass / LOW Pass filters for the amplifier.
We then did a quick review of latest Low-Key magazine of the VK QRP Club of Australia.
Justin then showed the RIDEN RD6018 - 60 volt 18 Amp fully configurable power supply and the battery charging and data logging settings using a 18650 LiPo battery.
We finished with reminders of future events.
This coming Wednesday night we will be looking at some more functions on the RIDEN SMPSU, reviews of the latest DUBUS and AR Magazines and much more along with some great visitors who are coming along to the clubrooms.
We will be streaming the nights on the REAST YouTube channel.
https://www.reast.asn.au/news-events/live-stream/
https://www.reast.asn.au/special-interest-groups/amateur-tv/
We go out on RF on 445.5MHz DVB-T 7MHz Standard Definition. So, if you have a TV, Set-top box or USB DTV Dongle that you can tune and scan 445.5MHz and you can see the Queens Domain, then you have a good chance of receiving the DATV Experimenter's Night Signal. Look out for VK7OTC. We also stream the nights on the REAST YouTube channel.
